4 guys I worked with in Orlando had similar years F-250's and F-350's stolen out of the parking lot at Orlando Airport over a span of 2 years. 2 were recovered and 2 were not. This was around the same time frame that Mr. Harmon's equipment was stolen. Orlando PD and FHP both stated that those trucks with 7.3 liter diesel engines were highly sought after by thieves that had them shipped to South America where they were highly desired down there for whatever reason. The thieves that stole Mr Harmon's truck got a huge bonus when they scored the trailer with the Xfinity car and all the equipment that came with it. Their primary target was the truck.
Unfortunately the car has probably been parted out at this point. Lots of teams at loads of local short tracks wouldve gobbled up a chance at some parts from a guy who’s “just getting out of it, too expensive”. Just my opinion honestly
Interesting story! Thanks for the content Brock! Wishing Mike Harmon all the best in his pursuit of justice, finding out what happened to his assets, and hopefully the recovery of the truck, trailer, and race car.
Mike is a good guy, I remember when this went down. Had a similar thing go down with my dad's car. Police didn't help, but we also set a trap and, well, we caught them and got the car back. It's sad that there is so much crime that Law Enforcement catalogs it but that's about it.
Sadly this is not a unique story. If nobody was physically hurt during a theft, they won't make it a priority. Lack of staffing, lack of training, and a general opinion that property thefts aren't easy to solve means local cops will do the minimum to help
Hell we had property broken into and stuff taken, reported and found the perp. Turns out he was an informant for a county over and they wouldn't touch him. Fuckin ridiculous.
Mike Harmon is a legend, hate this happened to him, I just wish they could have better luck making the races 2022 & 23 where tough so many times where they showed speed but would have a mechanical issue or weather in qualifying would keep them from ever making list of the races hopefully their luck can turn around in 24
The most horrific wreck ever.. a stolen hauler... a lone Dodge Challenger in the 2015 Xfinity Series season... Harmon had a real roller-coaster of a ride.
I've always kind of liked MHR as an underdog team. They always were kind of mid-packers but gave drivers who were unproven the chance and usually they out performed and ran in the top 20.
Maybe 3 years ago ( Florida? ) race car haulers where being stolen for the truck and trailer but the contents were burred as they were too much overhead to sell.
Police Departments can't just ping phones in the area. There has to be either a search warrant or exigent circumstances (where lives are on the line) for a ping to be done, even then you have to have a specific phone number to ping. Just because the police had items that belonged to the thieves doesn't mean that fingerprints are on them. Fingerprints are delicate and are easily contaminated. I hate that this happened and that nothing has turned up since.
Look into the Stalnaker cars out of Florida. A thief stole the trailer, and proceeded to dig a massive hole with a backhoe or something and then buried the cars and all the other equipment to hide them. They were found not long after, but everything was essentially destroyed. The cars were crushed and barely recognizable aside from the dayglo type lettering on them. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to Harmon's stuff, although it could also have been parted out as well.
UNOH is not UNO. Its pronounced U-N-O-H, just say the letters. Also, the 2 haulers were not gray, one is black. I never heard of the story about the recreating of the theft. Interesting they didn't chase the person(s) after that, or just go back and recreate it again. But its also kinda sad the local police dept has no interest in trying to be of help.
Thank you for the corrections - I hope those weren't too distracting. From what I heard in Mike's story, it sounded like they tried to catch the person during the sting, but he got away too quickly in his own truck. Also didn't help that the other people he had staged there had fallen asleep. Mike had stayed in touch with local authorities around that time, but they simply stopped returning his calls.
.....you mean to tell me that the dudes he had at the stake out, fell asleep?.....something isn't cool....and the other guy who had his shit stolen, but got it back?.....and the locals don't know nothing?.....hummmmm.....sounds like he was targeted.....auto racing is tough, especially at that level.....you have to love the sport and the family structures made.....but falling asleep?.....come on man
That weekend was bad. And the very next weekend at Dover I suffered a mini stroke on pit road while in the 74 pit stall that I needed medical attention at the track.
@@LASTCARonBROCK I was fine after 4 hours in the infield care center. They gave medication in my IV. I rode back to the hotel with Bayley. It was a mini stroke not a full blown one. I was able to help out the team for race 2 the next day.
I don't think Mike Harmon or Carl Long are going to be around for much longer as car owners. The rising cost of competition has already squeezed Jimmy Means and Morgan Shepherd out of the Xfinity Series; Carl and Mike are sadly not far behind.
Morgan scaled back because of the lack of qualifying for two years. Now with the Parkinsons, he's probably focusing on his health. Jimmy Means was supposed to make some attempts in 2023, but never showed. Letting David Starr get away, who brought sponsorship was the beginning of the end for the 52
Even if they close down, they have made a legacy and have pushed for guys like Timmy Hill, Kyle Weatherman and Joey Gase so those guys keep running underdog underfunded teams of their own.
Us native Alabamians know how to improvise (when the police won't help). I just wish Mike could have got his hands on the thief who cranked his truck. This all reminds me of 1977 Harry Gant had raced his sportsman (Busch series) car at Huntsville. The next day they all went & qualified at Nashville. Teams haulers all parked outside motel, again just before daylight Harry hears his truck crank. It's gone with racecar on back, south down I-65 & by dark the empty hauler found off I-65 at Ardmore. Race car never found.
The fact that nothing has ever been said is a sign that these are extremely good professional criminals. Odds are, the truck and race car were parted out, and the trailer was either just scrapped or repainted and sold somewhere across the country.
The first 8 minutes was relevant to establish this theft occurred at a particularly bad time as the team was improving for the first time in years. As for the employees, I specifically mention they were cleared as suspects and fired.
@@LASTCARonBROCKI just feel like whoever did take the car was someone involved in the nascar world. Like a crew member or past crew member. Not that they physically stole it but no one else can get rid of a lot of this stuff except someone involved. That stuff was used at the very same tracks Harmon was at I think. It’s so frustrating. In my slow mind you can’t convince me there wasn’t races Harmon was at where that equipment was at the same facility.
The phone triangulation (ping) would have been finding a needle in a haystack. One, these investigations usually start with a specific device (SIM) and then a data search can be done to see which towers that device connected with. Two, a device can be connected to more than one tower at once. So now you’re sifting through data trying to find an unknown SIM that was within range of a tower at a given time, and towers can cover up to a 45 mile radius. And just because it was early in the morning doesn’t mean there will be fewer devices. All the devices of people that live in that area will still show as connected during that time. And, three, the big one. It’s pretty clear that these are professional criminals, so they likely had burner phones anyway.
And the guy sleeping in the trailer… who Mike was apparently willing to kill with his plan of pit maneuvering the rig on the interstate. This all sounds unbelievably dumb it has to be real.
Seems fishy to only drive from Daytona barely into Georgia with two guys in the truck and then to not park it at the hotel. The trip from Daytona to his shop is only 7 hours I understand that they can say they were tired but, there were two of them two switch out.
Probably somewhere in South America/Cuba/Central America/Mexico being used by a drug cartel. Cause even here in North Carolina, when a vehicle is stolen, the thief uses it for drug related crimes. Mainly drug trafficking. My local sheriff's department actually busted an entire crime ring doing that exact shit. About 5-10 people were arrested. And with this case happening close to the Georgia/Florida state line, it was most likely stolen by drug traffickers. Cause a LOT of the drugs that come from South America/Cuba, comes through Florida. As far as the car and equipment goes, the traffickers/thieves probably sold all that off somewhere via the dark web.
Can't believe you would send a $400,000 rig down the road without a GPS tracker hooked to the ECU of the truck, one in the trailer and one on the race car at all times. Also rule #1 is someone stays with the rig at all times while on the road, no exceptions, and that means someone sleeps inside while armed. After being the victim of a similar theft back in the 90s, I learned a hard lesson. Thieves will steal anything and everything they think has value with no remorse. Even now my rig is parked outside my house, two locks on the hitch reciever, wheel chocks in place and chained around two wheels, one side on jack stands with both wheels removed, and a GPS tracker hidden in the trailer as well as one on the truck. Overkill, yes. But if someone wants to take it now theyre gonna have to work REAL hard......more than 3 minutes.
