I discovered this game when I was 15 years old. I sank months into it. An entire written notebook filled with notes. And yes I finished it. Probably my all-time favorite.
began with Ultima V. I was in a storer called "Software Ect." in 1988 at age 17/18 or something. I liked the box cover and the husband/wife gamers at the store(they were boomers 30ish at that time) said they had played IV. I was into Zelda. But was impressed with the sailing and it seemed more indepth than Zelda. The guy suggested I buy V as it was even better. I agree it was but you need to play IV first! I bought V and it blew me away. Zelda was a video game small scale compared to the subtlty and depth of Ultima V! So I played it about 1/4 through and didn't understand it so I got Ulitma IV and competely understood. Competed IV and transfered that character to V and completed it with understanding of what the game was about, and stealing and wondering around looking for gold was not the way to play these games!
I had an Apple II GS and it did have music potential but I missed out. This was around 1988. Apple II GS had no version so I settled with the Apple II version. their is a "mockingboard" and my Dad seriouisly considered it when he often saw me enjoy it so much but we never got one. It was his computer anyway, not mine!
I know you posted this a while ago, but I just wanted to say this is awesome! I had this game on the C64. Me and my friends made a homemade strategy guide for this. So much fun! Looking forward to seeing the playthrough!
The beads represent your choices; the white bead is the Virtue that you picked, and the black bead the one you rejected. They're ordered from left to right in the order Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility. Whenever the game lists off the Virtues or anything related to them, it always does it in this specific order (which is your clue for unscrambling the word in a certain puzzle if the player isn't good at Jumble). The choices you make pick your starting class; you get the class associated with the Virtue you end up with. Also, the two Virtues in your final choice start at a higher rank of enlightenment than the other six
12:03 The position of the bead represents the Virtue and the white one is the one you chose vs the black one which you rejected. The bead orders seem to be Honesty Comp Val Just Sac Honor Hum Spir. IDK why you spawned in Moonglow; you picked 3 Compassions which should make you a Bard in Britain.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, who's ever played this game for any amount of time forgets it. It was revolutionary, not because of its graphics, because for the first Time your actions had serious consequences on finishing the game. Play it like most rgps back then or even today and you'll never win. You had to live life with the eight virtues of The Avatar.
they affect both your stats and starting class. but here the most important thing they affect is the Karma of the virtue you choose and which cards you favored prior this. Justice is so difficult to increase I pick Druids often. they are not really what I want as my main character but they do speed along your Avatarhood.
virtue questions are not to be taken too seriously. I'd go Paladin if I wanted a Paladin. It is not the questions it is what virture they represent and they are all good!
Just started this series. I thought you would've started as a Bard based on your choices with the cards? I understand if you changed your mind because you'd have to play without Iolo otherwise. :)
Actually the game uses the answers to the cards to determine the class of the character. I wasn't sophisticated enough to try to manipulate my answers toward a particular class.
Yeah, each class/city/npc is related to a given virtue. Compassion/Britain/Iolo. He chose Compassion thus should be a bard starting outside of Britain.

It's so good. Best of the NES RPGs.

The Baldur's Gate of old. Still magnificent and full of magic.
I remember playing this all through 8th grade. I played the C64 version specifically and I still remember all the music.

This brings back so many memories. I went to that site and downloaded the game and plan to play it myself...someday.
What site?
My first RPG. i was 8. It was a ROUGH first RPG. So good!!
Came here to learn to play Ultima, but didn't realize I needed a 5 year degree in RPG studies. I may sit this out and just watch you.
Ultima IV and V were a bit clunky. I loved Ultima VI and VII, those were the sweet spot and still hold up pretty well today.
Great game. I still have the physical books for this game.

Btw, the commodore 64 version will superior to all others.
@@kevinbroderick3779 You're absolutely right on both counts.
One of my favorite games when I was a kid.
me too
I played this on the C128 in 1987 but never finished it..it was hard but really enjoyable..
The choices for the cards did not affect your stats, but your starting class. Valour = warrior, Humility = Shepherd, etc.

Nostalgia sure is great
Memories, memories.. 🤓
I bought that game new. Played endless hours.
best game ever, man

Nice video series, but why did you make the old gypsy woman sound like Vizzini from A Princess Bride? ;)
I don't recall that Vizzini was my direct inspiration, but I do love that character.
so no one is going to bring up he is at moonglow and I'm going to guess a mage not a bard?
something is really odd why did he get mage not bard?
You came across this game where? I couldn’t understand
GOG
What Hamguy said
Keith. You are amazing!! I used to play this game everyday on my IIe. Your narrating is the best. I'm stuck on this and will watch all the episodes.
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
