Sorry, I forgot for a second you'd never have a safety bicycle. I meant to say go ride your ordinary some more, Luddite.
Jonathan Francis Lol moot point. Most trickle down technology comes from government research, not outrageous bicycle componentry. You sound like one of those guys that get dropped continuously by guys on old 10 speed Caad10’s and buy stupid equipment to make yourself feel better 😂
Totally applaud SRAM for releasing this! Increased durability vs. RED v1 and tons of innovation and attention to detail. Di2 looks ancient in comparison.
I do believe the this attempt represents a very wrong shift. The price tag is so extraordinary with no apparent benefits. Innovation for sake of sucking more money out of our pockets. Just for sponsored pros. This is going to be a hard sell for any other. Hope not many people will catch on this "more" gears train. Staying calm with my mechanical, cost efficient, easy to use & replace groupset. Focusing on what makes me happy while riding a bike. ;-)! For sure not paying 4k$ for a groupset.
I mean... the reason you enjoy your mechanical groupset so much is because there were expensive "top of the line" versions created that led to the less expensive models working that much better. If it is in fact true that these new chainrings are 50% more durable and that adds to longevity, it seems to me this is a positive shift. I agree that 99% of us are not going to go out and pay $4000 for a new groupset, but saying that cyclists of all scopes will not benefit from this at some point in the future is simply being blind to the way technology advances. 3 years from now you could be riding on more affordable affordable Rival eTap. :) Who knows.
Technology will always trickle down as long as there are dentists to buy these expensive parts. I am also sticking to mechanical drivetrains for now but the Tiagra I ride today is miles better the the tiagra from a few years ago. It is even better the some older dura ace stuff. Let the rich people enjoy their expensive stuff it keeps the bike shops in business and eventually we'll ride similar tech once it trickles down.

@@mattmaurer2297 It's unclear. He says "It [the power meter] too is machined from the same piece of material." He doesn't specify the same as what, but "too" refers to the chainrings. On the other hand, the version with no power meter is "easily upgradable to the one with". Honestly, I'm confused.
@@beeble2003 I had to go look up another article: However, when one of the chainrings wears out, or if it gets damaged somehow, you’re not just buying one chainring, not just two chainrings, but two chainrings and a power meter. And the cost of rings and power meter unit is reported to be about $820.
The power meter is machined out of the same metal as the chain rings. Bikerumor was the only publication to actually mention that sram would sell a new powermeter + rings at a discounted price when it comes time for replacement. They say 50% off, but still that’s going to be at least $400. Only a fool would buy a quarq power meter, after market power meter makers are going the real winners.
Smale Rider This video mentions the half-price replacement scheme. But, still, this is ridiculous. What kind of idiot turns a power meter into a disposable wear item? Thanks to you and Matt for doing more digging on this.

Looks like good step in the right direction! though I'm a little skeptical about the new 10-tooth cog as opposed to adding a 34 or 36 at the low end paired with bigger chainrings (54-42?). The 10-tooth sprocket has a lot more friction doesn't it?
And wears out fast, taking the chain with it. Absolutely stupid. Lets stay with Campy 11s, you can buy 12-32 cassette now, and it includes all cogs up to 17.
Based on data from the IHPVA technical journal, there should be less than 1% efficiency difference between a 10t and 11t. So 10t has slightly more friction, but I'd much rather have a 10% longer gear than 1% less friction because you'll sacrifice a lot more efficiency with an excessively high cadence. Besides, you still have 11 bigger cogs to choose from, it's not as if the 10t is the only cog on the cassette.
@@compassionsix He started 80 miles into the century, so his legs were really fresh, haha! Don't worry about what others can do - just do you. There's always someone faster and someone slower than everyone.
EXACTLY correct! I built a $10K (for $5.5K) aero bike with SRAM eTap, the lightest everything else and Zipp 303's. In theory it should be fast as hell. I also own a steel aero bike I had made by an English bicycle maker in 1995. It has Shimano 105 (5800), carbon accessories and a nice set of aluminum wheels. Both have been ridden 1000's of miles over the last three years. Never has there been more than a :34 time gap between the two bicycles on the same rides/conditions. The new stuff is cool and everything but it really doesn't make that big of a difference.
screw shimano. I am "ride good and cheap" boy. Who offers me top groupset for lower price has my attention and money. Shimano is also expensive as hell. So I stick to mechanical Sram Red and Campagnolo Super Record.
It's a bit too much for a drivetrain , don't you think ? From 3000 to 4000 euros ... It really is a premium product , but there are some added costs like the need of new wheels , chainrings are one piece... so when it's time to change one , you have to send them to sram ... and you're left with no bike ... not to mention the new bb
You dont have to send anything to sram the chainrings are one piece not the entire crankset. You can go to a bike shop and buy a new pair of rings. Just like the direct mount chainrings on mountain bikes.
NO ! Everything on this groupset is proprietary from the chain to the cassette to the chainrings and the freehub body ... I really hope no one buy this shit honestly, tired to see companys locking everything up.
Not buying what they're selling here. We have to be smart consumers and vote with our dollars, VOTE NO! We do not want to be tied and limited by these expensive groupsets just to access a few tidbits of intelligent technology. Really love it as I could now use my Exploro for Road Gravel and MTB rides. One bike for all :)
$4k?! Why is the cycling industry so focused on the super rich consumer. Top of the line bikes are now $12k, wheels $3k, and groupsets $4k?!
If you had kept watching for the next 30 seconds, you would have had your question answered.
You have benefited from trickle down technology literally your entire life, and in almost all aspects of your life...and you're pissed about it? Go ride your fixie some more, Luddite.
Sorry, I forgot for a second you'd never have a safety bicycle. I meant to say go ride your ordinary some more, Luddite.
Mh scott foil II with 105 and china wheels 2k € so whats the problem?
Walmart will sell you a Huffy; you’re welcome.
Jonathan Francis Lol moot point. Most trickle down technology comes from government research, not outrageous bicycle componentry.
You sound like one of those guys that get dropped continuously by guys on old 10 speed Caad10’s and buy stupid equipment to make yourself feel better 😂
Thanks for the nice review! But the price round about $4000 is insane!
The ability to configure the controls seems like the ultimate "dont ride my bike!"
Yep, you can put it in valet mode.
Totally applaud SRAM for releasing this! Increased durability vs. RED v1 and tons of innovation and attention to detail. Di2 looks ancient in comparison.
You haven't heard rumours about the new Di3!? :D))))
That’s twice the prize of my Caad12 + Shimano 105.
So what?
I got a CaadX 105 from the rental fleet of my LBS. They rented it no more than a couple times, and got a 50% discount on it 😁
Oh My Froomey!
That new SRAM Red eTAP AXS looks awesome and hyper nice! (drooling profusely)
@@MAGAIVER why dentists and not other docs like surgeons? Because dentists have an easier 9 to 5 job that pays very high, yet they're not on call too much of the time as to compromise their training schedule?
I haven't watched gcn videos during whole winter and now when I'm coming back... Have you guys hired new camera/editing crew? Those shots look gorgeous! Lovely piece of work! 👍
Having to buy a new power meter every time I change rings is a solid non starter to ever want this set.
What? I thought the video stated you just need to swap both rings at once, not the entire spider and the included power meter.
Wow...what an upgrade. I love the new tech that’s being implemented into cycling. As I don’t earn enough money to benefit from these benefits I may have to follow Si by wearing a cycling cap....backwards!!
Did you use the word 'affordable' in ur vid ? ...heehee
Super cool but maybe in my next life...ya know the one were I'm rich !
wow that could be the tech of the year because it is already the tech of the month
I can't decide if the chain looks awesome or awful 😬
Is crap
@@RealNotallGaming excellent comment, sir
Looks good when flush with cassette. But not so much when off the teeth.
Just a chain. No big deal if it doesn’t look as good, as long as it works better and is quieter.
Can a chain look awesome? Its plain as hell.
You guys are so cool and lucky. I’m 17 and love road biking but will never be able to afford the awesome bikes you ride 😔keep it up love watching your videos really good 👍
Thats look like the future!
Technically, it was the future.
Thanks, Si, and I'll watch this about five times so I'm ready for the pop quiz.
Make sure you’re sitting down when you find out the price of a new chain 🤬
69 eur here in Germany. I don't find this so extraordinary...
lux That’s a lot.
@@okantichrist I mean, if an 11-speed sram X1 chain goes for around 25 to 30 Eur, I don't see the price so outrageous, especially when I consider that the people buying a 4000 eur groupset could/should probably be able to afford a 69 eur chain ;)
Love the cinematography!
They do. But i think that weight weenies prefer this.
Weightweenies prefer red mechanical 11s with THM crankset
Insider news, fresh from todays conference call; they are working on compatibility with sram eagle cassette.
Thanks for your time and effort on these videos too
Thanks James
Looks cool until you get dropped by other cyclist on a 10 speed alloy bike. 🤪
jun macalintal I road a 100 miler and got buzzed by a young kid on a fixie with a skateboard helmet and cutoffs.
@@compassionsix He started 80 miles into the century, so his legs were really fresh, haha! Don't worry about what others can do - just do you. There's always someone faster and someone slower than everyone.
Yeah most bike performance actually depends on the rider not the bike itself
Yeah, sorry jun, I just had to do it.
(Great when they're triathletes).
And it's a 9 speed.........
Still on my Sram 2012 10 speed group set and rides like a dream to this day 🙏🏼
Save money by just getting stronger and faster vs new groupsets😅
46/33???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Made a SRAM Fan out of me
'Pro' only until it comes down to a Force or even Rival level! It is amazing tech regardless
4K? I mean, a ZF tranmission for a car will almost be cheaper.
Thanks GCN another great video and good see see what I’ll be riding in about 5 years time.
Weird looking chainrings
Thanks for the great review. Well out of my price range, but I'm liking what I'm seeing.
Well, that's a year late for team Aqua Blue Sport...
Solid Breakdown Mate!!!
I'm still a Shimano boy
Same here! Always have been and will be.
Im a whatever the fuck works best for me boy. Grow up
screw shimano. I am "ride good and cheap" boy. Who offers me top groupset for lower price has my attention and money. Shimano is also expensive as hell. So I stick to mechanical Sram Red and Campagnolo Super Record.
Thanks for the review & demo, Si
It's a bit too much for a drivetrain , don't you think ? From 3000 to 4000 euros ... It really is a premium product , but there are some added costs like the need of new wheels , chainrings are one piece... so when it's time to change one , you have to send them to sram ... and you're left with no bike ... not to mention the new bb
Wait a bit, it'll get a lot cheaper, I got my etap hrd for 1300€ last month
I don't know anyone who own only a top end bike. If you own one, then it is most likely that you have another bike.
If you're in the market for a new bike the Canyons with eTAP AXS are $7500 which is a killer dealer considering what they give you
You dont have to send anything to sram the chainrings are one piece not the entire crankset. You can go to a bike shop and buy a new pair of rings. Just like the direct mount chainrings on mountain bikes.
wow stunning ride!
Sram burn in hell, this is a price of more complicated, fun and interesting system that calls "motorcycle". Sram dont scam.
Love the durability talk.
Non upgradeable 11spd levers, I thought it would only take a firmware upgrade?
Bit rough.
I love the system but that crank looks like shite.
Nice video guys , the new sram E-taps looks cool!
However, I am delighted to see advancements in bicycle componentry, there is some good work being done here, but the method of delivery is dastardly.
You don't have to worry about me @@ticklefritz5406, I'm a smart consumer. I worked it out and if I went for the $12,500 new bike with this group installed it would cost me more than $400 a month for 3 years. My car loan is lower than that.
I bought it and its shit. Noisy as hell. rough as guts
Liking your new and better cinematography A+
Damn, sram just threw a knockout punch to shimano
Threw a knockout punch at dentists...
Not really...
Not with that price point
I’m out of breath just listening to Simon’s monologue while riding. That was a tremendous amount of info in a short time.
Dropping tech facts while descending behind a Moto ... Boss.
It's great how the 1x and 2x shifters are the same.
My entire feed right now: SRAM RED eTAP AXS!!!!!!!
Ah, those Zipp bottle cages fit really great on that Orbea 👍
