Cinematography is all about controlling light. In this video I’ll take you through three of the most important camera settings that will allow you to control the amount of light that is let into the camera: ISO, shutter and aperture. This is sometimes called the exposure triangle.

Changing ISO also changes how the dynamic range is distributed - how much over middle gray and how much under. This is because for many digital cameras today, changing ISO doesn't actually change anything about the sensor, but simply multiplies the resulting digital values to appear brighter. Switching between ISO ranges (dual native iso) is an exception.
This means that when shooting outside, using a higer ISO can be beneficial as it'll force you to expose lower, thus maintaining more detail in the highlights. Conversely when shooting something in the dark, use a lower ISO, which makes you use other means - F-stop or just adding more light to compensate and thus have more detail in the shadows while maining the apparent exposure on-screen.

Hey Kaur, funny that I commented above then scrolled down and saw your comment. I pretty much said the same thing. Someone should start spreading the rumour that the Exposure triangle is an old photography lesson, that shouldn't be taught anymore.

😂I was literally about to comment the same thing. It's not really an exposure "triangle" is it? Especially since only 2 things actually control the amount of light captured on a sensor. ISO, as l understand it, only amplifies or attenuates the light data that's already collected by the sensor. It doesn't add or reduce the light itself.
I'm glad some people are aware of this.

ISO should never be part of any exposure discussion - it is not as described - it doesn't make the sensor more sensitive and is only similar to ASA in that higher numbers will be brighter. As many know ISO is an electronic gain that is applied after the sensor has captured the light. All exposure is in front of the sensor, not after it. In video the exposure is controlled by the light - add light to make things expose higher ( brighter ) and add ND filters or diffusion to block light. In front of the sensor - there are parts of the camera that will change the amount of light entering with Aperture being the number one obvious use of exposure. But as you kind of mentioned - it changes the look of the frame, as so does the shutter speed in motion changes the look of the motion in a moving image.
But ISO is not part of exposing. You can use a higher ISO to move the middle grey on the stops used to gain more detail in shadows ( lower ISO ) or more detail in highlights ( higher ISO ) but to raise a stop of light in ISO is just adding a gain on the back of it.
People should learn to use lighting to control exposure - the bad footage that we see everyday is a result of not understand that ISO is not part of the exposure triangle - which is an old still photograph term that needs to be not looked at when doing filmmaking - Sorry but I usually agree with most or your videos, but the research on this one could have been better.

True, and if you add the fact that most of the times you want the shutter fixed around 180° and that by changing iris you will also change depth of field, this means that for most scenes you can't really change anything in the triangle! This is why ND, flags, lights, bounces, etc are what really make the difference between very high quality and acceptable quality

Thank you so much for all your videos that you produce, your content is very helpful. However, about ISO sensibility, I've watch some videos about a french (I'm french) camera operator who said that ISO should not being one of the three parameters of the triangle of exposure. Because ISO sensibility modifies the dynamic of the captor, and add more or less noise, which can destroy the image quality. He replaced ISO by ND filter, which allows to control the amount of light within modifying the image's quality. What do you think about it ?
Still thx for all your content 🙏🙏

can you give me that link to this guy content? i do agree and also Arri does not have base ISO. this concept is made up to simplify things. camera has sensitivity in - EV and +EV and thats where those stops are equal in different iso it get more stops -EV then +EV but what dual thing how they call is cranked up by computation -ev = +ev like in venice. good dp will know what stops are for what conditions and will use them accordingly

How does it work in practice? Does it mean that the main 3 properties are most of the time set to their default values and the actual brightness controlled by the nd filter? Seems weird to have all this control, but not being able to use it.

" Higher the iso , more light will be taken in by the sensor " buzz , not correct , its electronic gain , its not more light , you don't usually want to be using shutter as an exposure tool either , I think you are mixing up stills with cinematography , this triangle doesn't exist in cinematography .

  • @shagral
    @shagral 8 місяців тому +3

I normally like your videos, but there is so much bad and straight up WRONG info here that breeds so many misunderstandings down the line.... Perpetuating the same old misconceptions, sigh.... ISO is not an exposure tool at all, it does NOT control light and it does NOT control the sensitivity of the sensor! Sensor sensitivity is fixed! (unless it's a dual ISO sensor) ISO is just a proxy for gain and it's the same thing as increasing it in post. It doesn't let in more light or make the sensor more sensitive to it!
ARRI doesn't "recommend" shooting at 800, it canNOT shoot at anything else. It's a single ISO camera. EI just controls the brightness on the viewing LUT to force over- or underexposure.
Only a madman would use shutter as an exposure tool. 99/100 times it stays at 180 degree (or 172.8 for 50hz lights).
Aperture is usually dictated by DoF considerations. So the real exposure triangle in cinematography would be Iris / ND / lights. And 9/10 times only 2 tools really used: ND and light. Either substract light or add light. Everything else is pretty much fixed.
You really should take this down and do some research first before putting out bad info and misleading people.

    That's sad...
