If a HD owner relied on just one source of good engineering information coupled with a cost / performance basis, Doc Harley is the stand-out engineer, thanks Doc from those who ride iron in the UK
Just bought a 2008 anniversary issue Springer 110 cubic inch CVO with 259e cams he's right it's a beast. The bike has 11,000 miles on it and they just installed the cams and all the stuff he just showed us and put it on the showroom. Have to break this motor in although it's used, for five hundred to a thousand miles at under 3500 RPM. After 35 miles an hour all this bike wants to do is go. It is a beast! I love it totally happy. Off the line, a stock bike will beat me every time, but after we get going you'll be sucking exhaust.
Thanks for the info Doc. I think I have changed my mind on cams. In the future when I can afford to purchase a new Touring bike I think that I will go with the power cam. Thanks again.
You're showing your age with the E Ticket comment. Keep these video's coming please. Since I've started Following you, I've learned more about my Bikes since I've started riding in the beginning of the 70's.
Thanks heaps Doc for all your info about the "Right" cam for MY bike and how I ride. I've been more into riding long distance's and sometimes toeing a trailer with all my camping gear. Thanks again, Teddy.
Hi Doc, just subscribed and have spent the last 2 hours watching. Great info sessions for beginners through to guys that have been riding and servicing for years. Keep them coming. Robbo Australia
That was very informative and clear I was going to go with the torque cam then I started adding all the extra stuff like the SE parts to my list like the springs the cam plate the oil pump now that I watch this video it seems I don't need to add all that stuff and save myself time and money thank you. Doc Harley
Good vid....had a 99 fatboy I was going to put a cam into but decided to trade up for a touring 12 Road King and now I am looking at upgrading the cam in this bike. I had to look at a lot of different places while researching for the 99 so it was nice to have a lot of good info in one spot for the RK as far as parts. But, I am looking at getting rid of the chain when I do this and the potential problematic chain tensioners in favor of gears. I believe S&S makes a whole kit with cams and gears, but going check out 255 looks like it will serve my purpose..thx.
Thanks, very smooth presentation. I believe at this stage 2 scenario. We should factor in probable cam tensioners (gear or hydro) and checking our camshaft runouts as an initial step. Finally, what point and or year/model might you suggest upgrading the Oil Pump / cam plate? Again thank you for the many many hours of information you provide. ☘🌵💲
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson yah! Thanx Doc... I was thinkin about my 2015 FLHR coming up on 20 K. I bought it last year with 1,500 miles. Riding in and out of Los Angeles has a few challenges... I changed my auto adjust tensioner with a Southern Oregon Hot Bikes HB 125 and and installed a fan assisted cooler, couldn't be happier. My original shoe was getting grooved down and cookin oil for someone serving up French fries. I just am nervous about the cam chain tensioners and want to know what crankcase runouts are Both sides, before I fathom any cam upgrade. FYI, I change all my oils (synthetic) on the average of 3,500 max. I want to ride this vibrator til they come and get me. Ok then just wanted unload my watch cap and see what you thought.
I love how you educate us and your up grade . But didn't hear anything about cam plate and oil pump replacement. So the question is do you need this up grade or not ?? Extra money well spent or not??
I balance that question every day. What do I Need or Want. Do I need a better oil pump?…2017, 18, 19….yes. Do I need a billet cam plate for a stock cam…no, unless your going for bullet proof or future upgrades. Is the billet plate and oil pump better? Yes. Is it necessary? Depends on you….Doc
Please look at this upgrade a complete package. You got the cams great 👍 the stock inner cam bearings are not designed for this. SE performance bearings are suggested. Then there is your original lifters. You can use them but putting old lifters with a new performance cam is not ideal for longevity. Is this cam you choose a bolt in cam with no valve spring update? And does the manufacturer allow your original solid push rods vs adjustable? I’m sure you already have a performance air cleaner and exhaust system so the dial piece is the dyno tune with your choice of tuner. All together this upgrade will be great…Doc
Thanks. For a bolt in cam, do I need to run a power commander or refresh my ECM. I have a 2003 road king with Rinehart slip on mufflers and high flow intake, remapped ECM with fuelpak.. Bikes runs good now, but is more tuning needed with bolt in cam?
Doc, I've done a Stage IV to my 2017 HD CVO SG 117, Without any problems on the travels I've done. Normal for me is HiWay/Turnpike cruising and I do push some on the speed. Looking at the work order from HD dealer tells me nothing of what cam is in it. But from the HD New Product write up page ( 47), tell me the kit includes SE8 -515 Cam. But tells me nothing of lift or duration. Could you please give me some advice on this, is this proper for my style of drive and type? Thank you, Mike, and I sincerely enjoy ALL the knowledge you share with us out here in UA-cam land.
Hey Doc, I would like to see a video on solid vs adjustable pushrods. I've heard a lot of talk about both, pro and con but trust your opinion more than some video on UA-cam, thanks
Doc, absolutely love your videos!👍 I have a 2018 Softail with Stage 1 and absolutely love the way it runs as I did use the Screaming Eagle tuner. As I have been building and riding mostly old shovels since high school, I haven't dug too deep into the computer age in Harleys although I am an electronic technician on a ship. Again I have built flywheels and up on many many shovels and evo's and own 5 shovels and 1 evo and now my 107 Milwaukee 8. (Father has had a Harley shop since 60s) I am wanting to go with torque cam and really like the many independent graphs on the Woods 22x. "But", I want to keep my same tuner and tune it for stage 2 and go. Surely it is close enough, no not as good as properly tuned but should be better than the Harley torque cam. What are your thoughts. And yes, warranty is over.
Gary thanks for taking the time to watch our videos and this e mail. Where was your family shop at? This is the time to do homework. Get the Harley-Davidson cam specs for Torque cam. Compare any other cam choice. The opening and closing of intake and exhaust must be close. The lift can be higher. The reason your choice must be close because the tuner you are using had only H-D ignition maps and you cannot change these much because the algorithm used was for HD cams. Fuel wise you might Max out using a non Harley-Davidson cam. HD put limits in there tuning software to keep H-D motors EPA compliant. (TTS would give you more parameters to tune outside Harley box) Opinion now: H-D cam is good. Other cams are better. Bob wood cams in the past delivered in 2 valve application. I think he is still using the same openings and closing numbers for 4 valve heads. This does not work. I suggest looking at Star Racing’s 30-30 cam or others. You can call George at Star and get great info. Another company to check out is Cycle-Rama out of Florida. I have used their 575 cam in Twin cams with great success. GMR performance out of Texas is trying some new cams that are producing good numbers but they usually change a lot of other components. Of coarse there are others, S&S, Red shift, Fueling etc. As I said do your homework. Ask questions. Look at reviews on Harley-Davidson forums.
Thanks very much for quickly replying. Am very happy with how she runs now and will probably keep studying as it will be January when weather is ar it's worst here in Northeast Louisiana. Just hate to spend so much on another tuner. And after years going behind the local shops in their repairs, surely wouldn't want any of then dyno tuning mine. You definitely have the right title "Doc" and appreciate your videos. God Bless!
OK Doc, how about a "geezer friendly" (EZ starts) cam for a Panhead? I've run both the FL and FL"H", Andrews A2 but would prefer a cam closer to a Sifton 468s type (no longer genuine)...thoughts....walt...tulsa,ok ...ps. I've got my heads set up for big lift should I desire....
I have ridden bikes with the upgrades and they run a little stronger than my 2012 Dyna with the 103 twin cam engine. But my bike gets 48-51 mpg on the open road at 70-75 mph. If I go slower like 55-60 mph, then I can get 55mpg. That's impossible with a bunch of performance upgrades.
If a HD owner relied on just one source of good engineering information coupled with a cost / performance basis, Doc Harley is the stand-out engineer, thanks Doc from those who ride iron in the UK

One of the better explanations on the difference between cams! Much appreciated!
Thanks Doc! You’re great at breaking things down and making it easy to understand.

THANKS DOC
Really appreciated thanks.
Well done! Very informative. 👍👍

It cost a small fortune but I had the 259e cams installed in my 2010 Heritage. I already had the Screaming Eagle orange tuner.

Your questions have a lot to do with year of bike and weather staying completely stock or entering into the world of performance….Doc

I'm just curious about what cam came in a 2010 road glide custom screaming eagle?
I'm getting mr103's for my heritage. 96b upgrade any upgrades that I will have to do. Expensewise I hope not.

Remapping is required
Yes, and it's quite easy because you can choose your cam in FP3.

hi, Do we need a tuner for bolt on cams?
YES…..Doc
would like to know what difference the woods 555 cam would bring as apposed to the 255 cam ? thnx
Why remove the head
Put air pressure to hold the valves up
Many are giving up $$$ to be able to do this procedure as you suggest. I can’t afford this tool at this time….Doc

Where is the S&S catalog or are you just pushing lackluster harley parts?
I disagree with trying to get more out of something that was engineered for a certain level
Y'all wonder why you rip up something else
Ever wonder why Harley does not make this way in the first place?
EPA
so you can go to your dealer and spend more money
He just explained that in choosing your cams for your riding style
So you suggest that car manufacturers should only create sport cars? Because that''s the fastest. Think, please.
Hey Doc! Just how good are the 255 cams? I'm thinking stage II for my 2012 Ultra Limited...
