  • After Romelu Lukaku was given a second yellow card in Inter's matchup against Juventus at the weekend, in reaction to virulent racism from the Old Ladies fans, he celebrated in the same manner after scoring against Benfica in the UCL with no card given.
Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, Christina Unkel and Alessandro Del Piero discuss racism in football, in Italy and what (if any) solution there will be to fight it in the football world.

The irony to this is that people who questioned the effectiveness of the virtual signaling (the armbands, the kneeling) on the pitch were called racist - the common folk who use their hard earned money to purchase tickets - and even were deemed unfit to be in the stadium. Some English fans wanted these people who weren't going along with it in the crowd to be doxxed and to be banned. "There's a bunch of cameras in the stadium, so use them to identify the people who aren't with us." I paraphrase.

We've seen players go wild towards fans before, Cantona, Xhaka, etc. But you've seen Ronaldinho, Etoo, Balloteli, Evra, Vinicius, Saka, Rashford, Lukaku etc have to take it and suck it up because the response from society would be very different towards a black player expressing anger the same way.

I'm glad that we were talking about it, but you have to talk about it in a way that is supportive of the people who are being abused, and I think this segment shows that we need to educate each other and broadcasters on how to do that correctly. Otherwise we continue to model the behavior that we see, and there was a lot of positive here, but again, you cannot diminish somebody's experience and tell them that their experience is not real or that their experience isn't what they truly experience. Maybe have somebody who has these conversations all the time, like the diversity consultant come in and talk about these issues and discuss what has worked in their line of work. These are celebrities and broadcasters, they are not necessarily trained and how to facilitate these conversations, and yet we think that because they are beautiful or talented or anything else, that they would be able to guide us through something like this. We need the voices of people who do this for a living.
I think it's valuable to have the Italian perspective, but for him to say that it's getting better actually defeats the purpose of the conversation. Because what Thierry said is that it's still the same, and if you do not listen to the voices of the people who are affected by something, you are negating their experience. You cannot end this segment with somebody saying but it's getting better! There needs to be a statement from the broadcasting organization or the greater Fifa organization. I agree that there needs to be new ways of solving this, and I think that the Italian guys point is correct, that we need to fight this differently, because it's not working. But we cannot take his opinion of the situation over the people who have suffered this abuse. We need broader sweeping statements from the people who put on these shows, who organizes events, otherwise we pit one another against each other where we need unity. The people who need to be held accountable and who profit most never have to atone.
The broadcasting organization and the greater FIFA or Italian leagues need to be the ones who make these statements, and it seems like they are making their statements, just not in favor of the people who put their lives on the line to make the show.

those are not the same fans as the prem fans which is why the response they got when they came back was overwhelmingly different. when your comparing the top league the prem isn't just slightly better it's significantly better, all players report this.
it's far too frequent an occurance in Italy and spains top leagues to just ignore. the fact that some other places have some issues also is not an excuse. its literally every week in Italy to all the highest profile non white players. sort it the f out

    • @vkdeen7570

@Football-Pundit ur conflating two separate things. England's national team fans have a very specific dynamic with alcohol and compromise more of lower division fans.. even then it has improved a lot compared to the hooligan days.
that's not the same as the fans of the top division... nothing to do with the money. most fans are working class. it's to do with the culture the prem has built and how hard its worked to cut that nonsense out. it does happen but its not often and other fans in the stadium don't tolerate it.
Italy and spains top leagues have accepted it too long. the lukaku cases PROVES its institutional. there no way that ban would be upheld in the prem or accepted it just wouldn't happen. there severe cultural and institutional problems and they need to addressed. its embarrassing to have it happen week in week out.
I agree punishments need to be harder and taken more seriously. life long bans, fines, season tickets stripped ban every fab in an entire stand if u have to. fire all the racist cronies at the top as well. it's time to move forward atleast get on par with other top divisions
