Agree 100%. Everybody knows Madonna's a talented singer, but Michelle Pfeiffer has amazing vocal pipes as well. And it's not often that she gets to sing in many of her films, She did her own singing sang in GREASE 2, FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, HAIRSPRAY, & THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. She backed out of EVITA after it was decided to shoot on location in Argentina as opposed to a Hollywood lot as originally planned..
Sorry, I know that she is an actress, not a professional singer...but god...she sings like everyone who has once in her life been in a school choire ! Madonna was the perfect choice. Michelle sings flat and with ultra-minimal emotion. I don`t believe a word she is singing for this is one of the most sensual songs ever written in the history of music...
Madonna should have won an oscar for Evita. She was perfect. But I am pretty impressed with Michelle Pfeiffer's voice here and she certainly would have looked good in the role. I can't imagine Meryl Streep playing it at all - despite being so incredible in Mama Mia!
Madonna succeeded in the role for more than one reason. Her background and life partially parallelled Evita, Madonna had the better voice and also had 'the look', she also totally researched everything she could. It was also due to HER that they got the Casa Rosada in the first place. It was Madonna who spoke to people in Argentina who were against the film, she proved to them it would be a respectful production. The Peronists did not want the film made. Madonna GOT IT MADE. She was the ideal person for the role. She deserved the Oscar, but the song You must love me, got an Oscar, Madonna got a Golden Globe.
Michelle sang it on a higher key, and she sang it quite nicely. I can't imagine anyone else singing "You Must Love Me" as brilliantly as Madonna though. I love both Madonna and Michelle. I think they should've done "Chicago" together! that would've been great!
I love Michelle but I think that no other woman on this planet could be Evita like Madonna could. Madonna and her perfect fragile voice that hits you right to your heart, her unique star quality and her enormous worldwide fame, attitude, career and persona made the perfect movie Evita.
I don't mind the key changing at all because they find keys in which her natural tone sounds best, which in turn really makes it sound incredible. Actually I always wished that in musical theatre the musical directors would always change keys to make the songs sound better with different musicians and singers. It's a shame they don't.
You can hear her singing chops better in the Fabulous Baker Boys, because it's raw. Hairspray and Grease 2 both have a lot of additional things to help her voice. She's amazing in all, but brilliant in Fabulous Baker Boys.
I think its ridiculous to state that Michelle Pfeiffer would not have been a choice for the part, obviously she can sing, she isn't a belter like Patti Lupone is, but few singers are. She can act, and its evident that can act a song just as well as sing it
@MrsWillShakes13 Ken Russell wanted to film EVITA in the very early 80s with Liza Minelli. I would've loved to see that version, but I think Madonna was incredible in the 90s film.
Michelle is a great actress, so there is only a demo, it's not the finished song. She would do the role beautifully, she received an Oscar nomination for The Fabulous Baker Boys where she sings the whole movie and where she also lives a prostitute. Remember that Michelle left the project because her son had just been born, she would accept if he could do to reconcile the two, as the project left Los Angeles and went to Argentina, she saw that moment would not be possible for her be months away from home with a newborn.
thanks for posting this, but lets not forget how much the music was changed for madonna, don't get me wrong, madonna was great in the film but it was "evita light" and she needed this movie to save her career after the whole sex phase she went through. as far as i'm concerned no matter the key it's in, EVITA is one of the best stage to film versions in a long time. sorry to those who don't agree, viva madonna!!!! and long may EVITA be seen as a stage show
Michelle Pfeifer has got a very good voice (even though sometimes she goes a bit over the top)... I'm impressed. However, Madonna was simply perfect! She may not have a wonderful voice, but the emotion she puts in every word makes it up. And, hell, her singing lessons paid off. Madonna's voice is very good in the film. And even when she did "You must love me" live, it was amazing.
no matter how much you hate on Madonna...or how they had to change this and that..blah blah blah...she won a golden globe for it...and i thought she did a wonderful job
Part 2.. It's even been said that she was the original choice of the female lead in MAMMA MIA!, before Meryl Streep ultimately got the role instead. This, to me, is a true honor to how talented a singer Michelle really is. Hope she'll do some more singing in some future film.
I have a feeling Michelle would have acted the hell out of this movie. I Loved Madonna's version, and I guess we'll never know. But I know Michelle's acting is just "too good to miss."
I would have preferred Pfeiffer in this role. Madonna was okay but lackluster. I'd like to see Michelle Pfeiffer as Norma Desmond in the movie musical version of Sunset Blvd. #MichellePfeifferNormaDesmond #MichellePfeifferSunsetBlvdMOVIE
I actually like this. The expressiveness fits the song. Not the strongest vocal but I think it would've been stronger after she got the role and worked on it a little more.
She should be she spent a long time researching Evitia.. every thought, every mannerism and had her down cold. The Evita may not have been as beautiful as Madonna but she was driven and charismatic , and she was right person for the job(putting her country back to gather and leading it into a brighter future)..it just a shame she died so young it's would have interesting to see what else she would done,
Wow, I did not know that Michelle Pfeiffer considered Evita, and Oliver Stone didn't choose her. With Box Office is only $141milions (comparing to Michelle Pfeiffer's Dangerous Mind box office at $350millions), Evita would have been much higher box office with Michelle Pfeifer. I remembered wanting to see it at the theater but nobody else I knew wanted to go b/c of Madonna as an Evita. Interesting indeed.
hey, I think everyone speculates on the fact, that Madonna must have paid the production a little to get the part, but its just my opinion that "Bless God!" she did it because I would have been very disappointed in seeing Pfeiffer in the part because the part was like written for Madonna and her strong character.
Thanks for posting this -- I hadn't heard Michelle Pfeiffer's version of this until now. Unfortunately, she's not as vocally right for the role as Madonna was. She has the right look, but Madonna suited the role best. Madonna was the right choice.
wow, thats the best (most polished) i've heard michelle pfeiffer sing, and that includes her role in the Prince of Egypt movie/OST. however, madonna was still the best possible choice for the film IMO, and did a terrific job; the key to her success in the role, despite her not having A Voice, is her impressive characterization of the lyrics, emotions and scenes - which michelle, sorry to say, couldn't quite keep up in this demo, IMO. still love her though! ---- oh, and Patti LuPone Is A GODDESS.
I actually think they should have cast Michelle Pfieffer. I think her voice is very pretty and keep in mind it's just a demo. Madonna had months of training with an opera singing coach before recording Evita, and Michelle could have had the same. Michelle Pfieffer is also a much better actress. But Madonna was good in Evita.
Mundo Cotidiano Did anyone say they hated her? Madonna has NO business being in movies at ALL! She CANNOT act, we all know that. Michelle is an actual actress. Not a great singer but one hell of an actress.
mrfrogbutt1 But Evita was a Musical. Actually that's why Madonna succeded: because it was more about singing than about actually acting. So why did she suck?
Mundo Cotidiano Shes not the best singer for a musical. Shes very limited in her singing abilities and that's why she lipsynchs ALOT. She wasn't very good in Evita, it was more like a very long MTV video minus any acting. Evita is more for Patti Lupone
I don't like Madonna much either, but I must def. say she did a great job with 'Evita' & I don't know why she got such crap from everyone..weird...but anyway, I absolutely LOVE Michelle Pfeiffer! But I don't know if her voice is nearly strong enough to have done 'Evita'..Of course, she was fine in 'Hairspray!'
guys ... why are u still talking about it..it was 1996 ,Madonna did a good job..only God knows what have would happen if Michelle wuold have been Evita...And come on now don't be assurd with this movie Madonna showed that she can sing differents kinds of music beautifully...Thank for the post kiss Ale
While this is just a demo- Madonna was the right choice of the role. She has a more commanding presence than Michelle. Don't get me wrong- I ADORE Michelle Pfeiffer. Have ever since Grease 2. But Madonna can stand there staring at you with that certain "I'll drive you into the ground in 10 seconds flat" look that you know she means business. Michelle is more light hearted and quirky. Besides, Madonna did win the Golden Globe for Best Actress. Guess she did something right.
I love MF but Madonna was clearly the best for this role. I've heard MF could play the role of Madonna on a biographical movie. Who knows? I think it would be great
u know, i think exactly the same as i am a meryl streep fan! but the idea of meryl as evita is weard. i am argentinian and i know evita`s face like the back of my hand haha. i find it weard beacuse there's no similarity in their faces. u wouldnt have found it weard because u may not be as familiarized with her face as we may be.. but annnnnyway, meryl would have given SUCH a WONDERFUL perfomance that no face would matter. hahaha AND SHE WOULD HAVE COME TO ARGENTINAAAAAA !!!
Hm, I never heard of them having a big disagreement like that. Too bad, I love Patti. The age thing makes some sense too, but it's film, they could easily have worked around that. Wikipedia says it's age, and that Patti was asked if she wanted to play Evita's mother but she refused. Seems to me like the idea of there being a fight of some kind is the most likely.
Madonna was the original actress for the fabulous baker boys or at least the offer was extended to her first. the roles were reversed with Evita. funny how life turns out.

first of all the broadway production was supposed to sound good. if anyone read the damn notes you would know that the movie version WAS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE SHIT. MADONNA was about the only one that was up for the role and some other singers bowed out. eva peron wasnt a singer. she was singing at the end for love and for her country.

i think i read/heard somewhere 2 different rumours about that: 1. she was too old for the role by then (she was 30 in '79 i think, so '79->'96?), and 2. she and andrew lloyd webber had a huge fight and falling out.........er, or was that about the musical production? meh.
BAD thanks God Madonna won this role!!! Webber said Madonna's voice was perfect webber insisted the recording to be LIVE and withoyt studio stuff so Madonna made it. Thanx to Evita cause Madonna took a lot of vocal lessons
I agree with you on that, a broadway-singer would have maybe made it better. But when you compare Madonna and Pfeiffer - OMG, one of them isn`t even a singer ! So not a very tough choice here...
no its not a tranished opinion its a difference between class and style. One is Royalty the other just rich you decide. I think anybody with class and style understands the difference
Madonna was the best choice for Evita. I LOVE Michelle Pfeiffer, and she can most definitely sing, but Madonna was overall more believable in the role. I think if Michelle had played it, it would have been more whitewashed. Madonna, being Italian brought some cultural understanding to the role. I ALWAYS compare Evita and Frida honestly: if Madonna had played Frida Kahlo, the movie would have bombed miserably - but because Salma Hayek played Frida, the film was a work of art. Hayek brought her cultural believability to the role. I am not a fan of whitewashing in films, I believe cultural competency is necessary in order to accurately portray certain periods in history. Good films and filmmakers understand that, (like Alan Parker & Julie Taymor did with Evita & Frida) and casting a whiter or less ethnic actor is usually a HUGE mistake. Therefore, Madonna was clearly the best choice for Eva Peron. Michele Pfeiffer would have been culturally inappropriate; great actress that she is, just not for this role.
for a non singer, michelle has a nice voice. she just needed a little coaching. but madonna had the nuts for the role. and that atonal part at the end is written that way musically. . .
i think this song was too high 4 Michelle 2sing. shes done 4 movies where she sings, including 2 musicals so it is obvious she could hav been great for dis movie but she isnt a professional singer like Madonna is so Michelle would hav just needed a lot of vocal coach just so she could get the words and notes flowing well without straining or falling short. she sings good here but there were a good amount of bad notes too. by the way Michelle is my favorite actress so dont get mad at me for this.
must take into account that michelle pfeiffer is actress and singer if not in the papers on which to sing it makes me wonder like this version and that of Buenos Aires, and agree to the age pfeiffer and Madonna are not more 3 or 4 years of difference for my michelle have it any wonder, as well as fixed the voice you could fix madonna michelle acute because the rest sounds great
Michelle is very talented in everything she does and I love her voice
Michelle Pfeiffer is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life. She's just too perfect to be true.! I love her so much..
Michelle is a divine beauty
She backed out of EVITA after it was decided to shoot on location in Argentina as opposed to a Hollywood lot as originally planned..
that is amazing as it has not been editing she has such a soothing voice
Michelle Pfeiffer is always perfect!!!!!
I do like the way she says "Yes! ...oh yes."
Michelle is so underrated today... where are the main roles???
Pfeiffer says the performances people always mention to her are in Scarface, Batman Returns, and (her best work, IMO) The Fabulous Baker Boys.
I REALLY REALLY like it!!
Sorry, I know that she is an actress, not a professional singer...but god...she sings like everyone who has once in her life been in a school choire ! Madonna was the perfect choice. Just love it 😍
i still believe madonna was the best choice
i believe no one else could express the magic on evita better then madonna
I couldn't agree more! She sang with such authority and conviction.
@GoddessofCoruscant We're definitely in agreement there. She's such an incredible performer.
You can hear her singing chops better in the Fabulous Baker Boys, because it's raw. Hairspray and Grease 2 both have a lot of additional things to help her voice. She's amazing in all, but brilliant in Fabulous Baker Boys.

Fábio Henrique she lost it to Madonna, she chose nothing. And her voice is shit.
I like it.
No offense but it was Madonnas movie. She was not playing Evita, she is Evita in all common sense.
Don’t forget Madonna had a voice coach and did voice lessons for Evita. She is Evita. I just wonder how Michelle would have transformed into Evita.
thanks for posting this, but lets not forget how much the music was changed for madonna, don't get me wrong, madonna was great in the film but it was "evita light" and she needed this movie to save her career after the whole sex phase she went through. as far as i'm concerned no matter the key it's in, EVITA is one of the best stage to film versions in a long time. sorry to those who don't agree, viva madonna!!!! and long may EVITA be seen as a stage show

it's beautiful
This was more Julie convington (first Evita recording ) than lupones. Lupone had the better arrangement to be honest ...

If Michelle had done Evita, the Oscar would have been hers.
All respect to Michelle and she did a good job here for an actress. That said, thank god she got pregnant and Madonna got the part!
This is very very good
The last parts were quite painful hearing, but overall good.
Oh boy... did her voice improve between her audition for Evita and Hairspray... O_O
@mabdancer which is madonna's vocal range?,i know she isn't a mariah carey,but i think she's a good singer.
Madonna Ciccone was Evita
WHERES THE "BUENOS AIRES" DEMO??? PLEASE PUT UP.
I love Michelle more than just about anything, but I'm so happy she turned this role down...
She should be she spent a long time researching Evitia.. every thought, every mannerism and had her down cold. SHE WAS THE ONE!
Where did these tracks come from.
Is there anyway I can download this?xx

I'd love to see Michelle Pfeiffer in Cats, especially since she's already played Catwoman.
I bet she's glad she wasn't in that movie.
what a terrible suggestion
I just crossed myself for that suggestion and I'm Jewish
Well, I'm very happy that Madona got this role. Michelle isn't best siger. ;-)
Debbie Harry would have been a great Evita, if it were done in the early 80's
i've always thought Annie Lennox
Well Said :)
WIithout Madonna Evita Wouldn't Have Been So Good :)
She Made That Movie :D
she is good
Michelle is *tops* - all the way around - in my book! David E. Kelley (the diva's husband) is one lucky guy!
don't forget "Batman Returns". Madonna was considered for it but she chose to do another film instead.
Wow, that was weak. Glad they passed on her.
I actually think they should have cast Michelle Pfieffer. I think her voice is very pretty and keep in mind it's just a demo. Madonna had months of training with an opera singing coach before recording Evita, and Michelle could have had the same. Michelle Pfieffer is also a much better actress. Michelle Pfeiffer can REALLY sing!
There is nothing wrong with her voice. Just as good as Madonna.
Gary Brunton Madonna sucked in Evita
mrfrogbutt1 What are you talking about? You're just a hater.
Mundo Cotidiano Did anyone say they hated her? Madonna has NO business being in movies at ALL! She CANNOT act, we all know that. Michelle is an actual actress. Not a great singer but one hell of an actress.

guys ... why are u still talking about it..it was 1996 ,Madonna did a good job..only God knows what have would happen if Michelle wuold have been Evita...And come on now don't be assurd with this movie Madonna showed that she can sing differents kinds of music beautifully...Thank for the post kiss Ale
She has a pretty voice but there isn't emotion behind it. :/ She tried though.
Not much expression. That said, I was thrilled when Madonna got the role!
While this is just a demo- Madonna was the right choice of the role. She has a more commanding presence than Michelle. Don't get me wrong- I ADORE Michelle Pfeiffer. Have ever since Grease 2. I love MF but Madonna was clearly the best for this role. I've heard MF could play the role of Madonna on a biographical movie. Who knows? I think it would be great
I always wondered why they didn't go ahead with Michelle.....
u know, i think exactly the same as i am a meryl streep fan! but the idea of meryl as evita is weard. i am argentinian and i know evita`s face like the back of my hand haha. i find it weard beacuse there's no similarity in their faces. u wouldnt have found it weard because u may not be as familiarized with her face as we may be.. but annnnnyway, meryl would have given SUCH a WONDERFUL perfomance that no face would matter. hahaha AND SHE WOULD HAVE COME TO ARGENTINAAAAAA !!!
Hm, I never heard of them having a big disagreement like that. Too bad, I love Patti. The age thing makes some sense too, but it's film, they could easily have worked around that. Madonna was the original actress for the fabulous baker boys or at least the offer was extended to her first. the roles were reversed with Evita. funny how life turns out.
this song really is nothing without Jonathan Pryce... hmmm... maybe she could have pulled it off but we all know the movie was what it was because of Madonna
These demos are after months of coaching that she got when the role was very close to going to her. Michelle can't approach Madonna's higher register. You heard her try at 4:14... laughable.
PDC1987 Madonna didn’t even attempt the high notes.
@@Renzoluis99 She literally sang all of them, try actually listening to the soundtrack.
LOVE Michelle but Madonna was truly made to play Evita.
@ltljulian so you say madonna can't sing?.
first of all the broadway production was supposed to sound good. if anyone read the damn notes you would know that the movie version WAS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE SHIT. MADONNA was about the only one that was up for the role and some other singers bowed out. eva peron wasnt a singer. she was singing at the end for love and for her country.

when it should have,
I'm guessing Patti Lupone would not have been a big enough name to get it bankrolled,
and the ever lurking Meryl Streep would have starred.
I think there were one or two non-musical TV Movies on Eva's life.
This is only your opinion... and it must not be completely true looking at how many records she has sold so far... ;-)
i think i read/heard somewhere 2 different rumours about that: 1. she was too old for the role by then (she was 30 in '79 i think, so '79->'96?), and 2. she and andrew lloyd webber had a huge fight and falling out.........er, or was that about the musical production? meh.
Seriously...the dogs in the neibourhood where barking @ 4:14...
@mabdancer Yes, like an octave lower.
Both Roxie LOL! yeah, they would fit the part. i can just imagine them in those skimpy costumes in Chicago, Yum!
BAD
thanks God Madonna won this role!!! Webber said Madonna's voice was perfect
webber insisted the recording to be LIVE and withoyt studio stuff so Madonna made it. Thanx to Evita cause Madonna took a lot of vocal lessons
alexbezable um, no...it wasn't sung live...it was prerecorded with the exception of Peron's "She is a diamond" and Eva's Lament...those two were live
I agree with you on that, a broadway-singer would have maybe made it better. But when you compare Madonna and Pfeiffer - OMG, one of them isn`t even a singer ! So not a very tough choice here...
i love evita the musical(movie to a less degree) but a hybrid of Pfifer/Madonna - would be ideal IMHO, Madonna's voice and Michele's face - epic win
no its not a tranished opinion its a difference between class and style. One is Royalty the other just rich you decide. I think anybody with class and style understands the difference

@HRHQueenMabb : Well Madonna was great for the part because they lowered the whole score at least a third.
That explains why I sing the movie track better than the Broadway track
YES!!! lol j/k
then they would have cast the voice anyway. Are you saying Evita didn't require any acting skill?
that can be possible
i think barbra is a very good singer too
LOL at 4:14... I can't stop laughing!!

i think this song was too high 4 Michelle 2sing. shes done 4 movies where she sings, including 2 musicals so it is obvious she could hav been great for dis movie but she isnt a professional singer like Madonna is so Michelle would hav just needed a lot of vocal coach just so she could get the words and notes flowing well without straining or falling short. she sings good here but there were a good amount of bad notes too. by the way Michelle is my favorite actress so dont get mad at me for this.
must take into account that michelle pfeiffer is actress and singer if not in the papers on which to sing it makes me wonder like this version and that of Buenos Aires, and agree to the age pfeiffer and Madonna are not more 3 or 4 years of difference for my michelle have it any wonder, as well as fixed the voice you could fix madonna michelle acute because the rest sounds great
