- As an American I do not know much about David Attenborough besides the fact that he is a beloved British naturalist, broadcaster, presenter. Today I am very excited to learn more about him an enjoy 10 of the very best moments of his career. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
Sir David is like the nation’s grandpa, you thought we as a country were sad when the Queen died? We’ll be inconsolable when Sir David passes
As a nation we'll need 2 weeks of mourning
Absolutely, he is amazing.
It should be a national holiday. How can we go about our lives knowing he's gone? 😢
I am dreading the day he dies. Such a special man.
He has to live forever because we can never say goodbye to him.
David Attenborough is one of those people who's existence has actually made the world a better place.
Agree 100%. I wish there were more people like him.
Absolutely, hes spent his whole adult life warning about the environment and climate change. Its sad to see where we are after all that time.
Well said, 100% agree
Couldn't agree more.
Dam straight ❤
When he was Director of programming at the BBC, he also commissioned a little known programme called....
"Monty pythons flying circus"
He is also responsible for bringing colour tv to the UK by commisioning the first colour tv programme broadcast in Europe . In front of & behind the cameras he is a legend .
When tennis was being shown on TV sports, he had the then white balls coloured yellow to show up better on colour TVs. now all tennis balls are yellow.
I didn't know he was responsible for that. Thanks 🙂
also, he and his teams are mostly responsible for HD TV due to the smaller and better cameras they had to come up with to use.
He is also the only person to win BAFTAs for programmes made in black and white, colour, 3D, 4K and VR, thats quite an achievement 😀
wait what is this all true. holy shit the mans a bigger legend than i thought. what.a.bloody.legend
My wife was a book buyer for WH Smith (Tyler, a retail book store throughout the U.K.). She had to arrange book signing sessions for major authors and celebrities in their stores. Some of these people were very difficult to deal with and demanded all sorts of things and exotic food for lunch. Quite frankly most were completely obnoxious at times. But she loved dealing with David as he was so easy and down to earth. He had no stipulations and mucked in and always eat lunch (usually just a cheese sandwich and a coffee) in the staff canteen with everyone else including my wife.
He did live in Richmond, nice part of South West London by the river, don’t know if he does now. She once had to arrange a signing session for him in a South East London store and she rang him direct (not through PAs, publishers, managers like others) and asked him if she could reserve a parking space in the public car park for his car. This was a few days after she had to prebook 6 parking spaces for a “celebrity “ and her entourage. He said there was no need as he was going to cycle there but could he park his bike in store. It must be a distance of 15 miles through heavy south London traffic and he must have been well over 70 at the time. A living legend and I will openly cry when I hear he has past away, although the way he is going he will outlive me.
Yes, he lives by the park and he is so friendly with the locals and happy to chat to everyone
he does not drive uses public transport or his bike,
I'm also from Richmond and did a charity event with David Attenborough. Fantastic experience.
I have several of his books, all signed.
Not just a national treasure here in England, but a GLOBAL treasure.
He’s had more lifetimes than a thousand of the rest of us.
His achievements are staggering, and he genuinely cares.
Most recognisable voice on the planet.
I've got that (quite old) meme of a single-decker bus "head down" off a raised road, into a small stream, as the wallpaper on my Tablet and the caption states:
"...and here we have a wild bus drinking from a stream..." (Of course, I hear Sir David's voice narrating it every time I see it... Even though I had to 'crop' the pic, so the words don't show on the screen, I still hear _that_ voice saying _those_ words !! 😊) ❤️🖖
@@brigidsingleton1596I read that sentence in his voice 😅
@@brigidsingleton1596❤
There is not many living or dead that has done so much for conservation and education of the natural world as David Attenborough. He loves what he does and that comes through his voice on videos and his words in his books.
One of the very few living people to have had an RN ship named after them. The RV Sir David Attenborough. Boaty McBoatface is one of the submersibles aboard it.
I am from Denmark and since I was a small child, I have watched David Attenborough. This was how I learned about animals and nature. I understod early, that animals eat each other and that every species are important and interesting. After millions of years, everything has a special place, every tree, animal, insect etc. are working together, in some form. This planet is heaven, so it is sad, that we are killing it. Just his voice, makes me feel like home 💜
I'm a Norwegian, and I became a biologist due to him.
He inspired me to become a naturalist.
His brother was a famous actor and director - like the first Jurassic Park film (played Hammond in the movie) and directed "Ghandi". Sir David is a national treasure.
Richard Samuel Attenborough CBE.
Yes, Richard "Dickie" Attenborough was a legend too.
Don't forget he's THE Santa. My all time favourite Christmas movie ❤️
Richard lost his daughter and granddaughter in the tsunami in 2004
Lord Richard Attenborough, best Santa ever
David Attenborough is amazing. If you write to him, he WILL write back to you. He’s so humble. 😊
My daughter wrote to him when she was still in primary school, and he wrote back thanking her and explaining that he was unfortunately too busy to come and have dinner with us! My daughter is now at university studying marine biology...
@@elvwood that’s amazing! He’s obviously has had an impact on her ☺️
I watched his programmes from a child. They increased my love for nature. I ended up with a degree in Biology.
I wrote to him to thank him for his work and how much it influenced me.
I also got a hand written letter from him thanking me for the recommendation of his work.
Always wanted to have a drink and chat with him, but how do you write to him??
@@peterparker35 his address is a Google search away.
His reply’s are hand written too. ☺️
He has done groundbreaking work throughout his years. Been watching him since the 1950s. Legend.
what the fraud he recently done, government puppet do anything for a big payout before he dies
I'm rarely envious of people, but what a life he's led and what an incredible man he is
He is one of those rare people in the UK (maybe he's the only one) that is beloved by all. No matter our age, race or political alignment, we can all agree that Sir David is amazing.
Andy Bradbury was, also, liked by everyone he met though nor as much as this absolute Legend.
One of the reasons David with the gorillas was so incredibly special was because he showed their soft side. The general public thought of gorillas at the time as big aggressive animals. David showed us how much like us they are. For people watching on tvs at home, it was a bit shocking to see him so close with them.
David Attenborough is the very definition of National Treasure. When his time comes he will be mourned as universally as Queen Elizabeth was. I have been watching him on TV since the 1970s, and he very much reminds me of my late father. Incidentally, my father and he shared a godfather as their parents moved in similar circles. David's older brother was Sir Richard Attenborough the well known actor.
Sir Richard was later made a peer, President of BAFTA at the time and up to his death. Lord Attenborough was often seen in a Baron's robe at the State Opening of Parliament. Wonder if Sir David has ever been offered one, if not well overdue.
With most people who are given this moniker you will find some people who would dispute it.
With Sir David however I'm willing to bet you couldn't find a single person to protest.
He'll be mourned much more, a lot of us didn't mourn for the queen.
@@Kazza_8240 the "best of" tribute shows will be infinitely better when it does happen as well (hopefully a few more years off yet though)
@@lesterbottomley7641 I will bet you £10,000 that I could find someone and, although,I am nearly tearful just at the prospect of losing him,I will protest just to get the £10,000😀
He is the voice of at least 2 generations life he's been the father, uncle and grandfather of our nation. A calming voice indeed.
Many years ago, I helped erect a marquee for an event to be held in his stunning garden, near Kew, London. Completely unexpectedly, but typical of the man, he appeared bearing an ornate silver tray loaded with tea and cakes for the crew. An absolutely lovely man.
Without any exageration he is one of the greatest Britons of the 20th/21st Century
Britons
We all grew up watching him and the great thing is, he still speaks to all of us as adults, because he never talked down to anyone but also always explained things so they could be understood.
He also wrote an older childs version of the book. 'Life on Earth' to complement the series in the 70s. It was called 'Discovering Life on Earth' and I still have it. I used it once to prove what an Aye-aye (lemur ) was.
While (I believe) that American TV is far more likely to pick up a series presented by someone more sensational like Steve Irwin, David Attenborough has been THE nature presenter for the UK going back way before I was born. I think it was his quiet, gentle manner of speech, his obvious fascination with nature and depth of knowledge that made him popular with people from all walks of life in the UK. He has kept his image apolitical as far as I am aware and unlike the majority of public figures from my childhood, he has not been found to have a broom closet full of skeletons so packed full that it is compressed to a greater density than the core of the sun - I think he was just too busy making high quality nature documentaries and writing books.
Yes, he doesn't do the wizzy sensational style shows, and that is part of why he is so loved. His calm, informed respect for the planet.
He has been careful with his political views, but I don't think it's hard to take a guess based on his priorities. But I love the fact he has never fallen into making science and climate change a political matter, like so many people do nowadays. It is just an issue that we all need to care about no matter your leaning. Class act.
I love David Attenborough, and he stands alone as the greatest nature documentarian of all time.
But I reckon even he may have taken on a slightly more frantic & excited tone, if he were jumping on the backs of saltwater crocodiles.
Steve is just another kind of legend, as I’m sure Dave would agree. 🐊
You should see when Sir David Attenborough met the Queen. They go for a walk around the garden of Buckingham Palace. For me it's priceless.
And both completely at ease with each other.
Well they had met many times before...he produced her Christmas messages between 86 and 92. She knighted him in 85 and they met at numerous functions and ceremonies.
His brother Richard was a very famous Actor and Director. Not only did he direct the multi Oscar winning movie Gandhi but he was also the old man who brought the dinosaurs back in Jurassic Park but he was also Kriss Kringle in the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street.
David Attenborough is unique, brilliant and an international treasure. We know so much about the planet and wildlife because he went out and filmed it, in a career going back more than 70 years. Legend.
I've met Mountain Gorillas, and I absolutely went because of Sir David! That programme, that's what hauled me all the way from Wales to Uganda. He's a wonderful man, a National Treasure who must be protected at all costs!
He wouldn’t be happy with your carbon footprint for doing that, he gel*fes only a select few can do these things now,
He is bebeloved in South Africa ❤
Attenborough is an absolute legend shows absolute respect for all the animals he meets
David Attenborough is responsible for nature documentaries as we know them. He pretty much developed the genre.
He also has been recorded in more television formats than anyone else on Earth.
By the time he made 'Life on Earth' in the early 1970s he was a legend, having made documentaries on location since the mid 50s.
It was actually first broadcast on 16 January 1979.
A friend of mine used to work on the BBC nature magazine so had semi regular contact with him. Not surprisingly he said he's just the same as he seems on nature programmes and interviews. Top bloke
He would have to have over 1000 world firsts under his belt! You could play these short clips constantly non stop for a year and never see the same clip twice. Respect Sir David Attenborough. What a Boss🤘
He is pretty much loved here in Sweden too.
I think this shows a difference between UK and US cultures. Most narrators in the UK and experts in their field, brought in to talk about it, whereas, in the US they get famous people to talk about it.
Sir David is an international treasure. I grew up with his nature documentaries in the 90's and I really think world is a better place with him in it.
It's a shame he won't get his letter from the Queen, but hopefully he makes it to 100 to get one from the King.
Thank you Tyler ✨💝🌹
I'm 76, but I remember watching David Attenborough's TV documentaries as a child in the UK. I'm still just as enthralled today by his wonderful work. Thankyou for reacting to this great video.
Yes, the old black and white tv programmes of him tromping aroun Africa.
Sir David is an inspirational, educational treasure!
He is a gift to this planet 🌍🌎🌏 ..which will pause when he leaves.
✌️❤️ 🇦🇺
He was probably the voice I heard the most as a child. Out of every celebrity in the world, I would choose to meet him, so I could thank him. I think I'll cry like I lost my own grandfather when he dies, because of how much his documentaries have inspired me in my life; with the sheer wonder of the natural world.
And he is absolutely more than just a narrator. He started as a geologist, then became fascinated with fossils, then got a job with the BBC, and became and explorer. He was given Britain's second ever TV channel, BBC2, to manage, where he even contributed to sport; he is the reason tennis balls are yellow, because the old balls they used didn't show up so well on black and white television. And then he quit management and went back to talking about animals and exploring, even a little bit now still even though he's 97. It's said that he may have seen more of the world than any person alive today. He is a national treasure and an inspiration.
I grew up watching David Attenborough's wildlife programmes and his brother Richard Attenborough ( the actor's ) movies.
Back in 1982 when I was a kid I collected autographs. I wrote to Sir David asking if he could send me a signed photo. A week later I got a response from him. He sent me a personal letter in the most beautiful handwriting where he apologised for not having any photos to send me, but asked if this letter was good enough. I already loved him and that he would take time out to write to me just cemented his place in my heart. An absolute gentleman and legend.
I’m portuguese and I grew up watching his shows.
That is really interesting to know :) Nice to hear he is loved there too
Attenborough's a living legend and a British national treasure. He's been a popular TV show host since the late 1950s - writing and researching his own material - and is still going strong at the age of 97. David's not just knighted, he's an OM (order of Merit) and CH (Companion of Honour), two very restricted orders of chivalry restricted to only about 30 people each. My dad met him on a plane to West Africa in the early 1960s and showed him around Lagos.
David Attenborough (pronunciation is Attenburrah) is an absolute legend in his own time! What an amazing man!
THANK YOU! It shouldn't bother me as much as it does but when videos pronounce his name 'Attenburrah' but Americans still say 'Attenborrow' it really grinds my gears (I know, I need a hobby 😅)
@@sparklypeanuts LOL you and me both! I 😅
David Attenborough is amazing. The wolf howling is the one thing that's pretty standard though, if you howl with wolves they will typically join in, they love a good howl-along 😆🥰
I cant watch any natural documentary that he doesn't narrate, his commentary is gold! you can feel his love for Nature!
The Gorilla clip is brilliant and iconic. Though I was surprised they didn't include the clip of a bird mimicking things such as car alarms.
Must be the lyrebird- an Aussie native - they can mimic any sound from their environment including car alarms, babies crying, bird calls, video games, chainsaws, human voices ..
I was half expecting the clip when he called out the queen on the sun dial. It was just genuinely sweet and funny from both of them.
That's my favourite too.
He is a great friend of the Royal Family as he has the same ideals as them for the planet and wildlife. We were all brought up with him in our lives and avidly watched anything he was in.
He's one of the few things we're still proud of in the UK.
I think that this must be one of your best reaction videos you've made. Sir David Attenborough, who's brother was the actor / director Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park, Gandhi, etc,) , first appeared on UK TV when the BBC was one of the few channels available for us to watch so he quickly became a household name. I think at the time any presenter would need to be an expert in the type of programs they appeared on and would be expected to go out into the field when filming. With Sir David being so good and knowledgeable at what he does is why he's still the number one at wild life shows and is so loved in the UK. I also think that now he's 97, and although still clearly capable, he is probably doing more narration than being out actually in the field. It is also worth watching the Mountain Gorillas "Life on Earth" episode in full if you can, it is amazing.
Sir David is an absolute gift to this planet. His contribution to conservation and raising awareness amongst the general public about our natural world can never be understated. A wonderful man and an absolute national treasure. I count myself so lucky to have been able to grow up watching his documentaries, some of the best memories of my childhood.
his brother is Richard Attenborough who is a movie star one the most famous movies his brother was in was "jurassic park" the first one
An oscar winning director, surely? Gandhi, anyone?
He was also in the Great Escape...
what a wonderful human being. This is the man supporting Pr.William in the Earthshot Inititiative. This is why we can all get fully behind that inititiative.
When David Attenborough trends on social media, we rush to see why and every subsequent post says thank god he's still with us! He is truly and deservedly loved over here.
You have to realise that in the uk, pretty much everyone has grown up with this man their entire lives.. He is family to all of us. I can’t even think about him passing as I will cry and I’m in a truck stop diner right now.
He's beloved in Australia as well.
David Attenborough is highly successful and a national treasure, as was his brother Sir Richard Attenborough, who was a well known and successful actor,/director staring in some classic fils such as, Jurassic Park, Brighton Rock and 10 Rillington Place and directing Ghandi. A very prolific and talented family.
His brother's title was Lord Attenborough.
The Great Escape
When you watch an Attenborough documentary don't miss the part at the end where they show how the filming was done. His crew are the world's best.
And he never fails to heap praise on them...its never all about him.
When i was a kid and Life on earth was on TV from start to finish i never took my eyes off the screen the man's a legend.
We love him in Australia as well.
The amazing quality of Sir David Attenborough's many wildlife documentaries is incredible. Many have been filmed in full 4k, even before 4k TVs were widely available and the quality of the photography is jaw dropping. Sir David and the specialist natural history unit team at the BBC go to extraordinary lengths to capture incredible scenes in exquisite detail. He along with King Charles III when he was Prince of Wales were among the very first in the world to champion the protection of wildlife and habitats. His Knighthood is very well deserved.
Attenborough's enthusiasm is infectious. It made you want to watch whatever he was doing. In the 80's, his blockbuster natural history series Life on Earth was a breakthrough in the visual presentation of natural history programmes. A sequel was The Living Planet which Tyler mentions.
Not sure if you know that David also had a very famous older brother, the celebrated English movie actor and director Richard Attenborough, who passed away in 2014, aged 90 years.Richard Attenborough had many theatrical, TV and movie roles in a long acting career, though he is probably best known today for his appearances in The Great Escape and Spielberg's Jurassic Park. He is also well known for his successful directorial career, with his most famous productions being the epic movies Ghandi and A Bridge Too Far. What a talented pair the Attenborough brothers were.
He is our National Treasure ❤
Sir David, is a national treasure to the UK, we have all grown up with him narrating nature documentaries but also going out and spending time with these animals. it will be a sad day when he passes away. i for one will morn for months. i love this man and hope he is actually immortal
He has spent his entire life studying nature around the world. He probably has the best first hand knowledge (over 70 years) about the complexity of nature and how it is impacted by humans than anyone else on the planet. His dedication to mastery of the natural world and passion along with his narration voice and his incredible knowledge and compassion make him completely irreplaceable. As a species, we stand so much to gain from his knowledge of the environment as he has done the research and provided all the information for a better future. How we cope in the future will be down to whether we take it on board or just ignore it and carry on as we do
I'm nearing 60 and I remember watching David Attenborough documentaries when I was a kid which were made years before I was born. An incredible man.
It's interesting to see an American that doesn't know about Sir David. Everyone in every country of the UK has grown up with his teachings about the world and animals, alongside climate change. He has revisited many places 50 years later and show the impact of the climate so he's a very unique individual.
I dare say that outside of the UK, noobe would have a clue how revered he is.
Not just his documentaries, but his time as controller at bbc2, colour TV, several hit shows that he commissioned, starting great careers for others, improvements to filming techniques and qualities.
His entire lifetime contains amazing and ground-breaking moments and decisions.
The guy is more than legend, he is a world-wide Demi-God.
We just adore this man.
He also ran half of BBC TV for many years - a man of many talents - a true legend.
and produced the Queens Christmas speech for a few years.
Sir Attenborough is a national treasure with a voice that makes you feel like you were painted by Bob Ross.
When people ask that question," if you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, who would you choose?" - Sir David is always and forever my No. 1 choice. ❤
David’s voice is one of the most calming sounds there is
He is great but he has a talent that his brother Richard Attenborough had as a film actor in the many films his brother made. Between them they had a gift which has enthralled us all. David knows how to talk and react with animals.he is the real Dr Doolittle.
Been watching him for 69 years and counting...🇬🇧
Legend.
Sir David Attenborough isn't just a British national treasure, he is an icon, a legend and every great name you could call someone, he made a massively successful career from his hobby of being a naturalist when he was young, he is absolutely amazing, and if there's something about the natural world that he doesn't know about, then it's simply not worth knowing. Being 97 now, there can't be too long left of his life, it will be a very sad day when he passes away but hopefully he will live to be at least 100 years of age
He's 97 & still doing this, he's never retired. Anyone who grew up with english tv (So, English, Australian, Canadian) when ever we think of any piece of info about animals, we automatically hear his voice. Because he is so passionate on the subject & on educating the general pubic, he is beloved. And yes, he does voice overs, but very often is onsite. The one where he's with the gorilla's cemented him as the unofficial saint of naturalism.
He's an absolute legend
you cant help but smile when watching Sir David
Sir David is a national treasure, people have grown up with him on prime time tv. Some of my favorite are the 🥚, the gorillas and the whole series of blue planet documentaries. Plus his walk around the Queen's garden with the Queen.
A friend of mine worked on Marion island for a year. During that time, Sir David was filming there. He left a parka behind which she claimed. It’s her most treasured possession.
I think he started in the 50s when he was in the team of an animal program but the regular guy couldn’t do it so they got David to step in being a naturalist for the team and was so successful the rest is history !!! He went all over the world for the filming of possibly all the shows he stared in. There were not only animals, birds, fish, plants and the natural world in general, he has become a national treasure and he didn’t force anything he just was, so natural!
He has a great sense of humour. I have seen many interviews over the years.
Hes taught generation after generation all about the planet and all its inhabitants. Mans a legend
I grew up with Sir David Attenborough. As an animal lover, he was my hero as for many other Brits. So many afternoons watching his films and much laughter too.
For reasons unfathomable to all sane humans his narration for 'Frozen Planet' was replaced with Alec Baldwin in the US version.
And Oprah did 'Life' - when will the madness end?
Give them time, and they’ll claim it was all THEIR production.
Enigma Calder springs to mind.
*ENIGMA
bloody autocorrect.
I cannot remember a time when there was no David Attenborough (and I'm 74). I was so glad you enjoyed the video and I loved your reactions. He's truly a national treasure.
Attenborough is actually pronounced Attenbra. His brother was the late actor Richard Attenborough who appeared in lots of big films including the black and white version of Miracle on 34th street which is the best version of the best Christmas film ever. He has also been interviewed by Princess Charlotte.
Was the remake not original
@@templarpg lol : D
Are you thinking of the Maureen O'Hara film of Miracle on 34th Street? He wasn't in that. But I agree it's the best version 😊
Or Atten- buh- ra
I loved how much you enjoyed David Attenborough imagine how much we love him when we've all grown up watching his amazing documentaries ❤️
I used to have a bunch of his stuff on dvd when I was little and would fall asleep to his narration. He has such a calming voice. Nowadays, if I'm watching a nature documentary I get a bit surprised if he isn't doing the narration 😅
My 17yr old daughter when she could talk every time. She would shout David Attenborough. She still does. Legend.
I watched David Attenborough (along with some other naturalists as Jacques Cousteau, Armand & Michaela Denis and Hans & Lotte Hass) effectively invent the art of TV wildlife filming in the 1950s as he travelled to places like West Africa and Komodo in Indonesia to film animals in their natural habitat. He has been going strong ever since, even spending a few years as Head of the BBC along the way. A true legend. If the position of President of the World existed, he would have held it!
I'm British and I'm an animal behaviourist and trainer , just started my masters in animal behaviour and welfare too. Sir David Attenborough is without a doubt one of the reasons I went into this field, and many people who are in this field. I remember watching his documentaries my whole life and still whenever I'm feeling ill or down I'll put on life of mammals or blue planet or the hunt or any one of his documentaries. I am absolutely dreaded him no longer being here, immortality for this man if there was a choice
There should be a petition passed to our Creator to spare Sir David as can you imagine all that knowledge that departs this Planet Earth when he does?
I used to watch nothing other than David Attenborough documentarys and when he came to Glastonbury and talked on the pyramid stage it was one of the only times that I was there the whole day just so i could see him up close (or closer than being at the top of the field at least)
One special trick with Sir David's documentaries for the BBC is they always have a ten-minute segment at the end documenting the documentary itself.
1:55 You’d need to live several life times to accomplish what he’s accomplished. Absolutely love him. ❤
Sir David is well known and loved around the world. Many of us have adored his life works and grew up watching him educate us. I'm 69 years old, and his work spans more than my whole life. Maybe only
people in the United States of America are unaware.
Sir David has most likely been the most prolific scientist in the modern world. He has contributed so much to the scientific community, possibly the most ever. One of the most wonderful experiences of my entire life was a midnight wolf howl. I live in Canada and my howl took place in Northern Ontario but not too far from humanity. We took a wonderful horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy woods and responded to the almost continuous wolf howls. They responded to our howls too, which was absolutely thrilling I highly recommend you try this experience at least once in your life.
I once met him when he was in his 40s..what a good looking man.. full of easy genuine charm and manners and those blue eyes! I was in my 20s and a gonner. lol.
He’s a legend. He is also the brother of Richard Attenborough, the actor and director, who is sadly no longer with us. So much talent and hard work in one family. To us, he is bigger and better than any Hollywood star. ❤
I don't think there is one person in the entire planet that doesn't love Sir David Attenborough, and that in itself speaks volumes about this wonderful utterly brilliant men.
