When you hold the door open or do anything else for someone, you are showing the world (and yourself) that you are a decent human being, who has been brought up right. If somebody is ignorant enough not to say “thank you” to you, then there is something wrong with them and it’s their issue, not yours. Some people are just trashy and self-absorbed. 💛

A lot of US folks seem to think that knife crime is out of control in the UK. The truth is, most knife crime is inter-gang rivalry, and even though US knife crime is far rarer than gun crime, it's still double what it is in the UK.

There are 50,000 knife crimes a year in England (too many) but that includes all crimes involving a knife as far as people being killed with a knife it is 3.2 knife murders per million in the UK compared with 5.0 per million in the USA so you are 56% more likely to be murdered with a knife in the USA.

It's all down to Donald Trump deflecting questions about gun control by stating that knife crime was turning Britain into a "war zone" and the US public lapped it up.

When you have a good work life balance, and a lot of beautiful countryside, and woodlands to explore, mushroom picking might be a great way to occupy some of your free time. There’s a lot of foraging courses available to help identify which ones are safe in the UK too.

As a brit, who has held the door open for thousands of people. I'd say "YOU'RE WELCOME", to prompt the manners. (I think shame works better in the UK though?)

There are very few dangerous things out in the wild and the countryside in Europe. If you are visiting from America you should know that mushrooms are one of the few things in the wild that might kill you.

In Sweden, it is considered impolite not to come as planned and at the right time.

Knife crime is usually gang related and its mostly young men. Its also in very specific areas not likely that it would affect a tourist. Central London where all the tourist sites are is very safe just need to 'keep your hand on your ha'penny' . In other words pickpockets. Worst place I found was on the Paris metro in France. If you use your commonsense you are not going to have any problems. I think the Police in London probably spend more time giving directions to tourists than catching criminals but I suppose you could say their presence keeps criminals away.

Sweden is quite racist. In the UK, racism is much less acceptable.

Well, the UK has a long colonial history, there have only been many foreigners in Sweden for a few decades. They also have big problems with "foreign" gang crime in Sweden and can't get a grip on it.

Also the rest of the UK's people will be more friendly and genuine than in London. Especially if you come up to the North.
My husband comments on how often a 10 minute walk ends up taking him nearly an hour with chatting to people on the way. Most of them are people he's never met before.
