I would not have found this solution in a million years if I kept searching for conventional wisdom on UA-cam. You are the man! I'm going to try and address other causes of the code first, but regardless I appreciate someone who thinks outside the norm!

This is genius.. I was a little sceptical but tried on 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe with 175,000 miles. Next day, bammm monitors set and smog passed. Quick tip: I went to Lowe's and they drilled it for me so I didn't have to buy the drill bit. 😊😊😊

This tip "pulled my ass out of the fire." Back story: 10 months ago, my check-engine light comes on, code 420. This was a month before I had to have the 2-year emissions test. I didn't have the money. I ignored it. I got a letter from the DOT that my tags were suspended due to failure to get emissions tested. But when my tag stickers expired at the end of this year; I had to do something.
This worked for me....got me through emission testing....worked great! 2004 Toyota Camry, 2.4 L, 220,000 miles. Note that in my state there is no visual inspection beyond looking at the under-carriage with a mirror on a rod. My new installation was shiny; I roughed up the spark-plug-non-foulers with 80 grit sandpaper, dipped them in bleach and let them sit in the sun. This helped "age" them and make the modification not so obvious. Good luck to all, and OP, thank you...you saved me.
Edited to add: In my state, there is no tail-pipe test. They only hook their tester to the connector under your dash.
When drilling out the anti-fouler, use lots of oil to lubricate....it'll help to stop the drill bit from biting in to the anti-fouler.

Congrats, I’m glad to help anyone rip the system. Government gives people money that don’t deserve it and then takes the working middle class person who lives check to check and makes them try to spend their hard earned money for shit that doesn’t even benefit them, emissions is a scam in my book

    • @armchairtin-kicker503

Yes, I suppose bluing the anti-fouler parts would be a prudent move, keeping the "emissions modification" discrete. That stated, I went to a junkyard with the intention of picking up a used cat, for a sibiling, from a wrecked vehicle. The staff member informed me that it was against the law for them to sell cats. I told him, "some racket the state has setup." He nodded in acknowledgement.

Daniel,Thanks for posting this fix. No more PO420 code. The hardest part was actually drilling out the anti foulers without ruining the threads. I have a Blazer that has 2 cats and they were plugged. A new factory set up was over 1000.00. So I delete the smaller cat and replaced the main one with an aftermarket. Issue was the 420 code was coming still. The anti fouler mod fixed it and I am a happy boy!

Had a muffler shop weld it in for about $100 too. Worth looking into aftermarket converters to see if it will permanently and legally fix your problem.

I wanted to personally thank you for posting this fix. my 1998 Toyota Avalon had been throwing the p0420 code. My local repair shop wanted to charge me $800 for a new cat.. I told them to go f*** themselves. I went to my local AutoZone and picked up those non fouler's and went to my Menards and picked up a $10 brand new bit and it took about 5 minutes to drill out the non fouler. it was a pain in the ass to remove the O2 sensor but once I got it out and put the non foulers there it passed emissions with flying colors.

This trick worked for me. 2000 Honda Insight. I still plan on replacing the catalytic converter because emissions do cause health problems in congested areas. It was a pain keeping the washer from falling on the threads when I put it in the cat so I put a wire twist tie around it and tightened a rubber band around the trailing wire. Then made sure to take the twisty tie and the rubber band off so it wouldn't burn up.

Excellent craftiness, and if others are having issues with the aluminium and need something more robust; various brands make O2 sensor bung extensions just for this exact reason at varying lengths and in steel material. An alternative would be to wire in a O2 sensor simulator, that mimics the proper signal to the ECU, but some of these tricks may not work on newer models that utilize a wide-band oxygen sensor, but most older stuff for sure.

Ruining is a strong word. A clogged cat, even a severely clogged one, should only affect performance of the engine. OBD2 code p0420 doesn't necessarily mean your catalytic converter is bad. Actually your cat should never go bad and should last the lifetime of the engine. The only reason they ever need to be replaced is because there's a problem. Even if 🐈 is internally FUBAR, (clogged) you can just gut the 🐈 and weld it back on. This way is probably much easier but I sometimes you got to do things the hard way. LOL good stuff BTW

For those complaining that this causes smog, you have a point, but it's not as bad as you think. The CEL comes on when the cat drops to 95% efficiency which is a pretty high threshold. Spacing the O2 sensor back might stretch it to 90%, so just a little more smog in the air, not like it's a 1970's polluter. If you do this hack and it doesn't work, you've got other problems, a vacuum leak, leaky injector, bad coil, up to and including replacing the cat.

    • @stephenpowell6001
      @stephenpowell6001 6 років тому +2

A bad ignition coil was to blame for me. Cylinder misfire sends unburned fuel/air mixture right on to the cat. Coating it, making it less efficient. I am going to try cataclean, 91-93 octane gas, and a long trip on the interstate. If that don't work, I will try the oven cleaner in the O2 port hole. Then the spacers if them don't work. Before I buy a new cat.

On a 2001 Chevy Express van the O2 sensor is too big to fit into the non-fouler coupling, even after being drilled out with a 1/2 bit. I did this on my audi s4 with gutted cats, except I only used 1 adapter to get the sensor out of the stream. No code, like 2 years later. Also, what I think he's trying to say is that the upstream and downstream sensors look at the 'difference' of voltage between them to determine if the cat is not functioning properly. Obviously in my case, I had NO cats, and therefore the sensors would read the same voltage, meaning the computer can figure the cat is gone. On the flip side, if one sensor reads lower voltage and one reads much higher, the computer thinks the cat is clogged, or there is another problem. In some cases, it may be a bad sensor, like my truck with 300,000 miles. Don't totally rule out a failed cat, but usually they don't stop catalyzing, they crumble and clog. That leads to poor performance and terrible fuel economy. Plus, you should be able to hear your car struggling as it sounds like a prius when the cats are clogged. Not to mention the extremely high temps under your car, and possibly glowing exhaust tubes. You may even get lean/rich codes or other codes that are caused by a clogged exhaust but don't seem to make sense right away.

It worked for my 01 4.3L . But..... the 1/2" drill bit did not work. I had to get a 32nd" larger, and use a drill press to drill it out, leaving the wall of the adapter very very thin. So far so good though. In Atlanta, there is a serious debate about ending the emissions testing requirements. Only 4% ( as per a news cast I saw) of vehicles fail emissions, and our air is cleaner now than when there were far fewer cars on the road in the past. The old saying "they dont build them like they used to " does not hold totally true anymore. "They" are built better, cleaner, and more efficient than ever. Tax hawk groups are claiming the whole system is just a cash cow now, and has basically no effect on air quality. I would not be surprised if emissions requirements are ended here in metro Atlanta, and maybe other cities can follow.

Watch my video on this same subject. You don't need the washers, those are radio arresstors. They are to prevent the spark plug from interfering with your radio. If you were using the adaptors and washers, like they were used on spark plugs way back, they would help to avoid an RF static on the radio. You are not using them on spark plugs.
Also, you don't absolutely need to drill them out. I have one of these on my Altima for over 3 years now. Not drilled. No washer.

      What are you talking about

The adaptors in your video were originally made to prevent spark plugs from fouling with oil on worn out engines. The rings/washers were to prevent static interference on nearby radios and tvs. Of course these days that's not an issue. They also act as a seal for the plug. Or in this case the adaptor.
Does that answer your question? Or were you asking about something else?

those are washers to seal the non fouler!!! there are 2 types of spark plugs one type has a tapered seat that seals the plug and the other is flat and need the washer to seal the plug. has nothing to do with rf static.

Exactly Scott Prado, they are tapered seat seals. Because that model of non fouler is to fit tapered seats spark plugs hole
