Same, I always thought it was like 5 people. This man makes most other guitarists look boring. His mastery of looper pedals + like every amazing guitar technique imaginable packed in one song.
It's about having to hurt someone innocent to save yourself. An old lover, friend, even a stranger. Afterwards you give yourself a moment to reflect, hard, about what you were forced to do to survive -- your only moment of swerving. Then it's back onto the cold night road.
In the album's context I feel like it has something to do with your own departure or even the departure of someone you love. The latter is heavily implied up until you learn that the whole album was dedicated in the memory of the bassist's mother. It's extremely curious because the first few times I listened to ETE's self-titled it gave off that impression of sort of, losing someone or leaving your old life behind. And there's no lyrics at all, just the musical sensation. The fact that the music alone was able to convey exactly what the musicians were feeling at the time, is mind blowing to me.
Traveling through the dark I found a deer dead on the edge of the Wilson River road. It is usually best to roll them into the canyon: that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead. By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing; she had stiffened already, almost cold. I dragged her off; she was large in the belly. My fingers touching her side brought me the reason- her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting, alive, still, never to be born. Beside that mountain road I hesitated. The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights; under the hood purred the steady engine. I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red; around our group I could hear the wilderness listen. I thought hard for us all-my only swerving-, then pushed her over the edge into the river. -William E. Stafford
Duuuude! I've been listening to this song for forever and I thought it was like an electronic music producer or something. I had no idea it was dudes with real, legit talent. Oh my god I love this so much more now.
***** True. Let me rephrase. Skills on actual instruments. Let's be honest, it's easier to get good at producing electronic music than it is to get good at guitar, drums, etc. I do both, so I feel like I have a just little room to talk. I still have major respect for electronic producers, but there's something about seeing people playing their actual instruments that producers just can't match. At least in my opinion.
FelixRosas10 they play actual instruments they are real musicians. they are not some phony skrillex wannabees. anyone can use a computer to make music but it takes a lot more to play real music
+Josh Mehrtens He actually is not a fan of playing the guitar beleive it or not he considers himself a bass player. On their newest album he actually does not play any guitar, only fretless and six string bass. I always thought it was amazing how he pushes the limits of the bass and what it can do
@Trevor Browning I know this is a year old, but have you heard of Armistead Burwell Smith? He writes music on the bass guitar too, is similar to his style, at least in the way of playing chords and junk on bass guitar.
I've seen a lot of El Ten Eleven's videos on here, but this one is by far the best looking. Really fantastic lighting and camera work. And these guys are just the freaking greatest.
I first saw him do duran duran bass. My friend just sent me this. It all circles back. His robot is on point! If you have watched the duran duran you get it
Incredible. I love that through today's mass of unoriginal and auto tuned(because of lack of talent) music that there are musicians like this out there who are truly artists.
Nice. Love the old school Carvin as well. They made some criminally underrated/overlooked guitars for ridiculously low prices back in the day. Not sure why they never caught on.

learning it now, pretty sure its in EABG#BD# if ur super good you can use the bottom three strings for the bass parts and top three for the guitar. the use of an open tuning makes it easier than it seems, but still hard as hell and you need to be good at two hand tapping and it relies a lot on a good body clock
It is weird to have a favorite Poet no sir no it is not you no longer have to hide your face in shame you have my approbation I laud your steadfast courage for admitting this clandestine information
LOST CHATROULETTE CONNECTION. You look like Johnny Depp (eh, a little) I look like the Linus tech guy (sort of). We started listening to this song together...idk what happened :( Mom = successfully got mental help, resolved issues, dad= computer genius (hardware side), evolve language = evolve our species, relative moralism, SONDER!!! Buddy....ugh, ruined my night losin ya :( Find me man. Let's yell about the Universe together again please
I loved this song before but for some reason after finding out its only two people making all that sound I'm madly in love with this band.
Welcome to the club!!
Same, I always thought it was like 5 people. This man makes most other guitarists look boring. His mastery of looper pedals + like every amazing guitar technique imaginable packed in one song.
See them live if poss and be close enough to see his boards. Fogarty also loops.
This was my ultimate longboarding song in 2009 😢 memoriessss
Same! Crusing down Clearwater beach thinking it would last forever.
@@Akindal89same, but in Cardiff. Saw them mostly at the Music Box in San Diego. It still stands up! 👣
It’s crazy how such a gentle song is such a pain the ass to play live. It’s an incredible performance.
It's about having to hurt someone innocent to save yourself. An old lover, friend, even a stranger. Afterwards you give yourself a moment to reflect, hard, about what you were forced to do to survive -- your only moment of swerving. Then it's back onto the cold night road.

I will need this played at my funeral.
That would be a very unnerving song to play at your funeral.. look up the poem he referenced in the beginning.
I listen to this song when I'm walking sometimes. It makes me feel like the lead character in an epic indie movie/clever TV show.
A personal favorite, absolutely awesome band

Saw them live in KC a couple years ago - it was amazing to see and hear the process in person.
Duuuude! I've been listening to this song for forever and I thought it was like an electronic music producer or something. I had no idea it was dudes with real, legit talent. Oh my god I love this so much more now.
Same here! Amazing multitasking skills
Electronic music producers have "real legit talent" too man

Thanks for helping me discover Pinback :)
What a powerful statement to art and dedication/grit.
Whom ever you are, bless you for showing hope.
It’s so beautiful you mention that because that is exactly how I feel about this song and what it means to me ❤
Awesome 👌 all thought and more
Found them on Pandora. Glad I did. Been listening to this song for a while. Decided to check out the band. Pretty cool to see it live. :-)
Huge props to the audio engineer, the mix is brilliant.
I've seen a lot of El Ten Eleven's videos on here, but this one is by far the best looking. Really fantastic lighting and camera work. And these guys are just the freaking greatest.
Saw these guys live, it was great. If you get a chance, go find them.
It’s not weird to have a favorite poet. It’s actually really cool
No, it’s not.

Extremely talented guys. Thankful for this band.
Thank you to my buddy John Edwards for bringing this band to my attention. Amazing instrumentals, perfect for the wandering mind.

That bass tone. I love it.

So great
El Ten Eleven - amazing musicians maxing looping technology! Booked this bandfor The Jumping Turtle (San Marcos, CA) in 2005 and a fan for life!
so much talent between the two of them.
Nice. Love the old school Carvin as well. They made some criminally underrated/overlooked guitars for ridiculously low prices back in the day. Not sure why they never caught on.
Of course it's not weird to have a favorite poet. Love Stafford and he would love this song
Gets me in a good mood. I like that...

More technically talented than pretty much anyone I've ever seen in alternative rock.
Damn, SOLID performance!
Instrumental to my life.

Just bought this song. :-)
I was waiting for them to show the other guitarist...
Now that's talent.
God damn....
The music is it's own lyrics.

I thought hard for us all-my only swerving-,
then pushed her over the edge into the river.
this two musicians jam .
my only swerving is off the chain
I don't know if there is a god, but It doesn't matter. The things that humans feel, create, and share is meaningful enough to justify our existence.
"We're not worthy!" "We're not worthy!"...(as my hands move up and down like in Wayne's World)

This isn't off their newest album "Transitions" by the way
Dr Cox !!!
Anybody who disliked this song is jealous of their awesomeness. Js lol
i watched your video you guys are sick
Their style reminds me of c418 but with guitar. Or should I say it the other way around ?
No wonder I could not find a guitar tutorial for this

cool
👏
what tuning his this song???
Fuckin awesome!!
We were just taken to church.
the only problem with looping is that if you start to get annoyed with just one layer it kind of ruins the entire song :/
Dammit! my hands are too small to play the bass riff!
Gotta learn to stretch them muscles. I have small hands and I can chord the bass like this. Play through the pain and you get used to it.
