Great way to create the structure. I'd probably use red or black handle. Perhaps a button to decorate where the strap joins the bag!

I couldn’t tell how the strips were connected to the bag. Saw the x marks, but no explanation. Hand sewn?
Looked like 2 pieces of ribbon each in a U shape, one per side. I am pretty sure it was hand stitched because of the X.
Maybe the handles could be sewn on when flat, but these aren't holding anything heavy.

When cutting out, you should always cut in the one direction. The shape of the scissor blades are different.
Sounds like you are cutting hair not fabric .The seam is inside the item you are never going to see it.
