The charcoal and blue colors really look cool on the Core Grafix. Overall the best looking of the 3. Despite being from the United States I have collected the Japanese versions of minis. I just always had a fascination with the Japanese versions of consoles and games. So I went with the PC-Engine mini. I was amazed how much the controller was like the controllers we had back in the day. I was a teenager and an avid gamer and these controllers were built to last. They don’t break in months like the game pads we have now. I love just about everything about these NEC minis. Konami being behind it made a world of difference. How I loved everything Konami back in that era.
I bought the TG-16 version because I mistakenly assumed that the games would be the same. The form factor issue is definitely something to consider. I do like how the TG-16 helps protect the ports for the HDMI and USB micro from rough usage. I agree with the blue on charcoal coloring looking slick. Now I just have to hold out until these are modable so I can hopefully play Snatcher.
Ordered my Coregrafx a few days ago and already got the alert it's been shipped. I'm super excited! I've been a PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16, TurboDuo and Supergrafx fan since their original release. I had all of the systems at one point. The only original I still have is the regular TurboGrafx-16 with the CD ROM and case. Looking forward to some glorious turbo action! Great video!
Objectively speaking, yes, the Core Grafx is the best out of the three. For me though, I have nostalgia for the original PC Engine, and I am willing to pay extra for the turbo controller.
The portability of the PC or Coregrafx is awesome. A whole system with 60 games that fits in your pocket. The only issue is whether it has Turbo on the controllers
I'm pretty sure that's because the Core Grafx has been a descent success nearby the gamers community in "official grey import", especially in France with the compagny Sodipeng (from Yves Guillemot !) between '89 and '93 (Systems were modified directly in HK for PAL region with NEC approval). I'm not sure but It seems the official Turbografx PAL by NEC Corporation (compatible with US turbochips) hits Spain and UK in low quantities or stay sleeping in deposits around '92. Anybody had not really a chance to buy this one.
I imagine they chose the Core Grafx for the EU due to that being the most common one sold here. The official release never sold anywhere near as many as the grey imports.
I'm hoping there may be a way to add additional memory by physically modding the TurboGrafx 16 mini. With the extra room inside the console you could easily hide a small drive inside of it. Thanks for the video.
HDD? the motherboard has a UART data point to bridge to to inject a hacked firmware to allow for more games to be loaded from a USB OTG adaptor, the hardware has no AHCI tech built onto the mainboard, so no ATA/SATA compatibility.
So these mini system internals are the same? Are there any performance differences? I heard Lords Of Thunder there was lag. Is that the case on all of these?
In the Core Grafx Mini review video, you mentioned that the Turbo Grafx Mini does not have the two extra games, but it does include both Force Gear and Twin Bee. Also has all the same variants too. But I don't read or speak japanese and had no problem playing both games as they are both shooters. So all three different mini systems do include all the same games. Maybe I'm repeating someone else's comment, I'm not sure. But whatev.
I don't get why the Core Grafx was released for Europe, when the only "official" release we had was the US Turbografx style, which was limited stock dumped in a Telegames warehouse. But NEC really messed up the European launch, even posting ads in magazines telling people not to import modded Japanese ones and wait for the official release. Also, Konami were mad not to translate Snatcher for it. would have been a major selling point.
France, Italy, Belgium were originally PC Engine/Core Grafx territories surfing the awesomeness of the French SCART invention. The UK and their neighbours (NL, Germany, Ireland) got the crap black box with RF-out back in the day.

From what I’ve seen the Core Grafx seems better just because of the games and the controllers have turbo buttons oh the Turbo 16 has those too just noticed. I dunno, I’m thinking the Core...what do u reckon???
The controls for Daimakaimura on the TG16 Mini are broken. Seems to be an universal issue with the emulation that doesn’t properly resister the left and right D-Pad Movements. Any info on this issue? Tnx.
when it comes to the size of all these 3 mini's it was designed with the intention of following the same dimensions as the originals. There are a few videos on you tube that people compare the original systems and we get the same results when both pc engine and the core graphics are sitting on top. I understand that the point is to go smaller but I'm extremely happy with the turbo graphics 16 mini!

Then you have pc engine with a controller with no turbo. And people say you don't need it because of shooters like gradius has it automatic. But I ask automatic at what speed. Then the European version which looks nice but it make sense because European game are different no Japanese art come which we a similar case with snes mini and snes mini European version. It's all about what you're nostalgic for, tempered by your willingness to set up an Amazon.co.jp account and import availability. The Core Grafx variant wasn't available, so I went with the PC Engine Mini because the TurboGrafx-16 is just too big. I'm not dissatisfied with the PCE Mini, but I do wish the controller had Turbo switches. Fortunately, the Hori Turbo Pad and Turbo Tap are coming out at the end of the month.
I have to agree with this verdict. The shell of the Turbo Grafx 16 is fun and it reminds me of the 90s. But it’s just too damn big and it’s all empty plastic, so it’s kind of silly. I picked up the CORE Grafx and I’m very happy with the simple size and the blue colors really pop. It’s the winner in my opinion. I really just wish that they would allow us to buy extra controllers by color. But it looks like only the white controller will be available for all regions.
Same here. I was originally going to get the T16 mini because I wanted the turbo controllers, but the size was a concern for me based on where I was going to place it. The Core Grafx looks like the best of both worlds.

I actually owned the original turbo graft 16. The thing is I never knew what the difference was between the pc engine and core grafx and/or why NEC even made two systems that I see as essentially the same. Could you explain?
In terms of internal specs they are more or less identical. Core grafx was released in Spain and parts of Europe. Additionally pc engine only had RF out where as core grafx had composite AV out.
I went for the Turbo Grafx-16 for nostalgia, however, that said..Currently *Only the PC-Engine* appears to have a Turbo Tap and Turbo Controllers available, under the same color scheme.
I have a PC Engine mini and a Turbografx mini... and the Turbografx is hard to swap out if you are using the same connections for different mini consoles.. that alone is a killer for me. I am constantly playing the Pc Engine mini, and am not doing much with the Turbografx mini as of yet. If I had to do it again, I’d probably get the Core Grafx... I think you are correct. It’s kinda cool for nostalgia reasons to have the Turbo though. Just not something I would use everyday.. probably will be hooked up to bedroom TV or something.
The cable management is a really good point I probably should have mentioned in the video. Its a pain to have to get those wires in console properly, and then taking them out in order to swap a console.
I'm torn between the Core Gafix and the Mega Drive Mini with the Tower of Power add on. Is the version of Ninja Gaiden on this thing any good, or is it like the SNES Trilogy?
@@Restalgia It arrived today, and with the exception of the stiff d-pad (though I'm sure that will get worn in eventually) I'm very happy with the way the Core Grafx turned out. Can't wait for Hakchi to come to it so I can max out what it can do.
The port cover is wrong on the CoreGrafx mini. It is supposed to wrap around to the bottom but the mini lacks the spring-loaded contacts that hold the original in place. If the entire point of the cover was to be a nod to the original design, well, it fails. Fun fact: The SuperGrafx port cover is identical to the CoreGrafx.
You can buy a controller with turbo separately for the PC Engine Mini. I bought one from Amazon Japan. It is unfortunate that it doesn't come with the console.
Hello im from Germany (im not perfect in english) . What do you think is the best material-quality from the 3 consoles ? Has the Turbografx16 heavier weight ? I preffer heavier weight and good production quality. The big size of Turbografx16 is acceptable for me.
The PC Engine never had PAL output. It lived by the flexibility of many Sony CRT SCART TV's in the late eighties able to deal with both 50 and 60Hz. But be warned, the HDMI output of the mini's is sub-par, yet the same on all mini's. If you see it side-to-side with a real 1987 PC Engine with a RGB-SCART cable on a 1080p Bravia from 2010 (afterwards they stopped with SCART inputs), the old TV wins by a huge margin.
I agree the Core Grafx is the best practical choice (rapid fire out of the box, Salamander, and PCEM hidden stuff). However, the Turbo Grafx 16 Mini has that cool/distinctive early 1990's aesthetic. Also, while the TurboGrafx 16 Mini is bigger than some may like it's the same scale to it's original as the PC Engine Mini is. To make the TG16M a different scale would be inconsistent and water down the brand. Then of course UA-camrs would complain it's a different scale. Aside from every game chosen (no Keith Courage, no SFII Champion Ed.), Konami did good with these. I'd like to see more hidden content such as; unlocking a PC Engine LT screen bezel, easy code enable for games with difficult cheats, M2 include their take on Mortal Kombat for the TG16, unlockable LD-Rom 2 games, and limited edition Core Grafx II (Euro), Shuttle (Japan), Super Grafx (Japan), Duo (USA) versions with different games.
The TG16 mini has the same PCB inside as the other two minis so they couldn’t just scale it down further without changing the PCB… and that definitely wouldn’t have been worth it.
@@emmettturner9452 I definitely love the size of the PC Engine Mini/Core Grafx Mini, even the TG-16 Mini. No complaints. I wonder if anyone has extracted the unique ROMs such as the near-arcade games for these systems yet?
@@kronosjapan I literally posted on the Hakchi Reddit group asking if that was possible 9 hours before you said that. :) They never released the tools to add your own games but I’m hoping they at least have the tools to extract them.
Amazon japan, they have them in stock. Link in description. you can cancel your existing one from Amazon UK or USA and reorder from japan an you will likely have it in a weeks time.
I think whichever version resonates with you is the best choice. For me, of course its the TG-16. It's not about being larger; it's what I remember from 30 years ago. That's why a lot of people preferred the SFC style of the SNES; literally 2/3 of the world got it and NA got the light gray and purple boxy slab. Honestly just grab whichever one you want. Don't forget that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
PC Engine never came out in 50Hz, all models were 60Hz, and TV's in Europe were capable of multi-format by the late eighties so a French Coregrafx could hook up to a Sony CRT over RGB at 60Hz! Any proper modern LCD/OLED TV will deal with 24/25/30/50/60p as desired, so expect no problems. Only be careful with TV's doing interpolation, turn that off.
Agreed. They should have done same version for all markets. I remember being ticked that the version in NA was huge. Most buying it would not notice and likely prefer the smaller version...... Did they have a warehouse full of real US version cases sitting for decades? Mostly kidding.
I grew up with the TurboGrafx 16 but went with CoreGrafx Mini anyway.... Same with the SuperNintendo mini....went with the Japanese version over the American.
i actually prefer the larger SIZE of the tirbografx 16. in.fact, watching ur other video of you choosing the pc engine over the tbgf16 due to its SIZE WAS one of the reasons i bought the tbgfx over the pc engine.
Yeah man, I wasnt bashing the TG16, it's just big. I do alot of work with these mini consoles so mobility and practicality are important. But you are winning regardless of what you buy
Loving my TurboGrafx 16 mini. Thanks Amazon Japan! Well built, lots of great games, controllers are great, the menu is the best of all the mini consoles,it's a winner. Can't wait for the hack. TurboGrafx 16 mini all the way, it just looks better.
Unless this virus shutdown stuff drags out till December that is not likely. Usually when you see a listing like that (December 31) the listing is just being used for placeholder reasons because a set release date isn't yet known to announce.
With nostalgia on my side I can say the Turbo Grafx 16 will be my favourite version Ha. This other ones don’t even have the giant and unnecessary removable back piece. I am excited to see just how big it is
Did You notice any difference in terms of Hz from the Japanese Pc-Engine and the European CoreGraphx one? back in the days, for the original consoles, there were 60 Hz of the Japanese (Ntsc) version and 50 Hz of the European (Pal) version and the difference was very evident on the screen in terms of speed and fluidity of the image...
There were no official PAL software ports during the Turbografx's limited French release, the console would've been 50hz through the 50hz TV RF modulator or via a 17.5% slower crystal oscillator to time the CPU, Im gonna say the former, so all the games will be 60hz.
I think they just kept the proportion of the original consoles. Maybe it was not the greatest idea for the tg-16. Nevertheless i can't wait to receive my tg-16 mini.
Forgot to say, order from Amazon Japan, it was easy. I got my TG-16 on launch day from toys r us back in the day. I skipped my college psyche class. Needless to say I didn't go to class the rest of the day. 😁 For you young bucks who've never played TG16 make sure to set time aside for the masterpiece that is Military Madness. Better yet, play with friends and get ready for some chess like battles. Enjoy this under appreciated gem.
Couldn't agree more on military madness! My Dad kept me up all night playing that game when I was a kid. He came in my room when we got done with dinner and played till 4am. Lol. The music and writing down passwords are etched in my mind! My fav system of all time. Oh and passing the controller back and forth. ( I only had 1 controller ).
@@kevinwells3864 haha, I couldn't thumb this up enough so I tore my thumbs off and shot them into the stratosphere. 😁 The music creates this tension between friends. Thank God we had lots of pizza and beer.
Wait, wait, just to be clear (maybe you said it, but I wasn’t entirely sure): are you saying that the TURBOGRAFX-16 does NOT have Force Gear or Twin Bee accessible through Salamander? Is that why you chose the CoreGrafx as the winner? Or am I misunderstanding you?
Can't agree on that. This is supposed to be "mini". The Turbo is huge and not exactly a nice design either. And that weird loose plastic part attached to the back just makes it seem very cheap.
@@oh-totoro that "weird" loose plastic part is part of the original hardware design to cover up the expansion port... its funny reading comments like yours LMAO....
I ordered the TurboGrafx 16 because I had never heard of the other 2 systems before until these mini consoles were announced. I also like the TurboGrafx controller better then the other 2 because it has Turbo Pad written on it and the color scheme. The TurboGrafx 16 just has so much nostalgia for me to pick any of the other two for the reasons you mentioned. The one thing I don't still understand is why didn't konami include the original Bonks Adventure in the library of games! That makes absolutely no sense to me.😒
i really wish i could get one, but for some reason every time i try to order a turbo grafx/pc engine mini my card account gets locked down and im unable to make a purchase from amazon's site. also right now there is a protest with the amazon workers going on so its probably a good thing that i didn't buy from amazon. can't support a company if they aren't protecting their employees
I just purchased one of these just for salamander so hope it's on mine, i have salamander on almost every console as its my favourite game and I'm good at it 😉
I suspect the CORE is the one for me here. I like the design and size of the physical console and controllers the best here, and I am from the UK so it being a proper English system is the best setup for me too. It's the one I have ordered anyway so all is good. Now I'm just waiting for the thing to frikin' arrive....

I would pick the PC Engine over the big and fugly TurboGrafx-16 any day of the week. I would, however, pick the Core Grafx over both of them: It looks the best of the three imo and is small like the Engine, the controller is the nicest and comes with the rapid fire, the game selection is complete, etc. It's just the best all round of the three.

Great reviews and you develop your points! Thanks you
Thanks Franky, I appreciate you supporting the channel
Do the games run at the same speed as the TG-16 Mini given the Core Grafx Mini is a PAL system where the games ran at 50hz vs US 60hz?
I have my Core Grafx for a week now. Love it.
The Core Grafx comes with an audio CD which seems to be Amazon JPN exclusive. It has only 4 tracks though.
I think that's only for pre orders.
is the Cor Graphix an European version in pal and weird Euro voltage?
Or is it NTSC with "normal" voltage like the Japanese and American systems?
They all run off USB power.
@@mrjameshendry This doesn't answer the voltage question.
USB will take any countries voltage between 100-240v and convert it to about 5v. You will be fine.
Just curious. What is the size of the Core Grafx Mini in comparison to, let's say, the Genesis Mini?
Much closer in size. It's very close in size to the snes classic
@@Restalgia Which will fit my entertainment area perfectly. Thanks for the info! Looks like I made the right choice getting this over the T16 or PCE
I think you did :)
@@Restalgia It arrived today, and with the exception of the stiff d-pad (though I'm sure that will get worn in eventually) I'm very happy with the way the Core Grafx turned out. Can't wait for Hakchi to come to it so I can max out what it can do.
Got mine in the mail today. I'm very happy with it. Now where can I get a 2nd controller?
The port cover is wrong on the CoreGrafx mini. It is supposed to wrap around to the bottom but the mini lacks the spring-loaded contacts that hold the original in place. If the entire point of the cover was to be a nod to the original design, well, it fails. Fun fact: The SuperGrafx port cover is identical to the CoreGrafx.
A solid compromise. I'm still picking up the TurboGrafx-16 to match with my other NA region minis.
Can this console support old hucard? Or must buy the new hucard?
You can buy a controller with turbo separately for the PC Engine Mini. I bought one from Amazon Japan. It is unfortunate that it doesn't come with the console.
Hello im from Germany (im not perfect in english) . What do you think is the best material-quality from the 3 consoles ? Has the Turbografx16 heavier weight ? I preffer heavier weight and good production quality. The big size of Turbografx16 is acceptable for me.
Happy that I live in Germany and ordered this one (in France, since none of the versions is coming to Germany).
Also, did you notice there's not a single Western developed game on any of the machines?
On the minis, perhaps.
Turrican was released for the PCE, so l guess it counts 🙂
I've preordered a Core Grafx from Amazon France but it got delayed. I hope that I will get it soon.
They are in stock on Amazon Japan.
@@glenn1979 I know, but within the EU I don't have to pay shipping or customs.
Question: If I buy the CoreGrafx verstion- how will the games look on my American TV? Wouldn't the games all be PAL format?
@@emmettturner9452 Wow. I would have thought SOMEONE would have extracted teh ROMz at this point.
How did you get this? I ordered mine months and months ago and it just says delayed, no confirmed delivery date
Amazon japan, they have them in stock. Link in description. you can cancel your existing one from Amazon UK or USA and reorder from japan an you will likely have it in a weeks time.
AWESOME review as always 🥰 Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Truer words have never been spoken 😁
Are the controllers exchangeable?
Yes
Do all three versions have proper 60hz or are any broken 50hz PAL versions
My Core Grafx comes tom (uk) so glad I waited now. 😎
How is it?
HI i just wondered if you had to pay taxes when it was delivered , thanks
Why would they hide games behind the salamander game ?
100% agree. The Core is absolutely my preferred version.
i actually prefer the larger SIZE of the tirbografx 16. in.fact, watching ur other video of you choosing the pc engine over the tbgf16 due to its SIZE WAS one of the reasons i bought the tbgfx over the pc engine.
Yeah man, I wasnt bashing the TG16, it's just big. I do alot of work with these mini consoles so mobility and practicality are important. But you are winning regardless of what you buy
Me too !!. I love the size of the turbo mini. It's perfect ❤️
does it have order of the griffen?
No not pre-installed
@@Restalgia the only reason I ever owned the turbo graphix 16 was for d&d order
Loving my TurboGrafx 16 mini. Thanks Amazon Japan! Well built, lots of great games, controllers are great, the menu is the best of all the mini consoles,it's a winner. Can't wait for the hack. TurboGrafx 16 mini all the way, it just looks better.
Glad you enjoy it!
What game is that song from I’ve had it stuck in my head for a week now!!!
Do you mean the one in the background? I always leave music credits in the description.
Yeah man thanks you vids are the shit son!!!
I don't think that you have mentioned that these consoles will not be released until December in the U.S.
You can buy them right now and have them shipped by amazon Japan. Links in the description, thats how I got mine.
i want the core grafx, however amazon says it wont deliever to Australia, not sure where to order one from
Try Amazon UK. link also in description
I am excited to see just how big it is
You will not be disappointed
Did You notice any difference in terms of Hz from the Japanese Pc-Engine and the European CoreGraphx one? back in the days, for the original consoles, there were 60 Hz of the Japanese (Ntsc) version and 50 Hz of the European (Pal) version and the difference was very evident on the screen in terms of speed and fluidity of the image...
Honest I haven't really notice it. I believe all the consoles are running at 60hz though. I have not verified this though
There were no official PAL software ports during the Turbografx's limited French release, the console would've been 50hz through the 50hz TV RF modulator or via a 17.5% slower crystal oscillator to time the CPU, Im gonna say the former, so all the games will be 60hz.
I agree totaly, think i will go with the Core Grafix if i can get my hands on one.
Links in description. You can order from amazon japan.
it says it wont deliever to Australua whyyyyyyyy?
oh no way, had no idea. I figured they would ship anywhere.
@@brianyounes9719 Wait until it releases in Australia
I think they just kept the proportion of the original consoles. Maybe it was not the greatest idea for the tg-16. Nevertheless i can't wait to receive my tg-16 mini.
I never owned a pc engine or a turbografx, so are those consoles like the sega genesis and megadrive? or am I missing something???🤔
It was a competing product to the nes, snes and sega. Didnt take off quite the same but has a solid fan base
@@Restalgia yes, but are those the same consoles in different regions? 🤔
@@Deathtank75 yes, TG16 was NA and EU, pc engine was JP and core grafx was also EU and Spain
@@Restalgia thanks that explains everything. 😁👍
@@Restalgia I am italian, and in Europe it was generally called "PC Engine" (rarely Core Grafx), not Turbografx.
I have both Turbo and Core and think their both awesome.
Forgot to say, order from Amazon Japan, it was easy. I got my TG-16 on launch day from toys r us back in the day. I skipped my college psyche class. Needless to say I didn't go to class the rest of the day. 😁
For you young bucks who've never played TG16 make sure to set time aside for the masterpiece that is Military Madness.
The music creates this tension between friends. Thank God we had lots of pizza and beer.
I would choice the chunky one, that is the sexiest from all of those minis.
I love that the Turbo is big, its freaking beautiful.
It is, dont get me wrong. I love it, just I prefer the smaller form factor.
As long as you take the back piece off the turbo graphics 16 it's fine that back piece is totally unnecessary anyway
Interesting review the white pc game is from Japan? How about the Core Graph? I like the Core graph remote control and yes like the core graph size
I just purchased one of these just for salamander so hope it's on mine, i have salamander on almost every console as its my favourite game and I'm good at it 😉
I purchased all 3 versions love them! Thanks to Amazon JP
Don't know how everyone is ordering them. Amazon said legal street date is 12/31/2020. $99.00 per order only.....
Amazon Japan has them in stock right now and shipping. Links in description
I would love to buy Coregraphx but it isn't sold in my country!!! Argh!!
You can order from Amazon japan, they ship to other countries. Links in description
@@Restalgia Just realized that it WILL release in my country, but only after this 'situation'. I feel so stupid. Should've done my research better...
Thanks man. Cool review.
Thanks for watching man, I appreciate the support
I suspect the CORE is the one for me here. I like the design and size of the physical console and controllers the best here, and I am from the UK so it being a proper English system is the best setup for me too. It's the one I have ordered anyway so all is good. Now I'm just waiting for the thing to frikin' arrive....
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought this is a MVG video.
I'd actually be interested in picking up the CoreGrafx but you know... beervirus and Raspberries and MegaDrive Minis...
Oh speaking of the MegaDrive, how do those PCE controllers behave if you want to play PCE games on there? :O
I actually have not tested the controllers on anything other then a windows pc but the work great there.
Lol I thought it was, love mvg
Yeah I clicked because I thought it was MVG
Core grafx version looks the best overall with content and console form, imo :-)
Hi, love your review, I own the ps3 slim, the ps4 slim, the xbox360 slim, the retro-bit slim, and the NES classic , with 200 games , with TurboGrafx 16 games... you must know the retro-bit, that you can play arcade games and genesis games , and so many .. that comes with 95 games and a sd card that can be insert in the back.. anyway .. Im a 62 y/o gamer.. lol.. I am going to wait, as I have 2 HDMI switch's .. link together .. to form 6 HDMI out puts . I am going to wait.. to something different .. its a great system.. if it was cheaper like 70.00 but again, i have most of those games, but I will say , the retro-bit is better.. at 69.99 with two controllers.. an 95 games at the gate.. and can add more threw the sd card slot.. check it out .. you can have your cake and eat it too as they say ..
I agree 100%. You can't write off the PC Engine because it had 2 japanese language games, the PC Engine mini was designed for the japanese market.
I'm still a bit confused on the differences of the Core Grafix and the PC Engine. The controllers and look were different. Anything else?
The game line up. PC engine has a few different games that are heavily japanese, and core grafx and TG16 have salamander
@@Restalgia Ah, okay. Thank you.
The biggest difference is the lack of turbo buttons on the included PC Engine controller. Many games would suck without those turbos!
i got the base pc engine version for how interesting it looks, I have never played this console but the anime "High score girl" made me want it
