Wow...you made me go look in my old drafting tool box. Yes I have an eraser shield!!! I forgot how handy it was. I was a detail draftsman right after college. I used the eraser shield on Mylar and vellum with koh-I-noor technical pens and an electric eraser. I worked as aTechnical illustrator on the board until I switched to CAD. I have LEROY lettering set....use in the 40’s thru the 70’s. Look it up ... really cool system used by draftsman and engineers to have consistent letter for engineering drawings. I have Braddock Rowe Lettering triangles that quickly set up your lettering guide lines. You might find them handy for your calligraphy layouts.
I have 2 or 3 of these. One of my watercolor/calligraphy instructors showed us how to use the 3 small slots, to make tiny guidelines, for greetings, on our watercolor Christmas cards. We use one of those 3 slots for our tiny greetings, in Roman capitals, near the bottom of the front of our watercolor cards. Thanks for all the other tips too!
Thank you for all the tips! I actually own one, but I had no idea what it was for, so I was just using it as a straight edge. The wierd tool I always try to keep on hand is my ruler that helps me center stuff. It’s marked from the middle, rather than the edges.
Whoa! I love all the things you can do with an eraser shield! When you erased your pencil marks within the dot holes on the shield, and, then revealed perfect dots on the 'A', my mind was blown! I totally need that tool!
Back in the 60s and earlier, when all documents were typed, this tool was to my knowledge (although your use would make sense also) for correcting typing errors. You would select appropriately for the letter, number, punctuation mark or even phrase that was to be erased (or in later days painted over with liquid paper) and the guide let you exercise the degree of control you describe in your video. Like you, I have also used it as a stencil, and it truly is surprisingly multi purpose for an abundance of things. I've had a green plastic one for decades, that appears & disappears sporadically in my home, and although I haven't used it in ages, I always know (when it turns up) it should remain a keeper item. Thanks for reminding me to go look for it.
I finally bought it yesterday. The cashier didn’t know what it was and I was able to explain what it could be used. So excited to use it. Thanks again for the tutorial 😊
I can’t believe that I pulled out my eraser shield for the first time today. I was trying to sketch a snowy scene, but wasn’t sure how to lighten the paper to suggest snow on tree branches. I immediately thought of the eraser shield even though I’d never used it before. It met my needs. Thank you for more ideas.
I don't think this is much of a surprise, but I always keep a Blackwing on me. My other two favorites are the Ames lettering guide and the Wescott 6 inch clear ruler. The Ames lettering guide is a bit more difficult to use, but its still great for guidelines. The Wescott ruler has a protractor in the middle of it so you can also use it to make any degree line and you can see through it (make lining stuff up even easier). Both are just a couple bucks on Amazon
Oh, and then you could use that eraser marker that you found out of Germany with this. Thinking of the dots on a letter that you have already done in either pen/brush pen. Need to get that eraser stuff from Germany and this tool. Thank you!!
I have had that lovely little thing in my pencil case or a few years because it came free with a set I bought. I used it for a majority of things you have shown today, but I never knew that's what it was actually made for. Thanks for clearing up what it is. :)
I have a flexible curve (basically a bendable ruler) that is 18" long and maybe 1/2" wide, plastic outside and must be some kind of metal inside. Anyway you can create curves to trace with it. Less than $10 (I actually got it as a prize in school for something I can't remember), very compact, super useful.
What a great addition to my toolkit for lettering!!! Thanks Becca, for everything you have taught me and your wonderful creative mind!! You are a great inspiration and I really enjoy watching your videos....
It is much easier to use with a BIC stick eraser (it's white and comes in a case like a pen that you can advance the eraser as it gets used). You can flatten the tip by holding it perpendicular and erasing until it is flat. The edge then fits in the opening to the eraser shield.
Thanks for sharing this. I've never seen one of these before. Now I'm going to have to get one. Where can I find them? And what eraser are you using? It looks like it works really well.
You can find eraser shields anywhere-in the school supply aisle of your local store, in your craft store(usually in the drawing area), on art supply sites, Amazon, etc. And the eraser looks like a white hi-polymer eraser (also known as a vinyl eraser). Pentel makes a good one, Faber Castel has a good one, and so does Stadtler(it’s usually called the Mars Plastic eraser), but any white eraser should do well on graphite, no matter the brand.
I have one that I occasionally use, but never thought of the many uses for it. Thanks for the tips! Apparently, I have not used it often enough because I have no idea where it is! 🤪
Ok, so not a keep in your pencil case tool...but I find my rotary cutter, mat and rulers super useful. I have been a quilter for ~20 years and it was a natural thing. I have one rotary cutter with an older blade specifically for paper. This lets me cut paper neatly and accurately to whatever size I need. I can also buy the full sheets which is more economical
French Curves are also used in drafting, in H/S we had a choice between French and Flexi-curves and the French Curves always produced the cleanest curves
I've looked at these before, but I've wondered how they don't turn into cheese graters for your eraser when you erase over them - don't the sides of the little shapes chew up your eraser, or are they beveled and are so small we can't see them?
That looks cool, but doesn't it chew up your eraser? I keep buttons in my pencil case for when I need to make perfect small circles. I have cleaned off a small oval deodorant cover to trace for ovals. But the thing I like most is a small punch that makes perfectly rounded corners on cards. It was originally sold by a scrapbooking company to be used with photos.
Good grief. In case you’re totally new to UA-cam, check the description box. Most people put up a link there, which she did. Have you people never been shopping before? Do you have a Walmart or a target? Even the local grocery stores often carry them in the school supply aisles. Or craft stores have them in the drawing aisle
Great tool. Problem is to send it to Switzerland the shipping fee varies from $ 30 to $182... and it's no joke. Got the screenshot If you tell me how to send it to you, I will
Just buy one from your local big box store (like Walmart or target) or you can find them in craft stores, usually in the drawing aisle. They are only a few dollars, $10 is overpriced even in Canadian dollars.

architecture and drafting tools are so underrated.
Perfect! Now I want to know EVERYTHING you have in your lettering kit! LOL

I've not come across an eraser shield before but so glad I signed up to your newsletter, as I'd still be oblivious and it's brilliant.
My Dad was an Architect. He gave me mh first eraser tool. I learned many things about lettering from him. My love for calligraphy for one.....
Interesting, have never seen it before, sounds like a great tool. Smart tip for erasing. Thanks for telling us.

I finally purchased this item! Love it! It makes erasing so clean and precise. Thank you 😊
lol This tool jumped out at me so I bought it having no idea what it was! Glad i bought it and also glad you made this video!

I was like, okay, uh huh, UNTIL you put the dots on! So adorable!

Wow! Thanks for sharing the eraser tool. I've never seen it before. I shall be looking for one now.

I use this tool all the time in my adult coloring - it helps to erase little tiny bits accurately. Thanks for the tips on how you use it!
I have one, never even knew how to use it! Thanks!
Thank you for this! Between this video and the mention of sand erasers in your Instagram story, you have made the day of this left-handed smudger!!!
Thank you,
I'm going to use it more now that you showed us how
Thank you so much for this vid! I’ve seen these around and have been wondering about them. Such a cool too❣️😊✨
I just saw this at my university bookstore, I wasn’t sure what it was for lol. Now I will have to go back to get it 😆😆
Thanks for the wonderful info. It was in my fathers things and didn’t really know what it was.
Oh wow. I never realised I needed one of these until now!
I have one of these! Now I know what to do with it. I love my Lettermate with lines for addresses.
WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!
Very cool! I've seen that tool often where I used to work but never knew what it was for. Thank you for sharing 😊
This is great Art work..you are very good and have given me a lot of inspiration..I learn a lot. .
Thank you very much for letting me😍😍😍
I have kneadable erasers and French curves and pencil erasers in my pencil case all the time. But this is amazing! Thank you 💖
So cool! You could also use it for help with rounded corners on paper!
Wow all these little (BIG) things that I need to know about.
Many thanks for this tip. Really useful
I have one of those! Never used it for lettering, but I will now!
Mind blown! Did not know there was such a tool LOL thanks for sharing
My favorite tool is my onwards eraser. No erasure! And it's fun to play with.
I so had one of these too bet its i my old case gotta pull it out thank u for sharing :-)
I’ve discovered the wonder of the rolling ruler!
Never seen this before - I think I will add this to my pencil case :)
I have three if these, one in each pencil/pen pouch. And don't forget, these are great for tearing washi tape.
My pencil case will forever hold kneaded erasers 😌 and a drafting compass. I’m curious about this shield though!
Such a creative tool!
😯🤯 I have never heard of this tool! Thanks for sharing ❤️ I keep a nice small straight edge like the ruler from your bundle in my pencil case ✏️
Thanks
It has nice rounded corners as well...
Game changer! Whoa!!
I have to dig mine out from design school! You could also use the circle for checklists !
Thanks. I have one, but had no idea how it’s supposed to be used.
Thank you for the tips!
I actually have this but didn't know how it was intended to be used. That's awesome, thank you!

Loved this video. I went to the link and bought it.

So cool.
Wow!
Know the eraser shield, had one for draughting, but, don’t know where it is? Could we use it in course?
In my art box I have a good sharpener. After buying many sharpeners I bought the Prisma pencil sharpener and it is worth the price.
I use mine sometimes to trim my eyebrows when I'm not writing!
Ames lettering guide
Interesting.
Awesome!
Love it!! Although all I could see when you were using the tool was a sad face and like a big mean mugger face!!! I laughed and laughed!
Love from India
Along those lines, there is a variety of curved rulers associated with sewing called French Curve rulers.
French Curves are also used in drafting, in H/S we had a choice between French and Flexi-curves and the French Curves always produced the cleanest curves

It’s thin enough it doesn’t really tear up an eraser. It doesn’t have really sharp edges either
Cool
... and those corners to shape cards!

I have a corner punch like you describe and I LOVE it!!
@@penelopefp give it a go on your greeting cards! It makes them look so pretty and special.
@@lisamacintyre589 check out the Tombow Mono Zero eraser. That paired with this card = erasing delight!
Well ❤️❤️
Swiss Army knife! You remembered!
In my pencil case I keep a Blackwing point sharpener.
Woww😍😍
Woah
Where do we get one???

Amazon dot de has it. Can’t type address as my comment keeps getting deleted.
First viewer!!
woohoo.... what eraser were you using?
A good item to have...another item to order from Amazon they are $10. Your link for this shows $8.00 for shipping to Canada????????
