I saw these guys way before they were big. I was on mushrooms....I had to leave the show for a bit...it was overwhelming.

First time I ever heard of Arcade Fire was when this was on Letterman. Everyone in the room watching with me was amazed and we all became fans of them

When I watch Letterman performances I always ask myself "I wonder what Paul Shaffer was thinking during this?" Suffice to say I am positive he was blown away. Letterman seemed to be as well.

Win Butler and Josh Deu began performing in Boston as Arcade Fire before moving to Montreal in 2001, recording the "2001 Demos" prior to their arrival in the city. The earliest Montreal-based incarnation of Arcade Fire began performing in the summer/fall of 2001, almost entirely in lofts and art galleries.

unbelievably intense, one of the best versions, although it has been shortened. The other version I really like is the one they play on Pinkpop

Looks like very different people come on scene to play music, but they play like real band and like one person

I believe the violinist Sarah Newfeld is from BC... Anyway, except for Will (the crazy drummer in this video) , I think they all lived an studied in Montréal. So it is correct to say that the band is from "french Canada".
Régine at the piano, is from Longueuil, just the other side of the "Fleuve St-Laurent" .
    Vive Montréal!!

The Butler brothers, were from Texas. They all pretty much got together while at university and stuff.

Perhaps every band should have some guy wandering about the stage with a drum.

Their passion is so passionate and intense. Intensely passionate. The attitude is compelling. Rock and Roll never sounded so strong, so profound. This, and Neil Gaiman's Blandman comic(s), show the sheep up for the pretenders they are.

Richard lost his glasses during the performance. Well, not too long after, he started wearing contacts when they were performing. It's probably more comfortable for him, too.

Canada has a lot of great musicians and bands, and in certain genres (especially 'Indie') Canada is a bit ahead. But that is beside the point. There is greatness everywhere..it's just that higher populations and more cities of opportunity yield a higher number of good and shitty musicians getting big enough for you to hear them. Can we please not start the Justin Bieber thing? Country borders don't really justify where good music comes from anyway, agree?

You have Justin Bieber too so...America has led to several great artists like The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Flaming Lips, The Stooges, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Pixies, Nirvana, R.E.M etc. Canada is responsible for great stuff like Arcade Fire and Neil Young but don't think Canada is ahead in music.

I think they had a show on Conan the night before or so.. and they had an equally impressive set there too. I had heard about them just a few weeks before.. they were literally playing high schools and small venues just weeks before that. They had an insanely meteoric rise.

I’ve always hated this bad but this song is decent and this is a great performance. The lyrics are pretty much worthless though
