  • Episode 72: High Blood Pressure And Kidney Disease: Management and Monitoring with Withings BPM Connect. When it comes to protecting your kidney health from kidney disease, there isn't anything more important than managing high blood pressure. And managing high blood pressure starts with KNOWING what your blood pressure is. Your kidneys are made of tiny blood vessels that help remove toxins and waste from your blood. For this to work, your body needs to maintain a specific range of force known as blood pressure. When your blood pressure is not managed, the amount of force used to push the blood through your body is increased. This increased force can damage the filters and blood vessels within your kidneys…leading to further kidney damage and eventually kidney failure. Guess what manages your blood pressure - your kidneys. As they get increasingly damaged, they are less likely to be able to maintain the proper blood pressure, which leads to even more damage, and….well, you see where this is going. This is why it is extremely important to manage your blood pressure to prevent kidney damage (CKD) or kidney failure.
    I’ve used a number of home blood pressure monitors, and nothing has come close to the one I use today: The Withings BPM Connect.
    Use Coupon Code: DADVICE to get 20% off orders greater than $99 (excludes ScanWatch, Thermo, BPM Core, and Move ECG) - discount valid until July 31, 2020.
    Withings BPM Connect purchase link: www.withings.c...
    Now I want to be transparent, Withings sent me this for free, but everything I’m saying about it is my own words and opinion. I’ve also been a Withings customer for a long time - they make awesome scales and I have one in my bathroom which I use nearly every day. I do NOT receive any commission for purchases of the Withings BPM Connect.
    Withings BPM Connect Blood Pressure Monitor Review:
    Let’s now talk about some of the cool features of the Withings BPM Connect:
    • It’s wireless!
    • USB port charges the built-in rechargeable battery of the blood pressure monitor
    • The USB port is a standard port - no expensive proprietary cables to lose.
    • It truly is portable - and I travel a lot, so portability is important for me.
    • It’s wireless, and not just Bluetooth. It also has built-in WiFi. This means you can take your blood pressure without having your phone next to you and it stills syncs!
    • Let’s talk about syncing - it using the Withings Health Mate app - the same app I have been using with my Withings scale. Each morning I weigh myself and my scale syncs via wifi, and each time I use the Withings BPM Connect to check my blood pressure, it syncs over wifi to the exact same app.
    • The app is super easy to use, is very visual, syncs with my Apple Health app, AND even lets me share my health report with my doctor.
    • Syncing reliably is critical - I’ve used so many other blood pressure monitors that required my phone right next to the big bulky machine and they wouldn’t always sync. Bad syncing will discourage you from taking your blood pressure consistently and we need that consistency to manage our blood pressure, our kidneys are counting on it. I absolutely love that the Withings BPM Connect syncs via Bluetooth and Wifi - it has never missed syncing.
    This little guy is the perfect blood pressure monitor for kidney health. It’s small, lightweight doesn’t have some big box with power cables and tubes, and it last for months and months on a single charge. You can even fit it in your backpack or heck, your pocket! The app is great and it’s easy to share your results with your health care team.
    All kidney patients have to monitor and manage their blood pressure. Having a device at home to do that isn’t an option, it’s a requirement. I continue to take my blood pressure multiple times a day just to make sure my prescriptions are working correctly. I’ve also been able to reduce some of my dosages as I’ve lost weight and improved my health since being diagnosed.

      This is a great device for keeping an eye on your blood pressure. But what is most important is getting A device and keeping an eye on your blood pressure. Our blood pressure is what powers our kidneys - and it has to be just right to keep them running well and lasting as long as possible. Thanks for being part of our community!

    Do you monitor your blood pressure at home? Let me know if you do, how often you do it, and what type of device you use. And more importantly, is your doctor using that information to help you keep your blood pressure at a kidney friendly level?

    Hi James, I presently use Omron meter, which is good but bulky. Also, the cuff needs to be replaced every two to three years. Since I’m nearing a second replacement, I’m going to take your advice and look into buying the BP monitor. As always, thank you.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +1

      I used to use an Omron - had 2 ongoing issues with it. I'd get an error on inflation and need to check the tubes between the cuff and the unit, and then the syncing wasn't reliable. I am so much happier with the Withings BPM Connect and I'm sure you will be to. It's still shocking just how small it is and how long the battery last.

      Kidney Stones is coming tomorrow and I'll see what we can do on gout. In the meantime, I drink black cherry juice and snack on frozen black cherries to manage my gout. I would sometimes get it extremely bad in my feet and toes. I never looked to see why, but my doc recommended it and it has been great for me. I like to buy them in the frozen bags and gently blend them in a small blender then eat it like cherry ice cream.

      There is a rare form of gout that is referred to as Refractory Gout, which is associated with kidney problems. More information about this type of gout can be found at the National Kidney Foundation website www.kidney.org/atoz/content/refractory-gout. It’s painful but responds to well to Allopurinol.

    Hi James,
    I was so excited to see this video. I was almost ready to buy the bpm. But first I wanted to check the Amazon ratings. The wind was knocked out of my sail. I trust your review but I was hoping for the Amazon ratings to be better. Now, I'm a little apprehensive....

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому

      I've been using mine for a while, and I've been using the Withings smart scale for years - neither have given me any problems or issues. When I first got my BPM connect I went to my doctors office and had them take my blood pressure, then I ran the BPM Connect (its so portable) and they were within 2 points on the top number and exactly the same on the bottom number (which is easy to account for me reaching over to press the button and talking). I just looked at some of the Amazon reviews (I only focused on the negative ones to see what might be said) and I find my experience doesn't align with the few that didn't like the device. I love that it doesn't over inflate, I find the cuff very comfortable, and the results are accurate for me. One important part about the accuracy is you NEED to sit and rest for a few minutes before taking your blood pressure - and you should do this at the doctors office also. If you don't sit for a few minutes, there is no guarantee on the accuracy.
      One other issue some of the reviewers may be facing is not understanding how your blood pressure changes throughout the day. That is why I take my BP 3 times a day. I take my pills first thing in the morning, then get ready for the day. I take my first BP about 1 hour after taking my pills so they had time to start working. I then take it again after lunch, around 2pm. My meds will be starting to wear off soon if the dosage isn't right. I then my afternoon meds around 5pm and take my blood pressure around 6:30-7pm again. I use an app to remind me of my pills and to take my BP. If I take my BP first thing in the morning, it runs high - same if I take it before my 2nd dose in the late afternoon or after being active and moving a lot. Just standing up and walking to refill my water increased my BP (as it does for everyone). Perhaps some of the reviews about accuracy are not comparing the readings from it with those from their doctor at the same time (like I tested).
      In the end, you have to trust the device you are using. Withings offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee - for any reason. They even send the return label, so it's easy to order one, put it to the test, and see what you think.
      Let me know if you get one and what you think of it.

      You should! Keeping an eye on your blood pressure is important for kidney patients. If we see it starting to increase, we need to let our doctors know so that they can help get it back under control before additional damage is done to our kidneys. Team that up with a good diet and you are on a great path!

    How can we manage Blood Pressure, relying only on Medication? Is there any other thing we can do? Medication is not working for me..Can anyone suggest any solution.?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +3

      That is a great question. It takes more than just medication. You'll want to work on your diet and lifestyle (exercise). Managing blood pressure takes a number of things - we all just have to find our own unique combination.

    Hey James. How high was your bp when you were diagnosed with S5 and how many meds did it take initially to control! Thank again and keep doing the fabulous work you’re doing.

      I can't remember the highest number, but the top did break 200 and the bottom was also very high. It was so high my vision got very blurry and I've never recovered fully (I now have to use reading glasses - but can drive without glasses). When I arrived at the ER I collapsed in the parking lot from a heart attack due to my high blood pressure. Here is a list of the final meds and the dosages/times that got me under control: www.dadvicetv.com/blood-pressure-medication

      Dadvice TV - Kidney Health Coach wow that’s incredible and quite a lot of meds it would seem to control your bp. I’m so sorry your health was so poor but boy am I glad you’re ready to take on the world today! My mum is on bisoprolol and Amlodipine 5mg. However, her bp needs to be better managed. 10mg Amlodipine caused ankle swelling etc. So now looking at Doxazosin.

    What’s good numbers for BP?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому

      The standard target for BP is 130/80 or lower. It is possible to be too low, but being too low is not something you typically hear about with kidney disease. Your doctor can let you know what your individual target is - it could vary depending a number of factors.
