Mr. CS Wilson : Much Appreciated your effort to educate with your smart tips for Steel Detailer, please make more videos about Default font & size that you mentioned. More info for Firm & Project folder is also appreciated. Great Job.
Thanks for the video and useful tips. For the mouse I use a Razer Naga with 12 extra keys available in the thumb, which I have mapped mainly for navigating and some of the most common shortcuts.
You're welcome! The Razer Naga looks to be very nice. I've seen those (and others like them) and considered trying one out at some point. Was it difficult to get used to?
Is like what you mention in your video, best to start just by setting up couple of the buttons and getting used to. But I like it more that other gaming mice where the buttons force you to use many fingers and here you can use all the extra buttons just with the thumb.
That sounds like good advice! :) I agree, some gaming mice are a little over-the-top when it comes to buttons. I guess it depends on what you need and what you get used to.
Hello, Wilson Longtime without posting videos about Tips and Tricks. I would like to request you if you have time to show us how to set up your model folder and firm folder it will be good, please.
Hi, great video, I was just wondering how do you get your linetype so thick on the drawings, It looks good the thick black lines. Also, you use a circle point mark to highlight points for dimensions, you seemed to get this so quickly, is this a setting, or do you manually draw a circle. Thanks
Thanks, Richard! See my reply to kamal halawi in this comment section for the line thicknesses. As for the work point circle, that's manually drawn. Thanks to magic of video editing, it seems to just appear out of nowhere. :)
Hey Wilson. since you said that you will certainly modify the brace length after setting a brace components, is there any practical way to set desired length, but keeping a handles on workpoints? i am obviously not thinking about changing offset lengths of start and end point, because it would be very difficult to set brace length that way. And if I turn on DM and type desired brace length, Tekla will move the handles.
The only way I know to do it ~accurately~ is to cut the ends with Fit Part End or Part Cut or even Polygon Cut. If you're using bolts, those will have to be moved as well (in case you missed it, I did actually fix that brace at the end of the video).
Could you perhaps share your keyboards macro key layout. I would like to optimist my layout and need some ideas I use a Logitec G19 that has 12 extra keys to the left with 3 modes. Currently it's just set up for working in drawings. Like next/previous drawing, save, print, delete, dim and such.
Thanks for writing wilson, how to find errors which are done while doing model in a easy way & guide us to give 100% quality model in your video that will be very much useful.
Your videos are with very good content and at the same time very entertaining :) I hope I will get some notification also, when/if you will do this video of firm folder and model template setup. It would be interesting to see, how you have built it up. Greetings from Estonia (near to Tekla HQ) :D
Thank you! I appreciate that. I'm still contemplating whether or not to do a video on the firm folder and model template setup. Tekla put out a pretty good tutorial on those a little while back ( ua-cam.com/video/M0XBetANsqo/v-deo.html ). I'm not sure I could improve upon it. Thanks for the comment and tell Tekla HQ I said "Hi" if you happen to stop by. :)
Thanks. Time to time I go there and then I can pass your greetings :) My question is more about what files are useful to have in template model and what in the firm folder and maybe it`s useful to create/start using a custom environment. At first I used more firm folder, but lately I started thinking that it`s better to have the template model in the firm folder and most of the files under template model. In this case, every project will start with some situation and there will not be any unexpected updates/changes during one project. And it`s useful to create a custom environment when local environment isn`t the best (luckily in the US they improve their environment quite nicely). What are your thoughts on this?
Hallo, love your episodes, with some videos from Tekla itself, best ones on the net. Creating Firm Folders is problematic, as there are a few videos, but not all exactly the same, so which one to use. Would appreciate if you have time (valuable in Engineering) to do a video showing from start to finish with all the in-between. See you in the next one.... :-)
Thank you! Firm folder can be a bit tricky depending on your workflow. I use a combination of model templates and a firm folder. I've added your request for a more detailed description about firm folders. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching!
Thanks for your question! The displayed line weight is controlled by a few different things. My settings are as follows: Advanced Options: XS_BASE_LINE_WIDTH=0.01 XS_BASE_LINE_WIDTH_AFFECTS_SCREEN=TRUE Next, make sure XS_USE_OLD_PLOT_DIALOG=FALSE and then select File -> Printing -> Print Drawings. Click on the Line Properties tab and change the line thicknesses for each associated color as desired. Remember, the value entered for the line thickness will be multiplied by the XS_BASE_LINE_WIDTH. So if XS_BASE_LINE_WIDTH=0.01, then a value of 35 will display as 3.5mm, 50 will be 5.0mm, etc. At this point, if you don't want to use the new plot dialog, set XS_USE_OLD_PLOT_DIALOG=TRUE. You can switch between the different color modes in the drawing editor by using Cycle Color Mode (usually Ctrl+B shortcut). Hope that helps!
Why did you turn off direct modification when making the final gusset plate node changes? I do a lot of chute work and plates are major part of the reason I use Tekla.
Thanks for the question. In short, you don't have to disable direct modification to do the procedure I showed, that was just my normal workflow. I normally model with direct modification turned off because I started using Tekla Structures before DM was available. I know that it has been updated and improved quite a bit since it's introduction, so I'll probably try to start using it more.
If you're referring to showing exact lines in the model, do this: Without Tekla running, go to the model folder of your project and open (or create) the file OPTIONS.INI and include the line XS_SOLID_USE_HIGHER_ACCURACY=TRUE. The next time you open that model, the profiles will be shown more accurately. If you're referring to showing exact lines on the drawings, I've covered this in a previous video found here --> ua-cam.com/video/CmiIizp0Ef0/v-deo.htmlm28s
Not sure about syncing with dropbox. For the text settings, open the text properties dialog in the drawing editor, adjust your settings to what you want and save to a name you want (ie SMALL, STANDARD, etc). Then copy that saved setting from the model folder to the firm folder as described in the video. Hope that helps!
I am currently doing this so I can work from home As CS Wilson said in the video about firm folders with the difference being the location should be in your Dropbox folder instead of under documents. (I set my dropbox to be directly under my C:\ you can change that under preferences > accounts > locations so the folder is in the same place regardless what the user name is.) I also put my Teklastructuresmodels folder in dropbox so I can work on the same model from the office or from home Setting up templates for using firm folders is a very good idea. personally I create individual shortcuts to launch tekla with the desired settings/firm folder. Down side you have to reopen tekla every time you want to open a model from a different client.
I installed tekla stucture 2018 but same error which i have in 2017i When i create single parts dwg the softwear stop working and showing error.,and automatically close. this is very big problem beacuse if i cnt make the dwg the softwear is useless. Sir wilson I am hopefull you can solve this problem.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with v2018. There are a few others I've seen on the Tekla Forum that have experienced crashes with the new version, but nothing has been resolved as of this moment. I would suggest you contact your local Tekla Help Desk to report the problem.

CS Wilson nice presentation. And huge thanks for your support. Q. HOW CAN WE ADD CONCRETE TOPPING ON METAL DECK USING FLOOR LAYOUT TOOL.
Hi! Nice video. With direct modification you could type the plate dimensions, the plate points would move according to the typed dimensions.
Thank you for making a Tekla video in Engrish. No, seriously, Thank you.
Thanks for the video and useful tips. For the mouse I use a Razer Naga with 12 extra keys available in the thumb, which I have mapped mainly for navigating and some of the most common shortcuts.

Have you produced a video on setting, templates, firm folder ... bla, bla etc. As you mentioned ?
There really wasn’t any requests for it, so it got put on hold.

Can you give some useful tricks for model checking
Thank you for watching!
What types of things are you looking the check in the model?

You're welcome!
Please make a video how to sync tekla settings on 2 different computers (with dropbox).
How to setup the text size for rest of my life? :)
can i use the same firm folder for different version of tekla on one computer?
Not sure about syncing with dropbox. For the text settings, open the text properties dialog in the drawing editor, adjust your settings to what you want and save to a name you want (ie SMALL, STANDARD, etc). Then copy that saved setting from the model folder to the firm folder as described in the video.

Yes, you can use the same firm folder across different versions of Tekla Structures. That's another benefit of the firm folder.
I am currently doing this so I can work from home
As CS Wilson said in the video about firm folders with the difference being the location should be in your Dropbox folder instead of under documents. (I set my dropbox to be directly under my C:\ you can change that under preferences > accounts > locations so the folder is in the same place regardless what the user name is.)
