Nothing compares to playing on calf. The sound, the feel, the rebound, easier on the joints.

In the early 60s I had a snare with calf on both top and bottom.
In Winter, the bottom head would literally explode like a gunshot, with the cold weather ..
It was always during the night and scared the hell out of everyone.
    Thank God for plastic heads.

Indeed there was good reason for Wilhelm Friedrich (later anglicized in William Frederick) Ludwig calling his brand new plastic heads "WeatherMaster".

Calfskin has like a natural dampening to it. Not as open and bright as the plastic.

They both sound fine, but I like the sound of the plastic more because it has a little more attack and sounds more defined to me.

They are tuned about a major 6 a part, best part of an octave. Would be super interested in a more fine tuned comparison! Love the concept.

Great playing & beautiful drums . Same snare character but bit different. I think brightness gives an illusion to volume sometimes. I have dynasonic but the kangaroo 🦘 for louder venue playing doesn’t work on it for me . Jazz yes

I had RYan make me Camel & Mule.. Not calf.. thin reso side.. for all my Gretsch, Rogers and Slingerland sets.. on flesh hoops for these vintage shells.

By warmer sound, I would say more "thudish." Calf skin sounds ok, but considering the temperature and humidity issue, I feel it's a novelty.

    Aha
    The shells are Craviotto.
I have a Remo Skyntone on my Craviotto Maple with the Hybrid Edges. Like the calf; more warmth, less attack.
Still want to try a genuine Calfskin on it.

It would all come down to how indestructible each one was.

Much better the plastic, more open wide and still focused sound as calf. ...in my opinion.

The calf head he’s using came exclusive with that slingerland snare, but if I remember correctly he’s had stock of similar calfskin heads, or atleast has in the past.

Why calf instead of cowhide? Does the baby's skin sound better than the mommy's?

I found a star drums snare drum at the landfill it was a faded blue sparkle and it had a king stone drum head but it was clear and I still have it.on my Ludwig down beat ringo wrap I bought some calf skin and it’s sounds great then I switched to wooden tips drum sticks

They both sound the same but one of them was made from skinning a baby animal and the other costs 1/5 as much
