    I really enjoyed the opening but the really memorable one for me was actually the ending. Although that might just be because I'm a sucker for having the seiyuus sing.

    By the way I'm amazed at the number of people who call Hibike uninteresting, claim the stakes aren't high enough (well sorry in-universe for the characters they are) or that it pushes style before substance. Why should a sports/music ANIME be Coach Carter or Remember the Titans? Even if it was the movies would still be better and non-anime fans would still likely ditch Hibike. Watch Giant Killing if you want a realistic sports anime with "high stakes" and adults.

      Sephyxer Perhaps from a standpoint of storytelling that's true I admit (Good point). but I generally think of character as the essence of a person

    Parts of your review reminded me of points a guy named Flawfinder made on MAL while bringing up some new ones like the show being more of a sports than a music anime. Liked and subbed

    Taki-sensei had a little whiplash sub-plot with zucchini (shuuichi lol) but at least Taki-sensei didnt go ape shit on shuuichi and he (shuuichi) managed to inspire Kumiko to get better too. Taki-sensei also acknowledged shuuichi performance by giving a smile during the final performance after the part where shuuichi was struggling before but nailed it. At least no chairs where harm during the times taki-sensei was roasting shuuichi.

      jondonom sounds interesting, but my personal take on Whiplash is a lot darker, I really think the Fletcther Character is just all around bad and ultimately, little Miles will end up dead, drugged up at 30 (and maybe one of the "greats" but I dunno)

    Good overview, but I think the negatives needed more attention. Though the animation is high quality and consistent, I felt that, episodes 8 and 11 aside, very little was actually memorable. Most of the time was taken up in a detailed, yet blandly coloured and uninteresting room. Story wise, most side characters are terribly annoying, and the series didn't pick and choose its focal points very well. I mean, we spend two episodes on a re-audition with two characters who could easily have been cut out, but Reina's feelings and Askua's attitude are never addressed? The opening and ending aren't that good to me, I can name several superior ones from just Hibike's season. Don't get me wrong, you did a great job breaking down the positives, and I agree that only slice-of-life fans will find this worthwhile, but for me there were just too many missed opportunities.

    • @TasX
      @TasX 8 років тому

      as with many slice of life stories, it's like real life. There isn't a 100% on every subject, and the beauty you find is not in the special, but in the everyday scenarios

    • @houndnobleman876
      @houndnobleman876 8 років тому

      +Radi Bear (Radioactive TeddyBear) I don't necessarily agree with that logic. Oregairu was my favourite series from 2015, and it was a slice of life where no matter what the characters did, they just couldn't fix the world around them. However, they as characters grew, and I feel that Euphonium didn't do that. By having Reina not confront Taki, not lose the part, not break down really and not develop a full romance with Kumiko, the series prevented her from growing. She just sort of stayed the same the whole way through.

    • @TasX
      @TasX 8 років тому

      Hound Nobelman There is a lot of character development going on, but it's in the animation, not in the plot. That's how KyoAni works. At first, I didn't notice much (only watched for the art and seemingly lacking plot). But then I applied the skills I learned in English class to the show. You will not believe how much it worked.
      An example is to look at the physical distance between Kumiko and Reina during key points when they meet

    • @houndnobleman876
      @houndnobleman876 8 років тому

      +Radi Bear (Radioactive TeddyBear) I saw this series over half a year ago and my stance has not changed. Visual representation of intimacy is insufficient if that's the only way you express it. Unlimited Blade Words, Bakemonogatari and Oregairu also do this, but they also express character relationships through vocal mannerisms, changes in perspective once they know more about the other. Hibike had some well done scenes, like in episode 8, but I could not for the life of me really care in the long term.

      Hound Nobelman
      In Hibike, there are all of the things you listed.
      But it's all about the perspective, and which types of scenes viewers find important and their relation to the story.

    Kumiko wasn't that likable to me in the beginning. She came across as one of those apathetic teenagers who're 2kool4skool and would rather coast by with a relatively normal, uneventful life. Nothing wrong with living in a way that society expects you to live, (I guess the worst crime would be that it'd be kinda boring?) but usually characters who lack drive or passion towards anything, (without so much as even an odd quirk) usually make me roll my eyes because they bring down everyone else's mood with their "wow calm down, lol" kind of attitude.
    Thankfully she doesn't stay this way, and honestly I would say that it was a smart decision to introduce her in such a matter, as it leaves room for character development later on in the series.

    • @Departedreflections
      @Departedreflections  9 років тому +1

      Lori P I didn't really get the 2kool4skool vibe - more like too cool for band - but even then not so much. In any case I didn't really have an problem with her initial attitude but she definitely does change (I like to think for the better)
      Thanks for watching : )

    • @Lori_P89
      @Lori_P89 9 років тому +1

      Departed Reflections I guess I took notice of scenes where she was wearing her hair up on the first day, or skipping breakfast, or only grabbing a slice of toast made me think that she was 2kool for anything in a kind of apathetic way and not just a band geek type of way, but yeah I definitely think she changed for the better :)
