He's a piece of trash and the only party of that story worse than him are the government lunatics who put his mother in prison for something she didn't do which they had the CHEEK to call perversion of justice. I say this admittedly without knowing for sure if she did it or not but there's no reason for him to lie at this point after it's all said and done. If she was the one who drove him I guarantee they would have video evidence of her dropping him at the airport, airports are littered with cameras. I've seen other cases where the Australian justice system assumes a guilty until proven innocent posture, from what I've seen it wouldn't be out of place in a 3rd world country...

my heart goes out to everyone involved in this story in some way or another even if the 'bad actors' of it commit ip theft or whatever, because the trauma induced from their severe legal treatment is much more severe than any crime these people ever commit from their bedrooms (justin is a little different because he was more of a post office guy and not a bedroom blackhat kinda guy, but even still). their extraordinary talents & skills they honed over years were neglected and punished so severely instead of being praised and encouraged in a safe and controlled way and it breaks my heart to see so many lives negatively impacted by true passion, and some lives irreversibly put on a trajectory towards their young deaths, lives irreversibly defined by poor decisions & boundary pushes & bad company & all of the resulting fallout.
i'm so grateful for jack having organized so many voices to come together and talk about these experiences, it's very sobering and really widens my worldview, and it's all done in such a highly organized and professional way that i can never not commend, i hope for peace in the lives of everyone involved with these two episodes & their production

I appreciate the intention of posts like this, but at the same time I can't stand at all the framing that their talent usurps their actions as if this would apply to ANY other situation than hacking and IT. "They were so talented and it was ignored" is meaningless. Many criminals are talented with what they do. But it is the CRIME that sets them apart, it is NOT their talent or the consequences that happen afterwards.
Many people are talented and NOT criminals. Many people would love access beyond Microsoft security. Many people would love to take free Xbox prototypes from Microsoft HQ before they release. Many people would love to sell these tax-free for $5,000+ each. Many people would love to never face the consequences of their actions.
These kids are nothing to look up to at all, especially Dylan the one who fled his trial so that his mother had to go to prison instead. Then he has the audacity to say she didn't mind and they're cool all while never having served anything.

@@PK-vw3gd i don't see talent, skill or ability in anything as things that determine anyone's worth worth or morally justify any actions, so you're absolutely correct they are nothing to look up to. but it's stories that go so in-depth like this into the details of how passion can lead people down wrong paths that really humanize them and put into perspective the opportunities and paths their life could have taken, so yes while their crimes set them apart from others with similar skill levels that aren't criminals, it's a shame that their lives devolved into lives of crime and that there wasnt sufficient intervention or opportunities offered beforehand that would have hopefully helped reduce or mitigate the want, need, or factors that influenced them individually to commit those crimes that would end up defining their lives and subjecting them to the turmoil of the consequences they have to face now... hope this makes my point of view clearer:)

This was a great piece(both parts). It's a great wake up call to some younginz that may benifiet. Its so sad and enraging at points especially with Nathan and the others who had their lives destroyed by people who dont understand the problem. However, its a great story in general. It's interesting to consider how group of still just kids could all kinda fall in together online and what happens when they do good and/or bad. The contents/contexts of each of their stories are of course interesting on their own, but the overall picture of the situation/s, the interactions, repercussions, paths taken, decisions made, etc. is a fantastic modern fable/reflection of what "we" are like these days. Thanks!

I have unfortunately been through the system and been on probation for 4 yrs. I can 100% attest to the fact that probation officers can be complet assholes and intentionally try to be as in helpful or understanding as they can legally be. It’s ridiculous… and a lot of time all about the money. Keeping you on probation paying those monthly fees for the service and everything else that goes along with it ankle monitors drug classes breathalyzers and all the rest. I feel for ya man glad you came out the other side. The day I got off probation I almost couldn’t believe it was over. I smoked a fat blunt!!

    OK, now hear me out.
Dylan was not probably not 17, because he is a young narcissistic federal agent.
Being young and narcissistic, he orchestrating the whole thing to score points.
Nathan figured it so (Dylan, our agent - made it look like Nathan set them up)
Nathan was freaking out early in the story because of this.
Later on their way to court Nathan said Dylan took this all too far, and that David didn't deserve any of this.
He had realized he was set up by the government, he was powerless and he knew it.
Which is why he just wanted to get in and out of court, just do what we have to do.
David either knew early on, or he was oblivious to this.
If like I think, he figured it out pretty soon and being older/wise, he though it dangerous to out Dylan.
So he played along, oblivious that he was getting smoked by a government office.
By doing this he could make sure that he at least got some lube while getting fucked.
I'm serious, Dylan fucked them over so hard it hurt to listen this.
Just listen up, he makes a point out every little thing that could draw attention away from him.
Acting like it was all a game, of course it is a game when you look at it from the perspective of Law Enforcement.
If anybody knows this Dylan, I advice you remove him from your contacts.

She, no, IT, should have been (dishonorably?) discharged *decades* ago; that is some extreme power trip behavior.
American police are already at an all-time low of public image, and that thing is still out there, NOT helping.
Maybe they'd be happy to make an example out of it? Or is the negative talk about American cops true?

As someone who has seen a friend get treated like shit by a PO I feel for Synod and I want to let ANYONE with a PO know that the job of a PO is to prevent you from reoffending. And that you can REQUEST A NEW PO at anytime and explain that this PO is possibly going to far and they do take these requests seriously.
My friend after 6 months attempted suicide. And basically sent the judge or whatever a bunch of medical info from a psychologist saying "this person is making his life worse and needs to be placed with another officer" and they took that seriously and within maybe 5 days he had a new PO.

nobody ever talks about this because of how miraculous narcan is (keep in mind for hundreds of years there was basically _nothing_ you could do for somebody that OD'd on opiates, then all of a sudden we had a perfect antidote that could bring people back from the dead) _but_ the actual experience of being "narcan'd" from an overdose is one of the worst feelings imaginable. You basically speedrun the entire withdrawal process. It's like the exact opposite of whatever pleasure you'd feel from the opiates. Except when you OD on opiates there's a max amount of pleasure you can experience before you start to die and it stops being pleasant. (That's another thing that I don't think very many people realize is that OD'ing on opiates is not a pleasant descent into nothing-ness. It's incredibly uncomfortable. You throw up a bunch and sweat like a bitch while all your organs shut down. You do not want to experience either end of the journey) but when you're narcan'd there's no real ceiling for how awful it's going to be, the more you took the more opiates will need to be ripped out of your opiate receptors and the more painful it'll be.

The attitude of that probation officer towards Sonad during his opioid addiction and all of the aftermath just goes to show how backwards law enforcement is regarding drug addiction. Although many addicts may commit crimes in order to support their habits, addicts themselves should not be treated like criminals. If there was an easier way for addicts to get help and weren’t treated first and foremost as criminals they wouldn’t need to be “real” criminals. There simply needs to be more compassion towards those with substance abuse issues.

I feel awful for Holly, she was barely involved in things and never really got into the more serious stuff the other kids were doing. As a young trans woman myself, life is already hard enough, and I've had an amazing support system, but to have family that doesn't support you, and to have to go through 2 years in prison, already hating every second of it, I can't imagine the mental anguish she was dealing with. I wish she could have had things turn out better, and that she didn't have to leave us the way she did. Had things turned out differently from the legal side of things for her, I'm sure she would've grown to be an amazing woman in the tech field if she pursued a career there.

41:36 that kid is lying about the DoD computers. He might not know that he is lying though. The computers or hard drives had stickers on them that said “All data has been destroyed by performing a data wipe per DOD STD 5220.22 M Level 3”. I have stacks of yard drives like that that came with Dell/EMC2 disk shelves.
He did NOT poses servers that came from the DoD. Even he did have servers that came from the DoD he wouldn’t have known they came from the DoD unless a tech that worked at the DoD took one home when it was being discarded (lots of companies have mechanisms to allow this) and then gave it away or sold it. Typically hardware goes through recyclers and I wouldn’t doubt it if because it’s the government there is no way for people to just take free stuff home when it’s being discarded.
    Anyways total bullshitter.
Also I think he is not lying about the retail value of the computer equipment. I have over $250,000 worth of equipment in my rack and it only takes up half my rack. My rack is at least a $10k rack maybe $20k it’s a fully kitted out EMC2 rack. The dark vador looking kind. But I haven’t even spent $5k on all the hardware including the rack if I don’t count what I spent on the hard drives.
None of my hardware is over 10 years old either except on Haswell-E server that’s in it might be 10.
None of its worth much at all. I just happen to live in a data center area and don’t have to pay shipping. Recyclers sell this stuff for cheap. This hardware is all worthless to companies. It’s only use is to small business and consumers. So for example I have a 24 port 10Gbit switch that uses ASICs and it’s at least $5k new right now. But used without a service contract it’s only worth $600. I got it for free. It was destined for the dumpster.
So $50-100k? Sure, I have a 60 bay disk storage drawer (EMC DS60) and the 4 node blade server that controls it. That would have cost $100k easy. It was being thrown away with 30 6TB SAS drives.
So yeh full of shit… oh and those DS60s are $1100 from recyclers without drives. Pennies on the dollar! The drives used on the other hand… $100/ea probably.
So don’t believe that kid at all.
