      Ok. I'm in the planning phase of my boat project. Around me, there are mostly lakes that only allow electric motors. Before we go further, I'll explain what I'm dealing with. I was given a 16 ft bass boat by an old 1sg I served under in the Army. It's a 255 Sprint I believe. Well taken care of, but it needs A LOT of love to be at my standard. Now, getting back to my plan. Since most lakes are only really electric unless I venture a little further, which one day I probably will just to fire up the beast and cruise around. But for sake of my current situation, I only have 2 batteries in the boat. I just bought a 2 battery switch, and I figured I would run them in parallel. To maximize trolling. And by the off chance I fire up the big motor, I still have plenty of battery to troll afterwards. I do have a 2 bank battery charger on board. Does that sound sufficient? Or should I add one more battery? I also bought a nice fuse block to actually wire up individual circuits. For the fish finders, live well, radio (I'm adding), lights, and whatever else I feel squirrely about down the road. I feel like 2 is enough, but I'm not sure. How long can you troll around on 2 batteries? And is there a way I can wire in some sort of alert if I'm running too low on juice to get back to the dock? Thanks again.

      You can get a battery gauge.. but I would run one battery just for the boat stuff fish finder and engine then the other 2 for the electric trolling motor.. if you have your fish finder on the same battery as a trolling motor you will get interference on the screen whenever the trolling motor is running..

    • @charlesdiggs3500
      @charlesdiggs3500 3 роки тому

      That's exactly what I was planning. Now on a gauge... what voltage is leaning towards a spent battery? 10.5 ish?

      One more question... I've been doing tons and tons of research on the best trolling motor batteries. Strictly for trolling, and I can't decide. In your years of experience, what are 2 great batteries batteries you can count on to be good batteries? I'd like 31 series. But would 2 27 series be sufficient?

      So stupid question but just want to make sure. I don’t have troll set up yet but you talk about battery chargers/tenders. I can tell you are OCD as well. But those are mainly for when you park bot for periods of time you just plug in at home ? Or do you plug in after every use?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      Yes I do have OCD .. 😉 lol. To answer your question the battery tender type is to be plugged in after every use and you can leave it plugged in until you go out again.. the alternator charger works while on the water when you are running the main engine.. I used minn Kota for everything.. it is my personal preference.. let me know anytime if you have any questions.. thanks again

      I’m pretty decently mechanical inclined engines and such. Understand well on engine charging. Just getting more picky as I’m redoing my checkmate and never really used a charger for RV or Marine use so just wasn’t sure if it is best to plug in after every use. And thanks man. I really apprised it and being in FL I know many marine shops and I am great with hot rods and such but lack in electric cal use. This battery switch Deal is more confusing then should be and I suppose you just do better. Now I have seen how others are saying the newer Battery Isolating Blue Sea switch is now the better way to go??? Whats your take on that? Oh happy new year by the way Dude. Cheers 🍻

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      So the alternator will always charge the crank battery in a normal set up of course.. the alternator charger I’m talking about is made by Minn Kota and uses the excess charge and boosts it to the electric trolling motor batteries.. they will get a charge while on the water and motor running now.. where normally they get none.. until you are home and plugged in..

    Added a Minn Kota plug so I can overnight charge all batteries plus a Minn Kota battery monitor so I can see if the motor when on is in fact charging the system up. Doesn't cost much extra but having the labor do that right is a very worthwhile expense as is the mounting plate with an on/off switch plus a fuse.

    I love your video! Very informative! I have a question on wire/battery installation.. 1. what size/gauge wire between battery (24V) 2. How do you connect Alternator Charger to house battery and to 24V trolling battery? 3. Can be dual purpose battery group 31 used as trolling motor battery?. Thank you! Best regards.

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  Рік тому

      So you want to use 4ga. Wire for jumper battery to battery . And you would need to have a 3 bank alternator charger 1 bank to each trolling motor battery and one for the house battery.. then of course with any alternator charger it has a lead to go to the cranking battery.. that’s where it picks up the excess voltage. And with the duel purpose batteries.. I’m not a fan.. I feel like they just don’t do either thing very well.. get a cranking battery for cranking or a deep cycle for trolling motors or house batteries.. they are 2 differently made batteries for different applications.. so one isn’t really going to be able to both.. thanks for watching and commenting.. hopefully that helps and let me know if you have any questions.

    Just purchase a Minnkota 2bank charger to install, so I have a 12v system I want it running parallel. So my question is when I connect the charger do I run it pos to neg on one battery which would charge both? Or do I have to connect ea battery to a bank on the charger while still running parallel.? I hope my question is clear?

    How would you wire in 36 volt trolling motor if you only have four batteries to work with? I was thinking of wiring 3 batteries to get 36 volts in series and then use one of those batteries for 12 volt battery one position, and the remaining battery for battery 2. Kind of a series parallel what are your thoughts?

    This was a great visual tutorial using the Traditional Dual Battery Switch. If I had had the room on my boat (19' Bow Rider) I would have gone this direction. Having the switch out in the open is so convenient. I ended up using the Blue Seas Mini Add A Battery in the hold under a seat eliminating the need for manual switching and getting passengers/gear off the seat to get to the switch. Great video!

    Hello, I’m new to boating and my son gave me his 16’ Tracker pro guide SC. I don’t fish for bass, I like trolling for Kokanee. I have a new Scotty 1106 electric downgigger. I have two batteries at this time one for the trolling motor and one for the main motor. I would like to add a third battery, space is problem. In the back there a plastic storage area with a drain. No sure if I can remove it. Eventually I want to have to Scotty’s downrigger’s. I believe I need to run both Downrigger’s off the main battery. If you have time help me figure this out by adding another battery and the best way to wire everything up. I would like to add a battery switch too.

      Yes you would run both downriggers off the cranking battery. I do believe I have added a second battery to one of those boats in the past.. but I can’t remember exactly how I did it.. I’ve moved out to Florida and we don’t see many of those out here like I did in Northern California.. you don’t really need the second battery but if you’re worried about running the battery dead then i would recommend a battery jump pack that you can pick up on line .. they are small and powerful and will save you in a emergency.. thanks for watching and commenting let me know if you have any questions.

    Can you run the negatives to the switch and then put the positives together going through a circuit breaker? You figure when you disconnect a battery you are always supposed to disconnect the negative first then the positive terminal.. So with the switch wired to the negatives, that is what you are doing.

    When installing 12v batteries in parallel for a trolling motor, do you install the positive wire from the trolling motor to one of the two batteries and the negative wire to the negative terminal of the other battery. Or, connect both wires from the trolling more to just one of the batteries.

    Just watch the battery video which was very informative. I just have little 16ft Scout, bought a trolling motor for it. It’s a 12v you mention to run parallel? My question is how hard is it to run the cable from the front to the back for the wiring? Is it easy or should I take it in to the shop? What do you recommend?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes running 2 batteries in parallel will more than double your run time.. all you need to do is run a set of jummper wires positive to positive and negative to negative.. this makes 2 batteries one big 12v battery.. as far as running the wire it depends on how hard it is to fish it through the bilge or gunnel up to the bow. If it is a center console probably going up the middle of your boat would be best.. but all boats are different .. so hard to say without seeing it in person.. a shop would most likely charge you 4 to 6 hrs of labor.. the shop I work for is $110 a hr. Hope that helps.. feel free to ask me if I can be of any more help..

      Thanks for watching the videos! So definitely the charger you have will work great and sounds like you have all the equipment.. you don’t need to have the positive and negative bus bars . You do have a fuse panel under the console that hopefully has another empty couple spots you can use and has a negative bus built into it. Now with the lithium battery for your fish finder . Do you already have that and have it wired up? That seems a bit overkill to run your fish finder .. your crank battery would handle that just fine.. and then you could have your battery run your anchor winch. That also needs a circuit breaker.. cool thing with the new noco chargers is that they can be switched to different battery types per bank. Let me know what questions you have. And I’d be glad to help. I have a Instagram @reel_life_fisherman or my Facebook page reel life fisherman you can message me on those as well and I will respond. Thanks for watching the channel

    If I have 2 house batteries because of my sound system on the boat and wanted to bridge them, would I do it the traditional way? (Join + to + and - to - ?) I'm working on re-wiring on my boat (Thanks to your content) and this is the only question I have Thus far.
    I hope you can help.

      Yes you would hook it up parallel. Positive to positive and negative to negative. But have the load come off one battery positive and the other battery negative. That way it draws both batteries down equally. Hope that make sense. It’s still 12v that way. I’m not talking about wiring series 24v . Thanks for watching and commenting! Let me know if you have any questions.

      @@ReelLifeFisherman yes I also love your channel, I would appreciate the same information! I have a 1983 Thompson Sea Rage Cuddy Cabin with a 305 Chevy engine and a 200hp OMC sterndrive (the old stringer style). I have one starter battery and would like to add a deep cycle battery so that I can also install a stereo system with an amp. However, before I can do this, I have a bigger problem that I need to figure out that maybe you can help me with? Last weekend my son accidentally connected the pos wire to the neg terminal and the neg wire to the pos terminal. There are two 50amp fuses that come off the starter and one of fuses blew. We were at the lake when I discovered what happened and I did not have any extra fuses, so I cut the fuse holder out and spliced a piece of 10g wire between the two ends. The boat started right up. When I put the throttle into gear the engine killed and when I attempted to turn the key, all I could hear was a clicking noise coming from a solenoid on the rear of the engine. Do you have any idea's or information to help me out with this problem? Thank you so much, you are a very informative guy!

    I have a series rigged 24v 2 battery system for the trolling motor on my 21 ft jet boat. Currently the system is dedicated solely to the trolling motor. However, I would also like to use the batteries in parallel 12v mode in an emergency to operate my winch (Extreme shallow water jet boat). Do you know of any way to set up wiring with an appropriate switching system to make this possible?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  5 років тому

      Thanks for checking out the video! So I have never seen wiring set up like the one you are describing.. you would have to have multiple on/off switches like 5.. it would be easier to wire it to a house battery (group 31 deep cycle) then switch to that one and if needed switch it to all which puts the crank battery in parallel.. then if you had to in a emergency carry some jumper cables to start the boat from one of your trolling motor batteries.. hopefully that helps.. let me know if you have any more questions..

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 роки тому

      So there is a set of wires that go to the cranking battery positive and negative.. with a purple wire going to key on ignition hot source.. then on the trolling motor battery side a bank is needed for each trolling motor battery.. so a 24v trolling motor system would need a 2 bank alternator charger.. or a 36v a 3 bank.. just need to make sure your main engine meets the required output voltage.. usually if you have a 75hp and up motor you’re ok.. thanks for watching

    • @ReelLifeFisherman

      So with a a smart charger like the one you have.. you should hook each bank to one battery.. the charger will work as normal.. if you had a 2 bank and just hooked it to one of the batteries hooked in parallel it would take much longer to charge.. the chargers sense each battery so you are not going to hurt the batteries or charger no worries.. thanks for watching let me know if you have any questions..

      Reel Life Fisherman So just to make sure- I’m a rookie- For just the trolling motor batteries I run them together pos to pos and neg to neg and hook each battery to its own charge bank. 12 v motor. That will fully charge batteries separate- The starter battery has its own bank also- When I hookup trolling motor is that pos to pos And neg to neg on the same battery and it will pull power thru the one battery. Thank you for your time!,!

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      Yes to get 2 12v batteries hooked up in parallel.. you hook positive to positive and negative to negative.. then hook the trolling motor to just one battery positive and negative.. the battery charger will charge each battery separately when one bank is hooked to each battery individually.. also I would add.. each battery should be the same when hooking them up in parallel.. same size and rating and ideally the same age and brand..

      It will put a charge to both batteries.. but an isolator will put a charge to both as well the only difference is you can’t switch back and forth with it.. you wire each thing like the engine to one battery and the boat to the other..the best thing is to have a onboard charger that is the best way to keep them charged and healthy..and if your outboard has a stator charging system I wouldn’t run it around all the time with it on both batteries.. it can over work the stator especially if one of the batteries is a deep cycle.. hopefully that makes sense.. let me know if you have any questions about it.. still waking up drinking some coffee..lol

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      Yes I would just use butt connectors and splice them together that way.. if you have a hr meter that also is a easy way to pick up the ignition power.. almost all boats are wired the same and the solid purple wire is ignition power.. the talons and the alternator charger use it as a ignition sensing voltage only .. the talons for the warning alarm if you start the engine while they are deployed.. and the charger to start sending any excess voltage to the trolling motor batteries.. thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions..

      BassQuest thanks glad you like the video! The reasoning for running a crank and a separate house battery.. with a battery selector switch that allows you to choose between battery 1 or battery 2 or both.. is so you always have a back up battery.. if you ran in parallel they could both drain or one battery going bad would take the other one down.. it would become like a Parasite .. that is the main reason.. hope that helps.. and thanks for watching

I have two batteries and when one dies I disconnect one and reconnect to the other. I would like to extend my time using the parallel method. @ReelLifeFisherman  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I’m glad you like the videos! So you should always have a battery charger with one bank for each battery. So if you have 3 batteries you would need a 3 bank charger.. or you could just and a single bank charger and have a 2 bank and a single bank. Let me know if you have any questions thanks for watching the channel!

      No when wiring 2 batteries in parallel.. both should be the exact same battery.. type ,size, rating.. I would even recommend age and brand.. also in parallel the voltage stays the same but amperage doubles .. there are a few other things about parallel wiring also but let me know if you have any more questions.. thanks for watching and commenting..

    I use my cranking battery for minimal house stuff/fish finder. When I add trolling motor battery, was thinking of putting it on the switch like you show in the video.

The first two have a battery type selectors.. and the new noco genius gen 5 has a battery booster if the battery is dead.. most chargers won’t charge a completely dead battery.

      Tom Weigand yes you should always have one bank for each battery.. even though they are 24 volts as far as the trolling motor is concerned, when hooked in series.. the charger will charge each battery as 12 volts.. hopefully that explains it.. if not I have another battery wiring video on my channel too.. let me know if you have any questions anytime.. thanks for watching..

    What size wire do you use for the trolling motor? For a length of 10ft on a 24v system will a 6 gauge be enough or is 4 gauge an overkill. Last, I just relocated my starter battery and need to also extend the battery cables. Going out about 12ft, should I stay with 6 gauge for that or go bigger? I read online going next size bigger never hurts. Thanks in advance.

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 роки тому +1

      6ga is plenty for the trolling motor.. and depending on the size main engine you have would make a difference on the battery cables.. most engine manufacturers recommend you buy extended battery cables from them.. all one piece.. no connections to just extend.. thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions..

    Hello, I have a quick question regarding battery wires. I have two 12V AGM batteries that I'm wiring in series to get 24 v for my trolling motor. What gauge wire do you use to connect the batteries to complete the series connection?

    love your videos,i just bought a never used 2017 hawk xl and i am wondering how hard is it to mount a minn kota and run the wiring? i bought the boat in Victoria BC and have not picked it up yet so i have not been able to have a look at how accessible the bow area is.once again great videos

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      Brian Patenaude awesome congratulations on the boat!! Thanks for watching the videos! So the hardest part is mounting the trolling motor without an access port in the bow.. you can install one.. they did do that at the factory the last few years now.. or carefully mark and drill and tap your mounting bolts.. I would use 1/4 x20 and then use red locktite .. the other thing that is tricky is mounting your batteries.. you can use the step box like i did or you can remove the bulkhead board and make a mounting shelf.. I may do this in the future to get the storage back.. let me know if you have any questions along the way.. thanks again for watching

    Very good video. I'm new to boats so I'm a little confused about wiring the batteries in series or parallel. What is the advantages of either and which situations would they be best suited for?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      For trolling motor wiring.. series bumps up you output to 24 or 36v with 2 or 3 12v batteries.. in parallel you can run 2 12v batteries and keep the output at 12 v but it does double the amps.. some trolling motor are 12 v so running 2 batteries in parallel doubles your run time.. and some trolling motors are 24v or 36v and you have to wire them in series to get that.. hope that helps.. thanks for watching

    When I bought my boat it had one battery. It was for cranking and the electronics (horn, navigation lights, livewell etc.) I am adding two more batteries to run a 24 v trolling motor. My question is that once I add the two new batteries can I also switch all the electronics to them so I have the original battery for just cranking?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому +1

      Warren Miller so with that set up I wouldn’t run anything on the trolling motor batteries but you could use one of them to hook the switch to in a emergency or just carry a set of jumper cables.. I would use the same set up I have.. and have the trolling motor batteries just for the trolling motor..

      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому

      Yeah if you don’t have the room for 4 batteries I would just make sure you have a good cranking battery and keep jumper cables with you.. it’s the easiest way.. you can hook up a battery switch to one of the trolling motor batteries and only switch to that in an emergency.. we hook up bass boats that way..

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 роки тому +1

      mike d so I would check your transducer placement and make sure it is in the best possible location and height.. and the best way to wire the graph is to run a dedicated power wire directly from the battery.. and also try to route the transducer away from any other motor battery leads or trolling motor battery wiring.. thanks for watching the video.. hopefully that helps

      Reel Life Fisherman yes I know the wire and mount are correct until I get to the battery and that where I’m thinking the problem originates. Since our Democratic governor deemed that fishing out of a motor powered boat ( even a single person) was going to spread the virus, I have time to trouble shoot the set up. She’s a real doozy and is more interested in going against the president than making sound decisions and judgements. Thanks for quick response, really appreciate your channel here in Michigan
