As for that chopper replacement "controversy" I know it's none of our business, BUT, it makes perfect sense that as you go through the new milking parlor/herd expansion that it's time to have a second harvester either in the field chopping side by side, or at least have a cost effective unit (ie: used) waiting in the wings to cover for unexpected breakdowns. The whole operation is just too big to have everything come to a halt when the next breakdown occurs, and it will happen. This rings especially true in those super time sensitive grass cutting operations. I've seen far too many fields go from too dry silage to too wet hay because it wasn't chopped in time, only to lose the feed value because it wasn't dry enough to bale before the rain hit. All for want of parts not available on Saturday afternoon and the dealer is closed on Sunday. Highest quality feed has always been top priority in every successful farming operation I've ever participated in that involved feeding animals to make their money. Some people don't realize how important it is that when you're asking the girls to make next week's payroll, you gotta put the best feed possible in front of a her before she'll be able to put the most white money in the pail.

Andy there is always someone out there that thinks if it's not new it's junk. They don't think about it's paid for. It owes you nothing so it's cheaper to repair than replace. You put good information in your videos I enjoy them.

G’day Andy, I believe that no man should tell another man what to do with his money. I know out here in Australia if a man told another man what to do with his hard earned money he would be told in some untold words what to do or where to go. Thank you for your videos and thank you for your service. People don’t understand and don’t realise what farmers do.

Andy, I think all your decisions on those choppers makes perfect sense. I have often wondered watching your channel how you could take a machine that does the amount of work and covers the amount of acres that your chopper is and that the scope of your operation depend on only one. However coming from a man who's operation is much smaller than yours, but he was also still running a 1947 Farmall m tractor that my grandfather bought new that has had five rebuilds and six sets of rear tires I understand why you hang on to things. LOL we have newer stuff but that tractor still has its place. These armchair quarterbacks are obviously not the people that are writing the checks to keep your outfit going. Enough said

You are exactly correct in maintaining your existing equipment as you are still able to repair what you have vs John Deere dictating your 'right to repair' with the newer equipment. Also, some of your distractors don't have to fight for a fair price for the end product (milk)! Great videos again - keep them coming!

Well I’ll take the other side! I’m surprised you bought a spare chopper. Can’t imagine you have enough trucks to run both. The mechanical ability of yourself and team have proven you can fix most things fairly quickly and you keep a very close eye on developing issues. New doesn’t guarantee reliability…ask Chet Larson. The chopper is one of those pieces that when down idles a lot of truck drivers and silage packers and tractor drivers during haylage. No second guessing here, Andy! You the man! And I think the new parlor will be a hit, too!

Andy you and your family take really good care of your machines and you are able to do most mechanical repairs in your shop and for more difficult repairs you have good JD dealer support. The Cummins engine without emission control is a real advantage over the newer engines. Also you have many years experience operating this chopper and know the common wear components.

I spent about 40 years financing some of the most successful farmers in our area. I always had great respect for their judgment about spending on equipment. They typically had proactive maintenance of equipment. When you run a well maintained piece of equipment over a long time period you learn the things you to watch for and things to replace when appropriate and keep costs in line. 👍

but Andy, on farming simulator they don't do anything other than continuously buy new machines, so you can easily do that too!... LOL.
We run 4 choppers on our own farm and for custom chopping / ag service or whatever you guys call it and we never trade one in with less as 4500 cage hours. If maintenance is done on time and properly, they are just as reliable as a new chopper!
Good luck with the farm and the construction of the new barn and rotary parlor, and all the best to you, your family and the entire crew! Greetings from the Netherlands

I think that what some people don't really understand is that at some point it will become obvious to ANDY when it's time for a replacement. The engine will be blowing smoke, down on power, water pump seeping, radiator leaks, injection pump needs a rebuild, transmission getting weak, seals, gaskets and hose fittings will be leaking or seeping, high pressure hoses getting really old and hard, paint is shot, plastic/fiberglass panels cracked, rust holes in panels, interior falling apart, couple of glass panels have cracks, rubber weatherstrip splitting, air conditioning needs a new evaporator and compressor, tires are worn out, etc. Just like a car, even if properly maintained and repaired, AT SOME POINT too many things need repair or replacement to justify keeping it.

From another business owners perspective, Hourigan Family Dairy did not get where they are today by making bad decisions. Building a new state of the art parlor that could service them for 30 years or more, KEEPING this old chopper, running a 20 year old combine is no one else's right to criticize UNLESS you are their banker or equipment salesman. And still only the banker might have a comment, but I even doubt that. Stuff is bought and paid for a bunch of times over. Andy is involved in every aspect of this business, not driving around in $100,000 dollar pickup showing off and barking orders, staying clean. Keep doing what you do, no justification needed to me. Side note, that crane has eliminated the need for 2 employees.

Andy i farmed myself these people saying you need to replace chopper are nuts. Its a good machine. As far complaining about cost of new parlor they obviously got no idea where most of income comes from on a dairy farm. Cows milking is your main income of course thats where a dairy farmer puts money into the money makers. Most of these complainers also have no idea cost of farm equiptment now days. Not all farmers want to be buried in debt theyre entire lives. They dont realize most of the guys that do keep upgrading are leasing and never build equity in the equiptment. All those guys do is pay pay pay never own. Just like larson farms they lease combine for 4 seasons then its gone and start all over.

Some people have no idea how expensive a chopper is!! They can range from 750k to over a million dollars, what you guys spend YOUR money on is what y’all deem as a priority for the farm and clearly a new chopper is not needed at this time!! I grew up on a farm myself…equipment is a costly investment! As long as they are maintained properly they will last for years, your chopper is proof of that obviously. Some of you trolls need to find something better to do with your time instead of criticizing this hard working family of farmers smh 🤦‍♂️ keep up with the good content Andy!!

The definition of an expert is:
An ex is an ex-wife, a has been .
Pert: is a drip under pressure .
    Unfortunately they are everywhere.

Yeah because it's always easier to get a new machine than to buy parts and fix it🤦‍♂️😅😂🔥
