I succesfully converted my Acer 11" spin over to Cloudready (AUE is due to end in June) by _carefully_ following these instructions. My beloved 11" now has a new lease of life!
Where I work we have some of these chromebooks out on the shop floor. We didn't need them anymore so I grabbed one to clean up and install Cloudready for my daughter to use at home since she uses chromebooks at school. All the buttons work as they should, and nice she has something to do her homework on. Thank you!
THANK YOU!! I was working on this all night, and I ran into so many issues, one after the other, I'm SOO glad I found a super straight forward, newer tutorial with even the same laptop I downloaded it on! Couldn't have been a better tutorial
09/2021 and it worked without problems - great tutorial! Thank you so much Terry! Saved me from buying a new Chromebook as Prime Video and Spotify stopped working on my Acer C720 with stock ChromeOS. Now with Cloudready it all works again perfectly.
Fantastic tutorial. I converted my personal Acer C720 to Cloudready a while ago, and this video would have made it a lot easier. I haven't found another Chromebook that is as cheap as the Acer was, and a lot of Chromebooks being sold new are not even as fast as it. A great machine to keep using.
I have an Acer Chromebook c720 and I was able to install CloudReady without having to remove any screws. All I needed to do was go into developer mode, and do "sudo enable_dev_usb_boot" at the bash shell, plug in the boot USB drive, reboot, press Ctrl+U at the "OS verification is OFF" screen, then launch the installer as directed in the video.
This whole process works on a lenovo thinkcentre chromebox 10h5 except you have to push a tittle button on the back of the box with a pin or toothpick instead of the power button. Worked like a charm thanks
great video, did a Acer CB3-131 without any issues using above method - the screw inside this unit is the same flat style screw but is highlighted by a big arrow printed on the motherboard.
This worked perfectly! I had most of it figured out but didn't know about the screw on the motherboard. I was able to use this method to install either Cloudready or Linux Mint/ Ubuntu, etc. Thanks!
@@albertkinng the screw is a physical mechanism (like a switch) to ensure that the original firmware which helps the system boot can't be overwritten, by removing the screw you're giving yourself permission so that can be tampered with, in this case, for a good cause.
Some HP Chromebooks have a very teeny tiny micro switch instead of a screw. For those you have to take the keyboard off and the palm rest off to expose the micro switch. Then you just flip the switch the other direction and it becomes usable for cloud ready.
Very clear and helpful Terry, just what I was looking for having been given my first Chromebook (C720) in need of a move to cloudready! (I've tested CR on old hardware before and frequently rebuild windows machines for people etc but this video will be of great help to me for this c720 so thank you!)
I used your tutorial for installing cloudready on my Acer CB3-431 and it's great (apart from sound not working although bluetooth sound works). My question is: Why have you not produced more great videos like this one Terry?
It sounds like you have a Baytrail processor, which Cloud ready does not support. If you want sound other than Bluetooth, install Gallium OS (Baytrail version). I have been using it on all the older Baytrail Chromebooks we've been distributing.

ChromeOS Flex is something we used whenever we can on older Chrombooks, but there are some real older chromebooks that are Bay Trail and Braswell processors where the sound doesn't work. For those we use GalliumOS for that specific processor.

This is a great video for adding cloudready. Terry, at this stage do you think a future stable version of the new Chrome OS Flex could be installed on a chromebook using the same method?
@@terryscott3897 Thanks Terry. I have been using Bluetooth for sound and this works OK. I have enjoyed your latest videos and am tempted to try new OS. Welcome back.

Terry, I too have an "end-of-Life" chromebook the HP "G1" "Falco" (write screw removed) and have used this as a Linux "Hopper" (distro's) for a couple of years now, I just installed "Neverware" to version "92" (from "76" the last update) but I've found that I can't get into the "Linux Enviroment" in Settings it fails the attempt, not sure why? Any thoughts about this? I wonder if "Google" put some sort of "flag" to prevent "end-of-Life" owners getting the most from their "Dead" machines?
Sound problems are a problem on your model (Braswell -wiki.galliumos.org/Hardware_Compatibility). It will work fine if you install GalliumOS for Braswell.
Hi Terry. I tried to do. Your tuto is good and I followed it without difficulty. But at the moment when I boot and press ESC to access to the boot menu, I didn't see the USB Option. I tried to make the USB key with the Chromebook recovery and another one with the USB Maker on the CLoudready website on a windows device, without success. Have you got a idea, solution to be trying ?
If Dev Mode is disabled, then more that likely it is still register to a domain, probably as school. You can ask the school to "de-provision" your device, but I haven't had much luck with that.

it says " Failed to create the file firmware-util.sh : read-only file system." even though i have removed the write protection screw... and when i do flashrom --wp-status command it shows that its disabled. Help
The sound problem is probably because your Chromebook processor is a Baytrail family which is not supported by cloud ready. I would suggest you try installing gallium OS instead. It's pretty simple and usually produces sound for Bay trail processors.
