  • The 2023 Sram Force AXS groupset is here, here are the major changes and our first ride review of Sram's second-tier road and gravel groupset. (Sram Force sits above Sram Rival and below Sram Red)
    The new Sram Force AXS 2023 groupset brings aesthetic as well as functional changes but is it a winning blow in the Sram vs Shimano groupset battle? Sram Force is designed to work with both road bikes and gravel bikes Sram has stuck with a 12-speed cassette but revised the shifters and front shifting, is this enough to make 2023 Sram Force AXS the best road bike or gravel groupset in the world? Sram Force lines up head to head with Shimano Ultegra Di2.

    I liked the old Force levers better. Having worked at Trek, I've ridden everything. Literally. Campy, Sram, Shimano, FSA, Rotor, all of it. And I know what I like. Shimanos new levers are better, but I like the feel of the bigger levers on the old Force and Red. I have both Force and Red on my bikes. When it comes to looks, I like the looks of the new chainrings. But I like Red axs chainrings better. When it comes to colors, I mildly agree this looks better, but I think it partially depends on the bike it's on. I strongly think the rear derailleur looks better now, along with the cranks. But I feel like the shifters and front derailleur are lacking. Same with the calipers. And finally, I can't wait to grab one of those chains and cassettes for my Red AXS bike. Blingy. Ive been watching those cassettes since before they came out.

    Love it all! It kills current Red but not future Red. Actually something I dislike is the smaller chainrings. For most users the current offerings are applicable and relevant. However for racers, I’m sure bigger rings would be appreciated. Sure yes the biggest gear is comparable to that of a 53-11 but what about the other gears? I’ve always found the smaller rings leave me searching for gears and nearly all of them are less efficient via smaller rings. I digress, this is a very good update!

    • @roadcc
      @roadcc  Рік тому +2

      It’s nice that the 50/37 rings have now been introduced to force, a 50-10 should give the same gear as a 55/11

    I disagree with the idea that SRAM is not being used on dream builds because of aesthetics. It's the weight. On paper SRAM Force AXS is still over 250g heavier than Ultegra R8100, but they're nearly the same price. How much does it cost to cut 250g elsewhere on the bike without compromising aero performance? It doesn't shift smoother, it isn't easier or cheaper to maintain (thank to DOT fluid brakes, integrated rings, and weird standards like XD drivers and their 12S chain pitch), it isn't more aero, and the drivetrain is arguably less efficient.
    I think it's pretty straightforward why SRAM is undesirable.
    Back in the day, SRAM Force 22 was almost as light as Dura-Ace and cheaper than Ultegra. The shifting was kind of rough but you got a lot of bang for your buck. Now what do we get?

    • @a1white
      @a1white Рік тому +1

      It’s simple. Batteries are heavy. If the industry is saying we have to go with fully wireless, we have to have heavy groupsets. I mean look at that huge front derailleur, with the block of electronics and battery plonked on top of it. I get it, it’s smoother, quicker shifting (apparently), but I don’t race and my old mechanical mech, which I use daily, shifts lovely and smooth (or maybe I just have an excellent local bike mechanic 😂)

    • @grahamo22
      @grahamo22 Рік тому

      I agree with your disagreement.
      Its down to price, availability and support.
      DI2 is far cheaper than SRAM and the components are far cheaper. $300-$400 for an XDR hub 12 speed cassette vs a $100 max for a Shimano 12-speed.
      I do have SRAM on a S-Works Tarmac but the winter bike is going back to Shimano as I can nearly buy a groupset for the cost of replacing just a front and rear DR from SRAM.
      Plus the advantage of not using DUB BB which dont last at all. Our club mechanic said something about the DUB wall bneing too thin and the bearings distort the wall earlier than they should. 10k miles and I'm on my second DUB BB and 90% of that was summer riding.

    • @user-lx6pk9os2d

    • @kellrockets101

    The really important question is whether the new items are as unreliable as previous versions. A colleagues entire Force groupset died after 6,000 miles in three years on a fair weather summer bike and SRAM said they could do nothing other than suggest he bought a new groupset. They couldnt even provide spares as the existing Force was incompatible with the new spares. so if you have an existing Force, you are screwed from hereon in.
    Speaking for myself, over four years I've had three dead rear derailleurs and one dead front on Etap AXS - and the SRAM support is non-existent. No serviceable parts they say and shrug that the bricked rear 'in a known problem' with the subtext that ' we have no interest in fixing the manufacturing/design fault'.
    Avoid SRAM like the plague unless you like broken unserviceable kit.

      @a1white Рік тому

      @@cdanrun1 this is why I really don’t understand why we’re moving towards wireless shifting as the default/only option. My mechanical shifting works great day after day, sure I’ve had the odd broken cable over the years, but shifting to the small ring means I can always get home if I’m stuck in the highest gear. I don’t need to worry about recharging it or have the massive expense of that rear derailleur to replace when it inevitably wears out. I get it perhaps if you race and your after gear shifts that are marginally quicker or smoother, but for your everyday rider, why?
