I cannot help thinking that depicting the classification using a pyramid may be a bit misleading. Granted, DOC(G) works a bit like ISO certification in the industry, but similarily, some reputable companies provide far superior products/services without being bothered with ISO certification. But the purpo$e is clear - apart from quality (perhaps we could call it 'assurance pyramid'?) - it's always extra buck for the gov, and the DOC wars in the 60s were bloody. At the same time, there are IGT wines in Tuscany that can cost 500 EUR a bottle - and people are willing to pay it!
