    UXWBill Code of Computer Usage:
    >Real computers have floppy drives
    >Real computers use PS/2 ports
If this doesn't happen, you might find yourself with an IBM PS/2 hitting you in the head, and if that happens to be a Model 95 server, I don't envy you!

LOL, the fan issue was amusing, as well as the optical mouse.
I remember when I felt the same way after getting my first optical mouse, the original Intellimouse Explorer. I still use it on my computer at work. Though it can't track rapid motion as well as newer mice, it still feels great in my hand, and has the forward/back buttons exactly where I like them.

I think I know the reason why the Yahoo logo didn't load. Based on the tab design, you're using Firefox with a browser plugin "NoScript" that prevented the logo from showing up on the Yahoo page.

I've always had a soft-spot for these early-mid 2000s Dell machines. I almost bought a Dimension 8300 back in the summer of 2003 but wound up going with a Dimension 2350 because it was more budget friendly and I still have that same machine to this day. Hard to believe it may have been the fan causing those problems in your system all these years (I watched your original video on it back in 2010).

Same here, those were really good machines, and I'm glad to say I have a few variations, the 8200 using rambus memory is a nice one to have handy. I'm glad that you fixed that system, just sorry that it took so long to figure out what exactly went wrong, a defective fan never crossed my mind. as usually I don't have fan issues unless they crap out, (And I have a box full of salvaged case and PSU fans just in case lol)

Heh. I bought a 2400 back in 2003 myself. Still working now, though it doesn't see much action. I, too, would never had guessed that it was the CPU fan causing all those problems for that long. I have an 8300 myself and, after upgrading it with 2GB of RAM, a 320GB Seagate SATA HDD, and an FX5950 Ultra, on top of its factory 2.8GHz P4HT Northwood, I'd argue that it's faster than my main rig. Seriously, that 8300 FLIES.

It just so happens that server has an AHA-2940 SCSI card, too, like your system!

I need to fiddle with my 4300. It's got a real slow P4 1.4GHz (I believe) CPU in it, and it could do with an upgrade. I think it's even bottlenecking my FX5300 GPU (which has a horrendous fan on it but after a little while the noise subsides). It ain't no UA-cam machine but it gets my old games going at least.
Now to get my SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64 card working in DOS (It did before, it doesn't now), that would be kick-ass.

  • @yorgle11

The fan power circuitry in that board is obviously very robust. As much as some people knock Dells, I've always found them to have quality parts in them. Better quality than some of the parts enthusiasts put in home-built machines, honestly.
It must be gratifying to finally solve this mystery after so long, but frustrating that you didn't get to enjoy this computer at it's best when it was new.
A few months ago I was working on an Epox dual slot-1 board which I had bought used with CPUs included.
I failed to realize one of the CPU fans had seized, and had already killed one of the fan headers. When I first tested the board, I put that CPU on the opposite socket, thus killing the other header. Great - 2 dead fan headers.
Investigation revealed that the transistors on those headers were only rated for a pitiful amount of current - something like 0.12A or thereabouts. They didn't even meet the max amperage rating on the CPU fans, which were nothing special themselves. When that fan seized up, it killed them. I wonder how much money Epox saved on those.
I ended up replacing all 3 fan transistors with parts rated for ~2A (the cost was low, so why not). I have no idea how much current I can expect the motherboard's traces to handle though, so I'd be afraid to ever push them near that far.

Bill, your Dell being sidelined by a simple case fan really reinforces the old adage to check all the obvious solutions first. I had a recent scare thinking my monitor was broken. I was cleaning my desk and discovered the individual switch for the monitor was in the off position! It is a two power strip set-up, with one power strip being one of those old style monitor stands with individual switches. Did you put back the faster CPU on your Dell since you now have a good fan on it?

My wife has/had a Dell E310 from around 2006 or so, and hers did that same fan speed throttle you were talking about in its later years. So now you have me wondering if her fan was on it's way out as well. Hmmm.

    • @KLM817
      @KLM817 9 років тому

I agree. The thing always was packed with dust. The second to last time I cleaned the fan, grill and heatsink is when airplane mode kicked in. We finally replaced the Dell in 2012 with a Asus with Windows 8.

Bill, I hope you are aware that mice, especially optical mice, don't work until Windows starts to load. (Hence why your optical mouse didn't light up until Windows got to the loading screen) Sometimes the mice won't work until Windows gets to the logon screen, therefore having to wait a few minutes until Windows installs the correct drivers in the background. This can happen other things too, such as keyboards.

A neighbour used to have a clamshell system, i had to replace the dvd drive as the old one became allergic to disks, i was happy to swapout the old drive for him.
I really liked the blue plastic sliders screwed to the sides of the dvd rom, it slid out so nicely and once transfered to the new victim... err dvd drive it went in a treat :-).
I dont know what type of dell it was, the old man passed away a few years ago at 85, and his machine was carried away by his family, never to be seen again, it was a nice machine that behaved itself really well :-).

My question. At the 16:08 time mark, I notice a Dell machine to the left of your keyboard, I can't tell if that's a printer, or some sort of SAS/SATA external enclosure.
My response to your Yahoo riddle? The time and date weren't set, and the Yahoo logo couldn't load to your timezone/time?

The reason why the Yahoo! Logo didn't show up is because it requires the RTC to be set to the correct date and time in order for it to show up. If the clock is back 6+ years, the Yahoo! Logo doesn't show up, or if the clock is set to a different time, including the date on the clock, the same thing happens. Bing (Microsoft), Google, Apple, and Yahoo! requires that your RTC is set to your time zone's date and time for their logos to show up, including famous peoples' birthdays (presidents, inventors, artist, etc.), your birthday (Google Minus is required), and events, such as holidays.

My 8300 won't turn on... I dont know what it is the problem, Power supply is ok, cables seems to be ok just unplugg evertyhing and replug in. Same light led is ON when Power supply is plugged to the board. Maybe the power button at front is messing around but he's just too damn hide in the chasis no way to acces to that. I didn't see some jumper to power on board. I just spray some alcohol and air to clean the button and i get nothing from that. Any suggestion?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  2 місяці тому

Some diagnosis will be required. The front panel button probably isn't the problem.
How did you test the power supply? Dell used good quality, underrated power supplies in these, but the youngest examples are now at least twenty years old. Make a note of where all the wires from the power supply are plugged in. Disconnect them. Not all will be plugged in, which is fine. Find the big connector that was plugged into the motherboard. With the power supply connected to an outlet that you know to work, take a paper clip and short between the green wire in the large connector and one of the black wires. (There is no danger in doing this.) While not a complete test, if the power supply fan runs, it's probably good. Remove the paper clip from the two wires.
If you need a new one, the power supply is a standard ATX type. (Older Dell systems used nonstandard power wiring, but this is not one of them. However, the lack of an opening in the case for the on/off switch that many computer supplies have can make life interesting.) Buy a good quality power supply from a reputable maker, of at least 400 watts capacity. If you have to modify the case, take *everything* out of it first and clean up any metal filings *very* thoroughly!
Should the power supply check out, reconnect the wiring exactly as it was. It's time to simplify the system configuration. Remove every expansion card except the video card. Remove every memory module except for one. Disconnect any disk drives from the motherboard. Try powering on the system. If it now works, add one device at a time until it doesn't.
If the computer keeps working after everything is back in place, you've just found out that sometimes after many years, electrical contacts need to be reseated.
If you find damaged components on something, some are repairable and others not. Your Dimension 8300 was manufactured during a time when capacitors were made using a defective formula. Many of them later failed. It's been my experience that this usually won't cause the Dimension 8300 to stop working entirely, but it may become unstable. Capacitors are cheap and can be replaced, though soldering is required and it's not a job I'd recommend if you're new to soldering.

I've always just seen computers in terms of its components. What's its CPU, GPU, RAM? It seems strange to ask, does a Dell 8300 have good performance? It seems more to the point to ask, is the Intel C2D 6600 fast? Or whatever chip is in it...

You said you can solve just about any computer problem that anyone comes up with.
    I have a problem.
I've got a friend who has a Dell Dimension 8100.
Recently i popped the case (just to have a look inside) and accidentally knocked the snap in fan loose. I didn't unplug it. Once i put it back in place and booted the computer up there was nothing on the screen. I don't think the fan incident had anything to to with nothing being on the display but i'm not sure so that's why i brought it up.
Anyway when i power on the computer.
-The CD drive makes a noise
    -The hard drive spins up.
-You can hear the Windows startup sound but there is nothing on the display.
    I have tried:
    -3 Different monitors
    -Different power cables
    -Re-seating the RAM
Nothing works. Could the Graphics card be bad? It is an nVidia.
I know the computer is operational too.
Since there was nothing on the screen i pressed the start key then S for shutdown, the enter and the computer powered off. So i know it's a hardware problem not a software problem.
I don't know where or how to begin troubleshooting so i need help.

      The mouse works.
The Graphics card is not part of the motherboard. It is a separate and is located towards the bottom of the PC.

At my school there is an IBM Thinkcentre with a Pentium 4 and 80Gb hard drive. I could collect more information if needed. Anyway, one day when I powered it on, it boots like normal, while freezing at the BIOS screen. I'm guessing it's because the hard drive is dead and holding back POST. The reason why I think it's dead is that the hard drive light illuminates before the BIOS screen even comes, but it doesn't actually spin up. It won't get far enough into POST to activate the floppy drive, justified by not illuminating the floppy indicator at POST, or the keyboard, because the various "Lock" keys' lights don't do anything. Basically, it boots up, activates the cd drive and the hard drive light, and freezes at the BIOS screen. It will stay there for at least a couple hours. There are no evident errors, not even a beep code. Any ideas?

Hey uxwbill I have a quick question I was given a dell dimension 8300 from somebody and the computer is complains about a low voltage battery on startup so I replaced the cr3032 battery but the message still pops up saying there is a low voltage battery I read on a old dell fourm that it might be a fault with the 2003 era systems but it also has a few bad caps in the same place where you had bad caps on the video about replacing dell dimension 8300 caps if you can help be at all with this it would be a big help and by the way the system also loses time when unplugged even with the new battery and I also trying bending the prong that holds the battery to see if it could get a better connection but that did not help

Before giving up hope on the board, check the password reset or CMOS clear jumpers. People have been known to leave them set. Beyond that, there probably isn't much hope. Good working Dimension 8300 systems and motherboards are still plentiful enough that you might as well replace it if you want one, especially if bad capacitors are not the only problem.
I recapped a Dim8300 only for the challenge and experience. These days I'd really have to think about repairing anything based on a Netburst CPU, if that was all it supported.

The problem I always saw with these mid-2000s Dells was extremely poor disk performance. The hard drive transfer speed would degrade over time because the IDE driver kept a lifetime count of errors and would keep downgrading the transfer rate until the hard drives were running in PIO mode and booting took 10 minutes.

I have a dimension 4700 witch I don't use any more and the graphics was bad on vga or dvi and I tested on several different monitors and did not perform any better. And I scraped it. Windows vista ( aka crap) was on the machine. I should have left it windows xp. But I found sata and put a new hard drive in it a wd caviar blue 320 gb. And loaded 98 then that was not a upgrade and download 7 and worked perfectly. Then a Emachines died and I put the 120 gb as well in it. It started crapping up on me and the graphics started messing up so I put it out of service and considering how much money I put into it. So I dragged out a windows 7 Emachines but I had one problem and it was very slow. Then I got a Dell inprion 3847 and it was so darn fast and I got it 2 months ago. I will get out them in summer when the Dell dimension sits in summer heat or winter cold. So it shouldn't have acted up in 2014 in summer so that's what it gets.
