To be clear - I am NOT a lawyer. I did earn a law degree but did not pass the BAR. My intent was to approach this topic more from the researcher side than the legal side. Though I can see how one can be seen to bleed into the other.
Is there anyway you can attempt to try again to pass? I think you'd be a good lawyer. I could totally see you as a lawyer . My grades were not good in school but was always interested in Law. It's obviously a profession that takes a lot of knowledge and I can only imagine the costs of going to law school. With the current state of our judicial system, we need solid lawyers. It seems like every aspect of our society and it's infrastructure is crumbling. I sincerely am worried about the future of society for us and the younger generations. I don't know if I want to grow old in this world lol. Your videos are a great escape my man. Been binge watching your stuff the last week or so after not having internet for over a year. Been a fan for long time. Admire you man cheers
Love the channel Brock, you’re one of the good ones on this platform. I’m 27 and a lifelong nascar fan but with the amount of research you do and history you bring up I’ve learned more from you than I have from Larry Mac!
Just finished the video last night. The James Somerton examples in particular really were stunning. I couldn't believe not only how blatant his plagiarism was, but how extensively it infiltrated his entire channel. No doubt an important subject to be brought to light.
Brock, Nascarman has been plagiarizing your voice for YEARS now, you gotta put a stop to it! In all seriousness, with the advancements in AI voice synthesis, I wonder how long until it becomes common practice to straight up steal someone's voice for video content?
Haha! You raise a good point - in fact, we might actually be in that era now. My parents were watching a video they thought was narrated by Anthony Hopkins but turned out to be A.I. At least for now it still doesn't sound right.
That'll work until the channel[s] get[s] outed. Synthetic voice work isn't monetizable under the UA-cam Partner Program's Terms of Service, and hasn't been since 2019. (This was done to stop the site from being swamped with Reddit Text-To-Speech videos and other low-quality content, especially after the UA-cam Automation Scam became widespread.)
One big thing AI synthesis can't get right is accents- I spent a few days setting up an AI Dale Earnhardt post-race interview where he was talking like an iRacing zoomer- the weirdest part was I had to write typos to try and fake a southern drawl. It sounded like him but it couldn't do his accent.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this Brock. It's wild how easily you can see the difference in quality (both in how it's presented and how follow up questions are answered) from people who actually take the time and gets hands on with the research and those that just skim it or take it from someone. I cover NASCAR for my own job but from a fantasy sports and betting angle and it's shocking to me how little time is put into it or how much false information gets put out there due to people not putting any amount of time into it. I'm not even talking about major things, but situations that could be fixed by simply going back and watching the race or watching a part of the race. The part you brought up about someone saying "just use the jayski articles" is a great example of this. While yes, using articles can get you to a starting point, there is so much more beyond that. And God forbid something in that article is incorrect and you didn't go beyond that first skim, you end up looking like an idiot to those that actually go beyond that first step.
HBomber and Todd In The Shadows doing it with different kinds of coverage is very, very kind. There will always be people willing to put a spin on content like yours (lord knows I have with my own scrapped episodes on DEI's Cup Series ventures), but doing no research into a topic eventually ends up in the internet version of "telephone", where one fact becomes a completely new thing. I hated the bibliography stuff at first, but it ends up giving credit to those with the information. Why? Because if you don't like how I or you may have covered it, the annotations gives the viewers a chance to look into it themselves. It's how I originally found the works of those like Ed Bouchette for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
I don’t spend near as much time on YT as I used to, but I’ve been getting suggested videos from random channels “investigating” Dale Earnhardt for example. Clearly it’s becoming a “clickbait” culture on YT. I’m glad these things are being addressed.
And important topic that seems to have taken the Creator Community by storm. Thanks for wading in Brock, as a creator you have a say and it was well said indeed
Had no idea what this video would be about. Defunctland is amazing lol. Currently sophomore with industrial engineering major and writing my first actual research paper. I decided to do it on analyzing briscoes 8.45s pit stop in Kansas. Unfortunately doing research hasn’t been super easy. I’ve had to dig to find any citeable sources and have ended up writing alot more than researching. If you have any advice to improve actually finding the real sources even google scholar is so awful
Wasn't expecting this topic to reach this portion of UA-cam, but at the same time I'm glad it has because there are times when I've had to double take some videos just to make sure some folks weren't just Copy and pasting what someone else did on certain games or drivers. I am of the impression while there are some like the people in that video who just were in it more for the money and less for the creativity so did as little as possible outside the presentation in their work (with their voices even fully displaying their lack of enthusiasm or passion for the topics if you really listen to them), you also have this pressure felt by many thanks to this very restrictive algorhythm that if you don't post a video on this topic in this window of time or at this frequency that you won't go anywhere. I won't say that plagiarism hasn't always existed but with the way monetization and the algorhythm works, its become more obvious that a "Chase the numbers" Mentality has essentially created and in some ways it has kinda further encouraged this uptick in plagiarism. I think overall, this topic is hopefully going to make people far more vigilant and aware as well as abit more careful (as viewers or as content creators). I'm hoping that as I mentioned briefly, this also grabs more of UA-cam's attention too and at the very least makes have a long & hard look at how their systems to a degree might've been partially contributed to it. While I agree that people should just make what they are passionate about and not worry about those numbers, I also think the platform's actions also do quite abit in sending the message as to how people's videos should be done as well.
Hey Brock, love your stuff & narration. I'm wondering how much of the 'Rise of the Field Fillers' series will be poached? I really enjoy hearing those names I thought I'd forgotten, but I guess I hadn't after all. Boys, Gunselman, Mader III to name a few. There are some sorry fokkers out there who will kleptorize anything just for some Likes, I guess. I've never doubted your integrity Brock - and to this point all your video ideas are original -or- new takes on old themes. I was especially pleased to hear that reporters and photographers are delighted to be in your bibliography and that you used their work.
@@LASTCARonBROCKdoubt UA-cam will bring back the response video feature, it was pretty useful back in the day. Seeing as we're both old school creators.
Unfortunately I am not a NASCAR fan because I really enjoyed your discussion of this topic and would love to see your coverage of other topics. Hopefully any future non-racing videos you do get put in my recommended list like this one did. (I just reread my comment and hope it didn't come across as a backhanded insult because it wasn't. That is why I teach science instead of English...😊)
Did you know AdBlockers violate You Tube's Terms of service? If they worried as much about plagiarism instead of milking the last 1/30 of a cent out of advertisers.. Well?

None taken - I certainly understand racing's not everyone's interest. If I do more off-topic things like this I may dedicate another channel to them.
