    The reason why Blaine doesn't have a magmar on his team is because Ash had yet to battle against him in the anime when pokémon yellow was released, he had only six badges. Since that didn't happen yet, the devs just made Blaine's team the fully evolved fire types in the game.

      My assumption has always just been that the levels a Pokemon evolve at are a reflection of the skill of the trainer in raising that type of Pokemon. Player characters are generalist trainers, but true experts in a specific type (like say Flying Gym Leader or an Elite Four Dragon Master) will have their Pokemon evolve and learn powerful skills sooner.

    Some things about enemy move sets I wanted to add (sorry it being so long):
    So in Pokemon Red and Blue, the AI will actually always overwrite the THIRD move slot with the custom move (almost always the gym TM). This was likely to broadly not overwrite the "best" move from being overwritten, (although Sabrina actually overwrites Psychic with Psywave, oops), and it makes it so there is one routine that can be used on every Pokemon.
    This is done to every gym leader's ace, then every elite four member has a move added to their ace's third slot, (Blizzard to Lapras, Fissure to Machamp, Toxic to Gengar, Barrier to Dragonite).
    The only trainer with multiple Pokemon with custom moves is the champion, where the lead Pidgeot is given Sky Attack AND the starter is given Fire Blast/Blizzard/Mega Drain.
    Pokemon Yellow overhauls this and expands the overwriting to allow Pokemon to not only overwrite any move they want, but as many moves as they want. I won't list every change because many bosses have fully custom moves on multiple Pokemon as discussed in the video, but there are actually two cases of Pokemon Yellow adding moves to generic trainers:
    One is in Viridian Forest, where a Metapod is given tackle and string shot on one bug catcher. This is probably to just show the player that Metapod can learn other moves if they had not yet caught one.
    The other, which is far weirder, is a Youngster on Route 9 whose Sandshrew is given fissure. This one genuinely baffles me, especially considering how stingy they were with making use of this mechanic. The fact this is one of TWO CASES of adding custom moves to generic trainers and its this? I dunno. I guess its funny, so thats a good enough reason. (Edit: it is possible the intention was to add Earthquake, one index ABOVE Fissure, or Dig, one index BELOW Fissure. Obviously can't confirm though.)
    tldr Pokemon Yellow overhauled custom movesets on trainers and so a random Youngster runs Fissure on Sandshrew.
    For a more in depth explanation, check out the gamefaqs page on RBY AI, as that's where I learned all this and more. If you're interested in RBY, PLEASE check it out its a great resource.

      The Route 9 Sandshrew with Fissure is actually because of the Anime, in which a trainer with Sandshrew used the move, the Metapod in Viridian probably shares a similar story but I did not delve into that. Yellow was meant as an "Anime adaptation" of Red/Blue.

    Yellow version only released a month after the Blaine episode, so the production staff would have had no idea what his anime team would be!

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi Місяць тому +3

      That assumes the anime production staff didn't discuss with the game devs. But also, while that can explain Blaine and Giovanni being different from their anime counterparts, it's a stretch to say they changed gym leader teams to match their anime counterparts anyway. It's hard to judge and compare attacks and levels to the anime, and that's all that changed for Brock and Misty, they otherwise have the same teams as in Red and Blue. Surge drastically changes to match by just having Raichu, and Erika... Slightly changes to match by devolving Victreebel and Vileplume. Koga changes from 2 Koffing, a Muk, and a Weezing to 3 Venonat and a Venomoth, but in the anime he used one Venonat that evolved into Venomoth right away and used a Golbat he just doesn't have in Yellow. Similarly, Sabrina goes from Kadabra, Mr. Mime, Venomoth, and Alakazam to Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam, a significant change... That doesn't fully match her anime team, which is a single Abra that she evolves into a Kadabra in the middle of Ash's first battle with her. Even if we count the Abra as a reference to that evolution, she never had an Alakazam. So both Koga and Sabrina changed their teams quite a bit, but don't quite match their anime teams, despite the fact both appeared about a year before Yellow released (based on Japan releases for episodes and games).
      So 2 match without changing from Red and Blue, 2 change from Red and Blue without really matching, one changes drastically to match, and one changes slightly to match. And with a track record like that, Blaine and Giovanni not fully matching their anime counterparts still works for them to reference their anime teams. Blaine gains the Ninetales from his anime team, and his anime team included a Rhydon for some reason so of course that would be changed for the games anyway, just like how Koga doesn't have the Voltorb he was shown to have in the anime. Giovanni's team barely changes from Red and Blue, swapping his Rhyhorn for Persian, but he did give Jessie a Rhydon to use when she filled in for him, and it makes sense they wouldn't give him the Machamp he also gave her to use, the Kingler he used against Gary and gave her to use, or the Mewtwo he used against Gary. Blaine's changes look similar to Koga's changes in terms of referencing his anime team, and Giovanni's somewhere between Brock or Misty and Sabrina in terms of how the team changed.

    "Blaine doesn't have Magmar". There's a simple explanation for this: that episode didn't exist yet. Yellow was released on Sept 12. 1998. Volcanic Panic was released in August 20; which, yes, is earlier, but consider production time for the game, they simply had no anime to go off of yet. Sabrina and Koga were the last ones to be based on the anime, and their episodes were probably in production at the same time as Yellow.

Sabrina in the anime only used the abra, kadabra and alakazam team but Ash never got to alakazam and cheesed that gym badge later on. Brock's Onix I believe used Bind on Pikachu there hence why he has it in Yellow.

    There's a couple more references to the anime, like some random trainers mirror anime trainers

  • @Igorcastrochucre
    @Igorcastrochucre Місяць тому +4

    One relatively minor but cool change is that they changed some NPCs to have the same movesets as some characters of the day of the anime. The Giovanni battle was the last episode to air in Japan before the release, but I think they could only make it up to Koga which is why Blaine is different and certain major trainers like Ritchie do not appear because he came later.

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi Місяць тому +3

      Actually, the episode Battle For The Badge, where Gary gets creamed by Giovanni's Mewtwo, debuted 5 days *after* Yellow released in Japan. The most recent episode as of the release was Clefairy Tales, where Team Rocket fakes alien abductions.
      As for Blaine being different, while it did air only a month prior to the release of Yellow, thus too late to refer to, that actually assumes the anime production team and game devs didn't talk to each other about things. Anime episodes tend to take 2 months to produce, on average. And Blaine does suddenly gain a Ninetales, which he has in the anime but not in Red and Blue.
      Looking at the other characters, even Koga and Sabrina only slightly reference their anime teams, they don't match them like Surge or Erika (not counting Brock or Misty since their team compositions didn't change from Red and Blue and their moves don't seem to better reflect their anime gym battles). Just giving him a Ninetales still works as a reference to the anime, even if Magmar was the bigger deal.

    • @Igorcastrochucre
      @Igorcastrochucre Місяць тому +1

      @@Kahadi Yeah, but when you factor in they still needed to bug test and ship the game weeks prior to the launch, it really does add up they could only go up to Koga, because Blaine having Ninetales but not Magmar really looks like a shot in the dark because R/B treated his Arcanine as his ace. And even if Koga and Sabrina aren''t 1:1, the anime influence is still obvious.

    As someone who does solo Yellow challenge runs, I want to add some personal comments here as pertains specifically to solo challenge runs.
    #1 - When playing a solo run with a different starter Pokemon, you cannot obtain the Bulbasaur from the girl in Cerulean City, as it requires the starter Pikachu for the friendship check. Without having this Pikachu, there is no way to activate the triggers.
    #2 - Although most people often nab the Lapras in Silph Co for your Strength and Surf use, you can teach these same HM's to Squirtle as well. This is also helpful if you're using a weaker solo Pokemon, and Rival Fival brickwalls you, preventing you from obtaining Lapras for Surf/Strength. I usually grab the Squirtle to fulfill this need in my runs, however Lapras serves as a good backup in case you forget.

    Must say, I think you're wrong on a lot of the reasons why Yellow is less interesting or is easier. After watching Scott's Thoughts do hundreds of solo runs in yellow, there is a lot more places brute force or badge boost glitching won't carry a pokemon through, and some very interesting stratgies have emerged because of that. I think it makes Yellow a much more fun game to watch solo runs on than Red and Blue at this point.

    Very minor but interesting thing: this is the video where I discovered that JRose uses "less" when you're supposed to use "fewer."
    This is not a big deal at all, but I get slightly derailed when people do it.
    Less applies to things that can be thought of as a continuous amount of things, like water, sand, money. Fewer applies when you have discrete items that aren't part of a larger whole, such as books, encounters, or potions.
    "Brock poses less difficulty in Yellow."
    "Surge has fewer pokémon after all the demotions in Red and Blue."

      Funny I really never find mistakes on the distinction annoying, but I do find distinctions on "uninterested" (not interested; bored) and "disinterested" (not having a vested interest; unbiased) to be extremely so. People confusing one-word adjective/nouns (game setup, login portal) with their respective verbs (to set up the game, to log into the portal) is another one that grinds my gears. And my #1 one is when people use "anyways," which isn't a word. The correct word is "anyway."

Meant either electric got decimated or switching out to water would get sand-attack spammed at a speed disadvantage. Fun change for those first time play through.

    There's also some quirks in yellow version. In rock tunnel if you have Pikachu you can light up the tunnel thus making flash useless(even more than it already was). Also in terms of battles there's a few minor trainers with different moves such as the guy in Viridian forest who starts with a Metapod with harden and the trainer with the Sandshrew with fissure. As they were supposed to represent trainers from the anime. They also gave the champion eggeexcutor a fourth move as well as had the Sandshrew line to specifically counter Pikachu. And that Magneton can be a absolute menace if left unchecked. Also with better move coverage and higher levels, a lot less mons can minimum battles the game.

    Exeggutor with Leech Seed and Hypnosis into Magneton as a special wall with Thunder Wave into Cloyster as a physical wall with Clamp (Gen 1 trapping move mechanics) is a LOT of opportunity for Leech Seed to just drain your life away, especially with how well the two following mons can eat hits with that extra regen and is honestly a rare example of cross-mon synergy in a team.

  • @maxinoume
    @maxinoume Місяць тому

    Good stuff! I like how you compared the speed of the different runs instead of just listing the wiki differences.
    A bit of feedback: It was hard to follow at times because there were a lot of small changes like lvls and movesets. It could have been easier to follow if you had kept the same template for each difference like sometimes you said "blue first then yellow" and sometimes you said "yellow first then blue" so my brain could never anticipate or assimilate the information while you were saying it because I didn't know if you were talking about the old or new information.
    And it was similar for the visuals, you didn't always show old vs new stuff in the same order and there was no easy way to see which information you were showing us (having a yellow background for yellow content would have been nice instead of having to read the small word "Yellow" at the top of each screenshot). It would have been nice also to find a way to display the before/after movesets in the same screen.
    But anyway, it was interesting nonetheless.

    It was the first game you could walk beside your pokemon, and talk to them to see how they felt. From Pikachu not trusting you at the start, to being your best friend at the end, the game was ahead of it's time. In my opinion.

    It’s always funny to hear you talk about the oversight of always using super effective moves even if they’re status moves in red blue and yellow but after watching your sword and shield run the other day, they obviously haven’t made many adjustments. Watching all the fire Pokémon spam on centiskorch with flash fire was hilarious and ridiculous at the same time.

    I use Yellow version to do my solo runs because of the late game. I really enjoy the battles against Blaine, Giovanni and the E4 so much more than Red/Blue.
    The champion team is kinda cool for its cohesive strategy. The player most likely can’t one shot the Exeggutor so it can land a leech seed. Then he stalls with Fire Spin, Clamp or para with Thunder Wave. It’s a brutal gauntlet for solo Pokémon.
