Phenomenal car. The stick adds value, it'll last forever. 40+ mpg and everything is cheap to maintain/own. Great daily! 200k mi is considered low miles for these cars. This is the famous ALH motor. It'll last as long as you keep oil/timing belts on it. I had the 2004 with the BEW engine. It would tow my 1200lb boat and trailer and still get 30mpg. Only thing wrong with this one is it doesn't have steering wheel buttons. It's the base model, and I prefer my creature comforts. There is a cult following for these old TDI's. The newer generation with the 2.0L common rail engine were even better, but most were bought back due to the emissions scandal. Those cars were LEGENDARY.

TDI enthusiast here, you scored on that one. A manual 03 TDI is a rather sought after car. They have their typical VW quirks but the drive train in that car is SOLID. They are fantastic cars when treated well and will get fantastic MPG. That's a $3K car all day long.
    Few things:
    1. Timing belt, please do this ASAP. To be done right should be a complete kit with rollers and waterpump and requires lock down tools.
    2. The shaking could be a bad dual mass flywheel. Sounds like its rattling. There are single mass conversion kits available.
3.Check the injector pump for leaks, common for the seals to go bad. You can reseal them for about $15.
    4. Radiator fans go out all the time, make sure both spin when the AC is on.
    5. Use rotella T6 for oil.
    6. tdiclub is a great resource.
These cars have a following and there is plenty of information on the internet to fix them. They are really easy to make more power as well.

hi randy, Been driving diesels for 20 years including this engine. The shaking is a failing dual mass flywheel, only happens when it's hot and idleing i.e when the clutch is not engaged. Eventually you will get swarf in the starter and it will not engage. The dmf can be swapped out with single mass equivelent.

If you can help in the maintenance of your engine VW 1.9 tdi available because I'm already in my 4 VW model.
Change the oil for a semi-synthetic with the VW505 standard and the diesel filter do not forget to fill the filter with disel and to turn the key about 5 times before working them to not create air in the circuit.
Anti-gongelante uses with the standard G12 pink.

When the timing belt is replaced, the injector pump is dialed in mechanically and via VAGCOM. If gonna keep it...have a local TDI guru do the deluxe TB kit Also, fill the tank to the top of the neck (push the little vent tab to the inside of the neck while fueling), and you’ll see 700 miles per tank around town! They are fun cars to own and get great mileage no matter how you drive them!

*The 1.9 TDI engine here in Europe is considered to be the best modern diesel engine ever made.* These things are bulletproof if you give them a little bit off TLC. First, try to drain or burn the old diesel that's still in there. Then use some diesel injector cleaner. Also replace the oil, air filter and clean the ERG if you get an engine code for it. And try an Italian tune-up. It could clean the valves and ERG a bit. Also, don't drive the tank empty, this causes to get air in the diesel lines and then you have to bleed the system.
_Have fun with it, they do drive funny I have to admit. But it has a shit load off turbo lag_

Randy these 1.9tdi are bulletproof do not listen to anyone else who says anything different i've seen them with over 400,000 on them. They were deliberately used as taxis in Europe because they were so reliable it was like the crown vic in America. The taxi drivers didn't want to change their cars to newer ones as they would inevitably be less reliable.

It does need a service including the timing belt and water pump. Put in a can of engine flush to clean the oilways and then oil and filter, a can of fuel cleaner for the injectors and itshould be good to go. To reduce the engine noise, look for a cover for the top of the engine either on ebay or maybe your local car breaker. The fuel consumption will be very surprising and the car is very well put together. Enjoy!

The best thing you can do to a high mileage diesel. is give it a good clean internally! I mean the EGR valve, decarbonise the engine, (there's plenty of videos on YT to show you how! ) put some additive to the catalytic converter, put good fuel in it, change the oil with low SAPS. These cars love a good burn out on the highway to keep them clean!

Heres some things i will highly suggest for you as its gone past it 200K Marker, i would highly suggest you do that engine maintenance of Timing Belt, Water Pump, Aux Belt and pullys, i would highly suggest you change the Fuel Filter. Its very important to change these every 40K Miles to keep the injection system running efficiently. Also i'd just change that Coolant temperature sensor, its cheap oem part and worth the time for a Diesel as it helps the glow plugs.
Also pay attention to how fast it starts once the glow plug cycle light gos out, if it takes more then 1-2 seconds to start after the plug light turns off, your glow plugs are worn out. It shouldn't take more then one start cycle to start the vehicle.

Runs good, a little rough, but may be old diesel fuel because they tend to grow fungus if it's left in the tank for a long time without refills.

i would also check the injector harness in the engine bay, for a resistor or any wires spliced in for an evry mod, which tricks the computer and injector pump to push more fuel. which could cause the engine the shake like that.

Whats the engine code? if its an ALH you've struck gold. Good deal man, good beater or easy to flip. Its running rough, oil change and put some slightly thicker oil in it, may quiet it down a bit. 900 into it you're fine, sell as is for 1.5k or so!

That's a nice find. The ALH Motor of the 2000-2003 is the easiest to mod and most reliable. Also 200000k isn't that bad on those engines.
The body is great on it.
Just Change the windshield, scan and fix the little CEL fault.
Make sure the timing belt is good.
    Engine Mount?
There isn't much value on the car, however it's an amazing car to own to zip around town.
Do an ECU Tune to stage 1 and you will see a night and day performance gain.
If you want to be seriously impressed.
Upgrade the Injector Nozels to Power Plus
If your get a VNT17 Turbo
Do a better ECU Tune... you can easily push 150whp and 260tork.

An interesting direction for the VW would be a deep-friar oil conversion that also got into how to convert the deep-friar oil to usable engine fuel.
