- Subnautica is a fantastic survival adventure and I have played through the entire game on the channel with a Let's Play, as well as a Beginner's Guide.
In this review, I will give the game a grade based on the categories of Fun, Controls, Systems and UI, Story, Visuals, Audio, and Style. I also will make a determination on if you should buy the game, based on the type of game it is, the difficulty, value, and replayability.

I absolutely agree with your rating. I get incredibly scared playing games, but Subnautica is my favourite. If you’re not sure if you should play it, just go for it. Take your time and you’ll be fine!
Yes! It's scary but so worth it. I agree--take your time as there is no need to rush--unless you need that O2! haha

This is the game that made me love the survival genre because I feel you’re actually well…trying to survive. I’ve tried other games and I just keep coming back to this for that survival fix.

It's quite different, but in term of survival mechanics it's the, or one of the better survival game imo.
I prefer Subnautica for some reasons, but not really for the survival

Great review, and your excellent beginner’s guide episode 1 showed me how to not die from dehydration right off the bat. I’ve just started playing it. You gave this game an A+ but said it’s not your favorite game of all time. So what is or are your favorite game or games of all time, that you would score even higher, if you don’t mind me asking?

@@DrIncompetent That would be awesome and much appreciated! I just got back into gaming about a year ago when I bought a PS5. Last console before that was the Atari 2600. I am embarrassed by the riches of my backlog. Your channel is about the 5th gaming channel I’ve discovered and subscribed to and I don’t think any of them have a top 10 list, because I’ve definitely looked. Maybe there’s a good reason for that!

Couldn't agree more. I got it as one of the free PSN games eons ago but sat in my library. Once I started watching your beginners guide, I downloaded it right away! It is rare for me to finish a game and immediately jump into it again, which I did. Taking my time on the 2nd playthrough though to enjoy the game more.
Debating getting Below Zero now, how would you compare the 2 games?
I tell you what, the second playthrough was a blast for me too! I could relax and enjoy how awesome the game is! I think BZ is very good and a fine sequel. I personally don't rate it as highly as the first, but it's still really fun if you like the OG :D I think Subnautica is A+, Sub BZ is an A. Both are great!

I love the vid bro! you convinced me to get it even though i have thalassophobia, my question is for my first time ever getting a game like this should i buy below zero or the original one which one is better and more for, also are the graphics good on the original one?
The graphics are good in both! Slightly better in the second, but the first holds up imo. There are some jump scares in the first game with big fish, but once you get used to them I think it was no big deal. They are both underwater!

I just beat subnautica today, oh my god, I’m both happy and sad that’s it over. If you are watching this to choose if you want to buy it, go ahead. You may get thalasaphobia or however you spell it when you play, I for sure did get it, others might not, but it’s worth the money

I got it free bc play at home in 2020 very fun game its worth it and cheap like 10 bucks and if you got it for free back in 2020 I extremely recommend playing it may have a small map but alot of lore etc

It is a fantastic game. I've been playing on PS on and off for a couple of years and am finally approaching the endgame. Its a great example of gameplay being more important than cutting edge visuals. It does what it does very well and creates a nice sense of emersion (pun not intended, but I'll take it). I've found a few bugs but nothing game breaking. The worst one was losing the cabinets on my Cyclops when attacked by "the big guy" down below 😄. I will say moving to the PS5 from the 4 solved most of them and sped up the loading times considerably. It's also one of the few games my partner has taken a genuine interest in, which is a bonus.
PS, value? I got it for free when PlayStation was encouraging everyone to stay home during Covid, so yes, it was great value 😄.

I'm a bit late to this video but i'll still ask, how good can you play this game in parts, i'm still in school so I don't have time to play for 2 hours on end, I want to know if I can have fun playing this game for 30 minutes and continue the next day
Yes! I did this myself. Sometimes I would stream it for 2hrs at a time, but I also did 30 minute chunks and it was fine. You can save at any time, so just pick up where you left off and it works great!

I believe it runs in 4k now on PS5, but the video is in 1080p and my capture device caps at 1080p, so there you go ;) haha

I'm about 4 hours in on the PS4 and think I'm done. The UI is cumbersome, inventory space is too small, constantly having to surface for air even after upgrades is annoying, and catching food is not fun. I want to like this game but gameplay design has too many roadblocks. I still cant get over the fact that the UI text box descriptions cover and obscure the items I'm trying to build (as shown in video). So poorly layed out. Move those text boxes out of the way developers! To the side of the screen with all that empty space! My goodness its so frustrating.
Oh darn, sorry to hear you aren't enjoying it. Have you found the grav trap yet? That pretty much solves the food issue until you get planters!

Worth it in 2024? NOPE!
This is a 10-year old game and they are still trying to charge full-price most of the time. Not even worth it at 50% off. If you can snag it for 9.99 or less, sure...go for it. UWE pushed out an 'update' in 2022, what they called Living Large (2.0) but it didn't fix ANY of the most egregious bugs, and they had 8 LONG years to fix them. The biggest miss was Auto-save and Multiple-save slots. People were clamoring for those two things since 2014, and UWE FAILED to listen to its users in early-access.
Replayability is QUITE LOW. Once you play it the first time, a second time is just for speeding up your gameplay to the end. Everything stays in the same place and all the story triggers stay the same. Nothing is randomized. Once you start a second game, you'll be like..."ohh, i remember this...OHHH, i remember this...OHHHHHHHH, i remember this everything is the same as my first playthrough"
Mods! The heyday of mods was from 2018-2020. Soooo many great mods were created for the game then. But when modders saw UWE wasn't going to fix its BIG BUGS after 6 years, the best modders started leaving the game. When they updated the game in 2022, UWE really mucked up the gaming code and 95% of the mods stopped working. UWE had the audacity to tell modders they would have to 'go update your mods to fit our new code structure'. At that point, the vast majority of well-known modders quietly flipped them the bird and left. The modding community for Subnautica has all but collapsed for the 2.0 version. For me, over 70% of the mods I use have not been updated and the modders who made them have either disappeared or moved on, so...no way to play them in 2024. If you want to experience great mods, including some amazing DLC-sized mods, you'll have to play the Subnautica version before 2.0 came out.

@ DrInc - "...a few people out there who didn't like this game"?? Seriously? I don't think someone who recommends playing a game with mods is someone who didn't like the game. There were quite a few, actually...MANY, who complained about how Unknown Worlds handled their updates and the abnormal length of time it took for them to push out the megabugs fix in the LL update. Plus, let's not forget how badly they mucked up the SBZ game. I know many will be waiting to see what they churn out with Subnautica 3 before giving them any money in EA.
