    One of the first things I read/learned was not to add FX or processing (including EQ) because you feel it should be there, add it because it needs it.

    I noticed the older engineers keep it so simple and achieve the same great results.

    I subscribed bro we need that vocal chain 🔥🔥 he use rcomp and the Fairchild as his main two compressors on vocals and I always wanted to know how many dbs does he compress between those two

    • @fl7210
      @fl7210 Рік тому +5

      Imo, I’d doubt that he’s getting any more than like 4 db of gain reduction at any given time on any one compressor. He’s mixing the vocals based on the sound and detail rather than aiming for a specific reduction… some vocalists might require more to get the tone he likes, others might not need much at all.
      Just sharing a tip… before you start to think about compressing, it’s a good idea to manually adjust the levels of the vocal performance. You can do this by splitting the clips up word by word or phrase by phrase, and then go and adjust the individual clip gains. Or you can draw level automation with a utility plugin (“trim” in pro tools).
      This way the vocal has a nice consistent level between phrases and words even before compression. A great singer will do this on their own just in the way they sing… if you ever see someone bringing the mic close to their face for some parts and then pull it away for others, that does the same thing. Drawing it in is just a way to do it on the engineer side of things rather than the performance.
      This is good bc it means you’re not relying on the compressor to level it all out, and you’re just using the compressor to bring out the detail of the individual words and package it up nicely to fit within the mix.
      Otherwise you can end up with “this compression setting sounds good on one phrase, but it sounds bad on this other phrase”… by manually balancing them before you compress, you make the same setting work for both.
      After you do the pre-compression leveling, and then the compression itself, you might also want to draw in some automation of the compressor’s output to bring out phrases in the performance… now that you’ve made it all consistent, automating the level after compression will help to keep the vocal feeling dynamic instead of “flat”… but dynamic in a controlled way, bc you have the consistency that keeps it tidy.
      👍

    I wonder does he ever have to side chain the kick and 808/bass...most ppl always say it eats up alot of headroom in the mix if you dont but ive never seen him messing with side chaining anything.....

      he’s not use any sidechain for kick and bass

    • @TylerAlan24

      As a mix engineer who works primarily in hip hop, I can tell you that I haven't side chained a kick to an 808 a single time in the last at least 100 mixes I've done. All you need is a good kick sample and a good 808 sample and to level them properly

    • @royalinvasionproductionstv6370

      @@TylerAlan24 when you say level them properly, do you mean volume wise? Also tuning them both would probably apply here as well right? Sorry I'm no pro but try a learn what I can to make things as easy as possible....

    • @TylerAlan24
      @TylerAlan24 7 місяців тому +2

      @@royalinvasionproductionstv6370 yeah volume like the best way to make sure your kick and 808 aren't clashing (assuming they're good samples) is setting them at the right volumes. Kick isnt hitting hard enough? Turn it up. 808 is hitting too hard? Turn it down

      Most of the time a side chain is not needed unless you’re doing edm or techno. It doesn’t hurt to use it tho, besides it just being another step in your process.

    • @kbmadethatshit6364
      @kbmadethatshit6364 Рік тому +3

      in most cases sidechaining the kick to the 808 will do you more harm then good believe it or not, if the phase of both kick and 808 is good they should sound cohesive just from that already, if the kick and 808 don't sound good at all together don't go trying to sidechain shit to try and make it better, it won't work, just change the kick/808 sample for a better fitting one.

    I think it sounds bad personally. Kick sounds boxy, bass is too dull, doesnt cut through small speakers. 808 is inaudible. Cant see this lending itself to a loud master. To each their own I guess

    The audio is like 20 db to low compared to leslies voice mic. Listening in my treated studio with subwoofer
