My character is a tiefling that has never met another tiefling. He hit level 3 and didn't know that he had this ability, so the DM and I agreed to randomize it's use for the first few times. The very first time it ever went off, the flames killed a party member who accidentally caused him damage. Dead-dead, not unconsious. It changed him from happy go lucky guy to a troubled, tragic character that was driven to atone for the the death he caused.
This spell compliments warlock quite well. A damaging reaction spell is very rare, and it allows warlock to become ahead on damage while still leaving your action free to Eldritch blast. It also works great with armor of agathys, where it deals a lot of damage to foes when you get hit. Quite great for bladelocks, but even warlocks that don't use pact of the blade can get mileage out of this spell.
I've once found myself in a situation where we were surrounded by a huge crowd of townspeople and some asshole assasin threw a dagger at me. Logically he could've thrown it at me only from the maximum range of 60 feet even with disadvantage, so he HAD to be in my range for hellish rebuke. I've simply told my GM that I'm pointing in the general direction of where the dagger flew from. Well, there goes your spot in a crowd if you suddenly turn into a human torch.
There was a time i couldn't hit a big bad, just terrible die rolls on my end. I combo'd this with Armor of agathys for a hefty chunk of damge to him while he only took some of my hit points away.
I sense the potential to do some hectic Todoroki levels of damage. So say you're running a very melee focused Warlock build (you know what. Just Hexblade again just for consistency's sake) and have enough of your 5th levels slots to do this. Armor Of Agathys at 5th level. So 25 temp HP and if you get hit with a melee, whatever hit you will get hit with an Automatic 25 points of Frost damage. Then with your reaction, Hellish Rebuke for a massive 6d10 fire damage on top of the 25 they're already taking. In other words, you're a hammer-detonated Thermal Shock bomb
I play a Tiefling with an item that allows me to cast Armor of Agathys at level 1, 2, or 3 depending on how many charges I use. I've done this and dealt more damage when it wasn't even my turn because they took 15 cold damage and 3d10 fire damage. It's a very good strategy

I'm playing a College of Valour Tiefling Bard with a frenzied melee battle style (gonna multiclass to Barbarian next level) and I REALLY love to flavor it as a flaming counterattack. Burning bite? Inferno headbutt? Or my favorite, the flaming nutshot (RIP that one troll). I usually only use it on a melee-able target, but I'll use it on farther ones in a dire situation.

Why does nobody talk about this spell. Yes you have to take damage but once you do you basically instakill whatever hit you. Especially at higher levels. “You are hit and take three damage” “ok I cast fuck you with a 5th level spell slot” they take 6d10 damage
I've killed an Orc archer with my Tiefling, and said in Infernal: "Go eff yourself!" Shame that he wasn't in melee range, I also had armor of agathys on me
"Shame that he wasn't in melee range, I also had armor of agathys on me." Lol same, that's literally why I choose Hex instead unless it's a melee build.
Dude, do you ever read the whole spell descriptions or just skim before making a video. Once again you have spent a lot of the video pushing a use case that is specifically forbidden in the spell. You are certainly causing arguments, dissapointment, and unbalance at tables. "Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take in response to being damaged by a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see" A CREATURE THAT YOU CAN SEE

Wow that's pretty hard hitting!
"only for warlocks!!"*
*Tieflings, as always, are the exception

I agree! I just love it sooo much ! Thematically it's one of my all time Favorite spells!

Haha What a comeback!

@@callmeemery8744 Haha What a great way to homebrew it!
This spell is basically “Fuck me? No, Fuck YOU!”
It's spell for warlocks and a reaction for tieflings if I remember right

Haha You're one heck of a Bard!
Tiefling storm sorcerer + tempest cleric with buffs to all lightning damage spells, reskinned this to be engulfed in lightning instead :)
Shield Hero build would love this. It's basically the self-burning curse.
Hahahah THIS IS TURNING INTO SUCH A LEGIT BUILD!!

I like it! Great use of flavor!
Pact of the Blade, Armor of Agathys, plus this Spell = Heavy Damage
They'll really regret hitting you, that's for sure!
I disintegrated a skeleton with this.
Haha very nice!

It's one of my favorite spells from a role play perspective!
Chance's D&D Spellbook playing as some vengeful god that only shows their power when hit

It's not just for warlocks sorcerers can use it to
If an ally is in contact with the enemy i'm using hellish rebuke on does he take damage too ?
Nope, not by RAW!
I am new to dnd, my question is how to determin the saving throw the enemy has to make?
It is a dexterity 20 saving throw
Do I need to roll a d20 to use this?
