Doesn't matter how many cars I've painted, laying the first bit of colour on a fresh build still gives me anxiety, but so much satisfaction. A job like that really brings out emotion as you see the endless hours come together. Great job team and a really well edited video. Cheers Howard
Thanks Damien, it is a stressful time.
Especially when it’s time to clear.. hands get shaky and it’s like ur first time all over again! Yes awesome job
Looking back' (way back) the most anxious i ever felt was doing a Jam job (the old spraying enamel 'single pack) if you got a run' it might cost you your job' or you had to wait a few month's for it to harden up enough to sand out and redo the paintjob.
@@barrycuda3769 haha, I wouldnt paint my wheelbarrow with that crap 😅
Did an hq ute in yellow with it once when I was a second year apprentice for a weekend cashy, never again! 🙈
@@damienhasleby8390yes' In my early stages I repainted a friend's hq ute in jam 'I was feeling really proud of it because it looked so good' we went and got a couple of celebratory beer's and when we came back there were runs everywhere 'we had to wipe it all off with rag's and thinners. A spray painter friend of mine once did a jam job in someone's backyard 'it turned out good 'he got paid' but the owner left his porch light on all night 'and when he looked at the car in the morning it was encrusted with moth's .
Thank you for your videos and sharing your years of knowledge with us. Means a lot to people like myself who've looked up to people like yourself for years.
My pleasure! It's been a blast so far.
Congrats Howard, another masterpiece. Great paintwork but we all know it's in the prep. Thumbs up to PPG for supporting.
Thanks Mark
Sincere congratulations Mr. Astill, a huge milestone.
How badly I wanna see a TS50 done that same beaut colour!
Thank you very much!
Another ripper episode…Bloody fantastic
Thanks Adam
I am primarily a motorcycle guy, but love these falcons and coupes, so cool to finally see some colour on this car!
Cheers mate, it’s always a turning point in the build
Thank you for allowing the rest of the street machine community to watch you build a car to this level of detail. You have solely giving me the inspiration I need to get back into my so far 18year build of my Xe Falcon I’ve never driven. The covers came off last week and have not gone back on this time😃
Also thanks for painting the inside of the doors
Cheers mate, good to hear your back into it
That colour is absolutely insane.. Looks beautiful all pieced together, epic work👌
Thanks a ton!
Did we expect anything less.
Absoulute Perfection.
Well done to the PPG team and to Howard all your prep work made this project outstanding. The finished product will be breathtaking.
Cheers mate, looking forward to doing the colour sanding and polishing
After working in panel shops I've always appreciated the patience that beaters and painters must have, amazing
It ok if your given the time. Too often it’s not the case
That colour is insane! It just shows how much effort is put into the car before hand for that finish
Yes it’s all about the prep
The car is coming along nicely I love the colour and it’s gonna be one awesome car when finished, finally we get to see a 4 door XC👍
Yes it’s shaping up good
That colour came out so much better than I imagined it would. Truely beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow. That’s truly amazing. The effort PPG put in is astonishing. Congratulations on the way it’s looking everyone. Can’t wait to see the next episode. Thanks H.

I've been looking forward to this episode for a long time. That colour, it just pops!! Wow. Well done Howard, Darren, John and the rest of the team at PPG. I think I am more excited seeing following the progress of the car than the owner is.
Good to hear Paul, but Peter is pretty happy with the colour.
Great video of the process. Stunning colour, and the clear is already a perfect off the gun finish so with flow coats it will be deep and mirror smooth. Looking forward to the next video.
Yes the next one will be good but still needs a colour sand and polish.
Getting close now guy’s, it’s starting to look the goods, can’t wait to see it in the flesh. Great job team!
Yes Craig, need to keep the momentum up now
Just wow. As a hack backyard spray painter and wanabe panel beater. That is just off the scale. The highest quality. I am amazed.
Cheers mate, this is the level of the top auto repairers
Another Summernats grand Champion in the making without a doubt......
Too early to make those calls.

After so many years it must be rewarding seeing it in it beautiful final colour which I must add is amazing. I feel privileged to see this level of work that you and so many others in this build have produced .
Great work and can't wait for the next vid.

Lovely job ! Very impressive setup at PPG,bit surprised to see Chris not wearing gloves when clear coating! Plenty of isocyanate in that stuff !
Yes, I’m sure it was the time pressure than a deliberate act.
Great Video Howard, really inspirational to see, and its amazing that you have such a good relationship with these PPG guys and can work so closely with them your projects, this car will be tops

That's what my wife said. lol
I think I can say your on the way back. Or very close to. All that preparation payed today. I haven’t forgotten the banging and the welding, the grinding, the filling, the sanding, the priming, panels on panels off and repeat. Great job. Ppg booth was impressive as expected.
Thanks, it is a drawn out process that is required. PPG centre is amazing

It has been a good partnership for a long time

That PPG setup is awesome, having a epic setup like that would be amazing to work in,
It certainly is a standout facility
Best example of ‘ the prep job is the paint job’ . I am also a PPG user🍻
Thanks mate😉
Absolutely gorgeous. All that hard work finally paying off. Can we maybe, if time allows, have a video sometime on how to properly protect the paint so it looks amazing for years to come? Thankyou everyone involved.
Yes mate, there are still 100’s of hours of sanding and polishing to come
Proud moment howard. Looks great mate. Beautiful colour
Thanks mate, definitely a turning point
I can't even think of how much this rebuild has cost so far but I know that I'll never have the money to make my "old" XBGS look that good , well done so far guys , you've done an "awesome" job of it up to this stage & I look forward to seeing it completed.
Thanks mate
That is one beautiful color on one beautiful car congades on where yous have come well done

Cheers Mick, little bit of cobalt too
Stunning Howard . See so easy rub bog paint anyone can do it right . Hope to see it in Perth one day .
Yes mate, just like icing a cake
@@AstillDesign big expensive cake
Great work Howard well done looks amazing mate..
It's like a child getting born Howard how beautiful does that colour look..
Very interesting in respect to the primer processes and what the techniques are with them..
That was very interesting in respect to silver and the rubbing showing through from underneath..
Cheers Scott, I will look at expanding on the tech side next episode
So great to see guys operating at this level and with that kind of efficiency, it would be great to nerd out a little more on spray pressures, fan size, spray distances, travel speed, overlap and spray volume
Really appreciate the content
Seems to be the main request so we will definitely be doing it.
Look at that straight of the gun, unreal!!
Yes it sure looks good. Now to sand it all again and polish with mothers
This is awesome Tech can't wait for more! Thank you!
Our pleasure

Wow mate you should be so proud of your self well done 👍👍👍
A great team effort
I gotta say I've seen a lot of high end paint jobs but this is absolutely top level. Well done Howard and thanks for sharing and explaining the process in so much detail. Kinda sad to see them sanding back all your hard work though haha. Looking forward to the next video 👍🏻
That’s ok, I get to sand their work now in the colour sanding process
Wow what a colour and how good did it lay down
Looked almost too good to polish ❤❤👍👍👍
Yeah first couple of coats were unreal. He has loaded it up for me to colour sand and polish.
Top quality work mate
Thank you! Cheers!
That fan of the gun and the coverage of that paint... Insane. Looks good in Satin finish without the clear (sorry Howard🤣)
Sure did look good Matt
very grateful that you shared this video
incredible workmanship and craftsmanship
color is super hot
trophy winning machine for sure
hope you do your single spinner ford custom
Cheers mate
Just wow. Thanks Howard
Yeah😍
It's been a while since I've added here, but what surprises me is that the car was painted outside first. Goes against what I as a DIYer would do. Could you get John to elaborate on the thought process for the painting stages. It's looking really amazing now.
We will be doing a process list in the next episode. The underside would normally be ready for paint before the outside but timelines did not allow. the underside is normally painted after as it will be satin finish. I can polish the outside but not the satin.
Great vid Howard 👌👍the car looks unreal ive been hanging to see some color layed down
Me too, now to get the rest of the body finished
@@AstillDesign true looking forward to the rest of the build 👍👍
Fantastic to see all that prepwork pay off! When you paint the engine bay can you elaborate on how you make up?
If you mean mask up I will do.
Wow….. that colour is amazing….
I love it!
That colour is going to Glem like an Opal Absolutely beautiful
It sure will
Bloody awesome nothing better than PPG shops!!
So true
@@AstillDesign not taking away from the long hours and nice job you have done but painting it at a PPG purpose built shop there’s no comparison
Job well done Howard to you and your team. Years of work culminating to an amazing result! Are you just as happy with the results?
Yes mate its looking good, still lots to do though
I take my hate off to you Howard, self taught and producing exceptional show cars.
I have had the pleasure of working with so many top tradesman that self taught is not entirely correct. Cheers Howard
Absolutely magnificent.
Thanks Peter
Wow looking the goods 👌👍 PPG are legend's
Thats for sure
Looking Great, what a great booth. I would have liked to see your face when they were blocking everything back after you already got all of your lines right, I hope you don't have to fix any lines that would be a shame. I'm curious as to your thoughts on this?🤔
Yes it was a very stressful day, I would normally block on the car. Came out OK. I have to block out the gallons of clear with 800 and work up to polish as I normally do.
@@AstillDesign 👍
It was great meeting you and seeing this car at MotorEx mate! Congratulations on your awards from the event!
I've heard from a few old-school people wet sanding can be used in the 400/800 grit stage just before putting the colour down, to help limit sanding scratches.
What are the pro/cons of wet VS dry sanding?
This is just a hobby of mine so I don't have much experience...
Hi, not an easy one to answer. The dry sanding done correctly will not leave scratches. The wet rubbing is introducing moisture to the paint process that is always going to be problematic. We will be doing more tech videos on the painting process starting in July.
@@AstillDesign thanks for the reply, look forward to seeing the series in July!
Fantastic work it looks amazing
Thanks Darren
That's beautiful!!
If you want a bracket painted that has some excellent runs in it, I'm your man.
Ross we all can claim that one
the blue looks similar to the blue coral colour john britten painted his bike with . out of curiosity what would a paint job of this level cost to have done without your body work . great vid as always
Good question! I really don't have an answer o0n cost or hours
Wow stunning. A credit to you and all those involved . Can't wait to see some of the bling go on
Few more weeks, have to get the engine bay and underside finished then it’s on
Love that colour. Will It be doing the show circuit? I would love to see it when it’s done in person because you can never fully appreciate it in a video. Great work as always.
It will get about, Summernats first
Those mirka Sanders are so good
They sure are
Goddamn, I'm a rust and matte black kinda dude but, Jesus, this looks amazing. Top job, top videos. You're a legend, as are all involved. Reckon I can have a drive when she's done???🤣🤣🤣
Sure thing, the line would be pretty long
