I just received mine from ebay assuming It had android google play support. It does not and also it won't play avi files. I distilled vlc which suppose to play any format, but not on this chromebook. It is a c720 2014 model am very disappointed. Didn't pay but 50.00 for it. Any suggestions and does the newer chromebooks have the same problem. I tried updating but it says it is updated already. Any suggestions anyone. Thanks for any help.

Thank you, your video was the only one that explains and provides all the information. Unfortunately my chromebook comes as a 16GB eMMC :( so, pull Mini Windows 10 for basic tasks and a USB to work my office files.

After changing the BIOS to UEFI (so you can install Linux or Windows), you can also install ChromeOS Flex. On my Chromebook which no longer received updates, I was able to install ChromeOS Flex, and it did continue to receive updates. That being said, Linux was more useful to me, so I installed Linux. My Chromebook's 'disk' storage was 32 gb, rather than the 16 gb of your machine, however. I don't know if ChromeOS Flex will work on the smaller drive, though it probably will.
another important thing to note is for people who want to install windows 7,8,8.1 or 10 and you have 16 GB of storage you can olnly run the official 32 bit versions of these OS's
however there are thing like tiny 7,tiny 8,tiny 10 and stuff so you can install those(i reccomend it)

I used GalliumOS years ago for a while but once you use Mrchromebox you can install anything you want. I have installed many different liunux distro's currently it is running Arch.
How was installing arch? I heard it’s incredibly hard to install

You can run windows 10 on a softmodded chromebook. You'll nead a usb 3.0 external hard drive (not thumb drive) and use rufus to make a Windows to Go external boot drive. Given the low ram, you should debloat windows 10.

Very nice video. It's funny. I went the other way around. After seeing a vid, on ExplainingComputers channel, I put Chrom OS Flex on a very old Laptop, works better than my tablet. It's always good to see what can be done with hardware and different OS's on them.

This video brings up so many unanswered questions! How do you use that recovery mode to erase something on the Chromebook? I've been using BalenaEtcher to do it on the PC. On many Chromebooks you can enter Developer mode just by selecting it in the Menu, not doing everything shown here. At 10:00 the CD command won't work and is an unknown command so you have to type Shell first! Also, at 11:40 how did you get to the Boot Menu since it's not a PC?
the cd; command returns you to your home directory on linux. Linux is case-sensitive. CD; will not work.
Those are all the steps. You have to do it to understand that is how it is set up for this Chromebook...
Hey mate, I'm trying to install the exact same way as yourself. However, I'm getting an error saying "failed; verify it contains a 64 bit UEFI OS" when I'm sticking in my USB. I've downloaded Budgie twice now, and confirmed it's an ISO file... Any ideas on what's wrong here?
Your CPU might be a x32 BIT only CPU. A quick google search of your PC CPU wouldn't hurt.
Try a different USB drive, try different flashing tools like baleena etcher, rufus, unetbootin. Make sure the iso you downloaded is in fact 64 bit. Press Esc to go into the bios menu and manually select the USB drive
i have checked the compatibility list for mine and am unsure of whether it is compatible due to there being a row of yellows w/ no info in the first two columns is there any proper way i can find out or anyone who has tried this on hp x360 14b-cb0004na

11:40 Even though I had a bootable USB in my USB port, I did not have an option to boot from USB. Everything else up to this point went exactly as your screen showed. I now have a brick if I can't get the computer to see the USB drive.
try to look up why your certain laptop is not recognizing the USB port, might be an underlying problem
restart the laptop should appear!!!

I've only had mine for a few days (an already old model from Amazon, and as is, it strikes me as a slightly more functional, but generally overhyped tablet, nowhere near actual laptop functionality.

@@TechnoDadLife Well I just did and for 150$. With just 1 click you activate Linux in the settings and all Linux app runs right away (you get best of both world at once). I am coding right now on that device with CLion and EMACS.

Been searching for a while and coming to the realization that my Chromebook was the wrong option, at least for now :/ The Gemini Lake processors are not supported at this time, which mine happens to be. I got it for dirt cheap at $99 brand new at Best Buy and it had nearly everything I wanted. Charges via USB Type C, 4 GB DDR4 RAM, 64 GB eMMC, and small form factor. Even more so now that I have a motorcycle, I was hoping to take this with me so I'd have a decent Linux machine but not worry if I ever fell off/crashed and the laptop was destroyed in the process, versus my MacBook or my more expensive Windows laptop.
Lenovo IdeaPad 3 11IGL05 in case anyone is curious. Not even listed on the wiki, but Gallium OS' dev has said that he has no plans to support Gemini Lake processors at this time, so do be aware if you are shopping for one. I should have done my homework. I assumed Chromebook just were like any other machine with a BIOS/UEFI capable of having another OS.

EDIT: GOT IT!! Anyone else want to know. Go to coolstar org (there is a period in there). It listed out my machine and what I needed to do. The instructions were not the greatest, so I had to read between the lines like when it said disconnect the battery. I disconnected and while still disconnected, plugged in USB power and started Chrome there and then followed the instructions. It ended up working and now I'm on a custom firmware!!! Downloading Ubuntu Budgie right now to try!!!
