Joshua Evans is inspired by the likes of The Pharcyde, Bad Brains and Sarah McLachlan. Add in a dash of Kanye West and it’s easy to understand why the Minnesota native, who performs under the moniker deM atlaS, infuses his music with a mix of sharp-edged bars and bluesy vocals. Back in 2013 he dropped his debut EP ‘Charle Brwn,’ which highlighted his quirky affiliation for the Peanuts gang and earned him a spot on the Rhymesayers Entertainment roster. Since aligning with Slug and company, deM atlaS has released a string of critically acclaimed projects, such as his MF Doom collaborative mixtape, ‘MF Dem’. Earlier this year, his latest effort, ‘Bad Actress,’ arrived, which finds him bringing the force of his talents together across 15 tracks. Standouts include the swaying “Pneumonia,” “Gratitude” and “Bad Loves Company.” deM atlaS performed a live version of the latter track for us. Stripped of any accompaniments, his bounced through a stirring rendition. Check it out.
