Why do you have to pass a law to ban something that's already illegal? The most absurd thing I have ever heard. Just enforce the current laws. Stupidity at it's finest.
Thank you. WTF is wrong with these politicians??
Posession of drugs in oregon is not illegal, they actually legalized posession of heroin a few years back. Now their liberal policies are destroying the state
They were able to do drugs on the streets legally. Now they took that away. Thank God!
It double secret probation !
Having a small amount is legal in Oregon.
The real question is how are they enforcing it? They banned camping and that went well....
They are waiting til Portland voters vote in a state proposition to allow them to enforce it.
There are no cops available.
@@phil562 Oh really? Last time I was downtown about a dozen cops were standing around doing nothing, after another person overdosed. There were two huge fire-trucks there, and an ambulance too, all for one overdose, which happens daily - often several times. The waste of resources is mind-boggling, idiots are running this place?!
The difference is that camping is all about intent...
now pass a resolution on incompetent 'leadership' followed by a plan to streamline recalls.
About time. Now to actually enforce these laws...
Do you mean the same laws that aren’t forced on people of power or who have political power or the rich. Look @ Trump he broke so many laws & he is free. We have a two tier justice system
Looks like it's about 5 years too late. Better late than never
With who? Drug interrupters? Don’t say police, don’t say it
Just visited Portland and stayed in the downtown area. There is virtually nobody walking the streets after the sun goes down and it does not feel safe unfortunately. I think this is one step in the right direction.
and many of those folks who are walking about are simply tourists who don't know any better...
In the right direction? Don’t wait around to see how the police don’t enforce it, and judges practice release, no bail.
They are just pretending to do something doing drugs in public was already illegal this is just a look at me move
Actually the first step sadly would be vote in some republicans.
They waited so long that addicts flocked to Portland in big numbers. The state should act quickly to allow this to be effective while their are still options for the not to be arrested - like San Franciso.
Step 1 pass a law. Step 2 ENFORCE THE LAW!
Enforcement requires having representatives that actually hold the right values and have a backbone. Wheeler and most of the Portland GOV definitely does not meet those standards.
Step 3 I AM THE LAW!
@@cakesnipher7024 So you're saying you'll stand up and protect those who can't protect themselves? You'll get tired really quick.
It's been a law
Well, it's a start.
Finally a step in the right direction.
Now go for the throat and stop the fentanyl that's fueling this madness. Made in China brought through the border ....failed policy is on purpose.
how so? It simply prohibits 'open' drug usage so now bums will turn their backs or simply dodge into a doorway...
Our doorways…..
Wow. Those city council people are geniuses to figure this out.🎉
About as smart as the folks who vote for them.
I prefer a ban on the mayor and the city council! Elect leader's that prefer to do the job they were hired to do! Current leader's talk and nothing will improve! Run Mike Shmidt out of the city!
I have a friend whom I just saw at a wedding that is high up in a very large company out of Portland. She moved all their employees/offices out of the city awhile ago. But they were recently scheduling a meeting/conference and she was telling all the people that were coming from out of town that they weren't going to hold it in Portland and all the people were disappointed and telling her that they wanted to have it there and have 'fun' in downtown... So she went down there and took some videos and then sent them off to them so they could understand what she was talking about. They were like "Okay, now we get it, no we definitely do not want to be there." It's hard for people out of state to grasp how the government here is literally running this state into the ground. I am from the East Coast and have been out here for 20 years. It is incredulous to me how people will just 'dance' around the issues and the truth and never come out and say what the issues are and take ownership of the problems. They just talk, talk, talk, have meetings, meetings, meetings, get given millions and millions of dollars and still "DO NOTHING".
Yep. From midwest here. Lived in PDX for a decade +. Can confirm the fancy verbal footwork to avoid saying anything.
Honestly both are right. You shouldn't go to prison over weed, but you also shouldn't be smoking fentanyl out on the street or anywhere for that matter lol
Weed is already perfectly legal in Oregon. Europe also doesnt have this same problem anywhere, they have homeless people but none of them are doing drugs constantly and few are even seriously mentally ill.
@@TheUnchosenOneit's illegal no matter what state says its legal
To explain to people who haven’t lived in Oregon, around I believe 2019-2020 they sent out voting pamphlets for residents of the state and one of the laws listed for a vote was to legalize the use and possession of hard drugs under a certain amount. So basically if your caught with less then a gram of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc it is just a slap on the wrist. Basically it’s a ticket. They did it to themselves. Drugs are basically Legal in Oregon.
That was for possession and use in private not openly in the public read the actual law
@@Dgafsranger So how’s a drug addicted homeless person gonna hide there drug use? In a tent sure but there still on the sidewalk or street. That law set the path to come by allowing people to become drug addicted zombies who can’t hold a job down and then end up on the street and not in a private home or dwelling because there homeless junkies now. Oregons a good state on the east side but on the west just like california it’s a junkies paradise.
I love seeing democrat policy’s in actions. Shows how rich and out of touch they are with the streets.
@@Dgafsrangerwhat’s the difference? Legal is legal. And clearly if it was already illegal. Why did they just pass this law???
@@Dgafsrangerclearly you don't know 💩 because there's plenty of open use on videos all over the internet showing portlanders using for a couple years and the cops don't do 💩 because it's literally a ticket
Do you know what provides incentives to get treatment? Jail. The DA needs to grow a pair and start doing his job and not rely on his views about what crime and punishment should look like.
Yep. I'd call PDX The City That Needs to Grow a Pair.
How are they supposed to enforce this? 😂
ain't gonna, it's merely virtue signaling...
Exactly
Well they enforced it in Florida. It's against the law to drink alcohol or to smoke pot in public, or in the park or in your car. Public intoxication is illegal even if you're not driving. It's an easy law to enforce. DUI driving under the influence, Bui boating under the influence, and simply public intoxication.
@@edwardroche2480 yea but the homeless guy who can whip out a crack pipe, steam it right in front of a child and go about his business probably about an hour before anyone with any authority can get there to put a stop to it. Just expecting the derelicts to abide by the “Ban” is ridiculous
@@caseD5150 well it works where I live and we've got lots of derelict and they don't do no drugs or drinking even in public. We have a very nice police force who hasn't killed anybody accidentally or on purpose. I think the police have only shot one person who died and a lot of years I can't remember exact dates but when it's a law people abide by it, if they don't they go to jail, plainclothes police officers will get the crackheads smoking on your street.
It's about time!
They already have laws in place. They don't need more that will also go unenforced.
30 years late...that's what happens when common sense is replaced by Wokeness and coddling Crimmals.
They are only trying to make it look like they're doing something... The judges in that city will still release them the same day....
Let the drug users over dose.
They don't want help.
And they aren't putting money into.
@@cocoa88 If only you understood the Bible as well as you think you do. These people are choosing to put poison into their bodies. I am sure, you are one that thinks people that smoke cigarettes deserve cancer. So be careful where you point that finger.
And that fixes absolutely nothing. For every addict that dies, 100 more will get addicted. Deal with the problems, not your petty emotions or your own need for attention.
@@crinklecut3790 Well said.
Users must donate their organs and not receive any medical attention. Choices have consequences. Compassion is the cause not the cure.
If people see a net... they're going to be more likely to jump
Now enforce it, then arrest the user, process them and release them to use in the open again. 😂🤣😂
How is Wheeler still the mayor ???? WOW just WOW.
"Back to the way it used to be". Seriously? Weren't all these council members decrying the way it used to be just a year or two ago? Had to introduce "sweeping" changes. Wanted to "change the narrative of society". Besides, how many laws (already on the books) aren't enforced now?
Wait so you’re telling me people don’t want to see people shooting up heroin while you take the kids to the park? Who would have thought
Here’s a thought. Be very strict with enforcing the ban. Instant arrest and charges. If found guilty instead of tax payers funding prison time. It’s a rehabilitation sentence. If they get out and get convicted again, then it’s prison.
Straight to prison! And we stop responding to overdose calls!
He said they over dose multiple times a day not just one.. that’s heavy…
Sadly, Portland has a very very long way to go to get back to the level of decency that would make it a place worth visiting! The lack of wisdom and discernment among the city officials is what turned Portland into the disgrace it is today. 😢
Elections have consequences
the words widon and vison are hardly synonymous with 'any' leftist -- it's all about 'feel'...
Don’t forget to blame the VOTERS. Measure 110 passed in 2020 & it’s all downhill.
Any time that city passes something like this unanimously..... You can pretty much consider it useless.......
I saw a porcupine downtown.. turned out it was a stray cat covered in used needles... Keep Portland Weird
I don't imagine the $500 fine will be much of a deterrent. A choice between jail or rehab might give them an opportunity to change if they're ready, or at least make the city a bit safer for everyone else.
Forced rehab doesn't work well
@@US2A lol yeah I know that from experience. But people repeatedly using out in the open and making things unsafe for everyone else makes it a more complicated situation.
@@normandcass1113 vegas they have signs all over saying it's not legal to smoke in public but the hotels etc stink
This is laughable. As if some words on paper will make this problem go away. It's ingrained into your society now. The laws have to change, yes, but so do the police, the prosecutors, and courts. Also, the crazy people that defend this behavior. It's going to be a long battle.
This is akin to a remember when they banned camping 😂
Well they finally hit their breaking point.
Its almost like one side cant even imagine what their actions will do in weeks/months/years
down the road. No awareness at all
If they do drug on the street they should be arrested immediately for public intoxication. We have a law concerning Alcohol Tobacco and drugs in Florida. You don't do it in park you don't do it in your car and you don't do it in public.
Kudos to the man speaking his mind about what he thinks a solution is. That being said, you can't force someone into rehab, they have to want it and some people NEVER do want it. I'm speaking from experience, not only did I escape addiction, I had to bury many loved ones that didn't. Throwing resources at the problem wont solve it. All that will do is enable users and breed corruption.
Couldn't have said it better.
Multnomah County will hold them for 1-3 days, then let them back out. Catch and release at its finest.
Not going to make any difference. These people simply have to be removed from the streets.
The taxpayers pay taxes for public spaces that can be used in a variety of ways.
Doing drugs and plopping down a structure are not uses the public was asked to pay for.
Correction ...Removed from the country ! ....
@@DavidVanHelden1 they need to go where it’s cheaper to live.
And we need to stop making it just expensive to hire people outside of urban areas as it is in cities. We’re literally blocking employment for LEGAL unskilled labor.
I live in California and when I compare the two states Portland used to be a jewel. Now, it's like the hunger games up there just like us.
I was there in 2017 before they decriminalized the possession of small amounts and still seen wide open use and needles all over the ground in the city😢
This reminds me so much of Neville Chamberlain trying to stop Hitler going into Poland when they've already given up Austria and Czechoslovakia. Too little, too late.
Amazing, never could have imagined such an outcome NOT!
Well, 6 months in jail will definitely get them off the streets and detoxing in jail. Maybe they will get addiction treatment while in custody. There should also be a stepped punishment, 1st time = 6 months, 2nd time = 1 year, 3rd time = 3+ years. They can only pay for their drugs if they’re doing crimes, so once they’re incarcerated it’s 1 less person committing crimes against the public.
In order for that to work Portland needs to back it's police force.
@@manwithabrain …..ahhhhhh, must have wannabe socialists in power in Portland? Well, it is named Portland, so De Port ‘em.
Okay -- but don't they need to hire back all the police officers they let go? You know that'll never happen.
Thanks Kate Brown for all the awful mess you left behind in what used to be an amazing and fun town 😤.
People have been abusing the drugs, in Honolulu the whole main Avenue “Moana” smells like Pot, just disgusting. it’s insane to see people smoking Pot while they are walking in that beautiful avenue 😤
ITS NEVER GOING TO GO BACK TO "WHAT IT USED TO BE". Thank you Democrats
Exactly! I'm sure there were those who watched Detroit fall apart and spent the rest of their lives wishing the same thing. Portland is dead. It's never coming back.
Wonderful guy my respects foy you god bless you and your familly
Finally! Now the only question will be is to ENFORCE it!
Oh no another Law..that will fix the problem right ?
And they said brain cells can't grow back
Years of enabling simply does not disappear with the stroke of a pen.
Omg this is hilarious....I'm sure there will not only be arrests but also prosecutions 😂😂 good luck
Higher stiffer fines, if out of control , put them somewhere to dry out ! A month should do some good to drug users .
Lol yeah but the DA has to actually file charges
Now put them in jail for 6 months / offense. They can get clean that way :)
Its going to have zero effect addicts care not about fines and jail time
They could have saved themselves a lot of time and trouble if they would have used common sense (which is not so common among radical democrats) years ago when confronted with the drug problems. O yeah, they thought it was so cool (and still do on some issues) to try to see how perverse and destructive they could be in opposing good, moral behavior. Something finally backfired on them.
Feel Good Measures with no Enforcement to kick the can down the road so the homeless money laundering scam can still go on uninterrupted.
Right. If you think this will change the tide, use you brain. It is like the laws against robbery, shoplifting, street racing, fire a gun in the city limit, they are just suggestions like "please don't do that" without real enforcement and prosecutions. Write them a citation and the fine will never be paid. How do you write a citation to someone that are "unhoused" or "experiencing homelessness"?
And what are they going to do to enforce it?
Yeah the problem is they need more police to ENFORCE it
These days drug addicts have zero respect for their community. I used to use all kinds of drugs, got clean years ago (Hooper Detox). Back in the day we tried to hide our drug use best we could, the thought of smoking or shooting drugs in front of regular people out in public was unimaginable, partly because of the consequences of getting caught, but mainly because of the shame of being a disgusting human ( yep that was me). The consequences are now gone (this new law will do nothing) and there seems to be zero shame. This city is lost and will likely never come back to its former glory. Ultra liberalism enabling people to behave like absolute animals. Breaks my heart, born and raised here and trying desperately to leave.
As an addict you would know that the addiction is hard to overcome for anyone, even harder for people without a home. .Dont bring politics in.
@@olecamohatmcgilicudy4256if they live they live, so let the games begin. Let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floooooooooorrrrrrrrr
100 % Correct along with many large cities in every State.
Shut up druggie
That Fireman told some hard truths, I think they are fed up and have decided to toss them in Jail for six months and a bus ticket home at the end. No one living on the street has 500$ to pay a fine with, so it's six months. The EMS know who the chronic people are, some coordination with the Courts and they can get them off the streets by their second OD of the day. When you are telling EMS to pissoff after they helped you maybe going through withdrawal in Jail might be what you need.
You are right about the past. Drugs were glorified but not advertized. And they did not turn healthy 20 somethings into zombies, the whole thing empty eyes zero morals bad skin malicious intent in every action. they are Ghoul manufactures.
About time! I used to love Oregon, snowboarding, kayaking.....but not its sucks so so bad.
i can’t believe it was EVER ok 😊
Drugs and stealing should be illegal.. Make Portland great again! 😂
How much more resources do they need? It seems ‘resources’ have been thrown at addicts forever. These resources have made a lot of people a LOT of money with little if no improvement. If someone wants help they will seek it out. It’s only then they’ll get sober.
Its about time.
Great! Now let’s do something regarding homeless camps
Provide this provide that, why should anyone pay to provide you these things?
Thank You
Now that good citizens who have been a part of your community and businesses who have paid thousands in taxes and were the draw for people to visit are FLEEING!!--
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COLLAPSE OF YOUR CITY!!
Next up: murder in public ban!
Good idea.
But unfortunately it’s a law and those can’t be enforced anymore.
Try rubbing a magic lamp 🪔 instead.
When being woke goes wrong 😂
I’m certain you can’t walk around drunk, so why doesn’t apply to drug addicts.
Bro I almost had a stroke reading that title 😂😂
Well that will fix everything. These free loader addicts need to get into addiction help and off the streets.
"Look. We are pretending to care now. Keep voting for us."
I’m from St Augustine Florida and open use drug use has always been illegal in my city.
This should have been done long ago
$500 fine or 6 months in jail. How's that been working out ?
Who would have thought...
Wow WHO WOULDA THUNK this was a TERRIBLE idea?!?
Gonna take more than that to fix the disaster it has become. Portland should be a shining star of a city but instead it is what it is. Politicians and people who voted for this are to blame. The beautiful Columbia, Mt. Hood, the coast...you've got it all and let it become trashed. Clean it up.
Good luck with that !
Good! Clean that city up!!!🤨🫡
What you mean drugs are illegal? Who would have thought.
It only took the death of what Portland was before they realize this was a bad idea long ago.
I hope this works because I miss what Portland used to be.
"Persuade people to go to treatment". I agree, stop saving them with narcan, stop giving them free everything. They need to hit rock bottom before they'll get help.
So, just pitch a tent, do it in the tent, and nothing changes
Not enough
The government you elect is the government you deserve-Thomas Jefferson
Now they have to enforce the law or it won’t change… what will follow once they violate the ban.. That’s where the rubber has to meet the road or they more than likely will not succeed.
Blah blah blah they won't do a damn thing to enforce.
**Nancy Pelosi Stated, “We are all Socialists now” How is that American style socialism\communism working for everyone?
They wont get sent to jail… there is no room in the jails, nor is there any rehabilitation for addicts in the prisons in Oregon.
Back in my day over doses killed you, now you can od multiple times a day ? Is it really a od at that point ?
OMG.... FINALLY......DANG
Translation = we rang that bell and now we are desperatey trying to un-ring it. No chance, CYA.
First of all addiction has been a problem for years Portland just allowed it to be done in public that’s where the city went wrong
There are some things that you just got to do in private even if they are legal. Drugs have got to be one of them.
*ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE... illegal, illegal drugs are illegal. How is the "new" legislation going to be any different than what has been on the books?
