  • Oral Lowery has made well over 2000 ropes, all by hand. He knows the secret of rope making. In 1930 he and his wife Ruth bought their dairy farm in Hebron, Ohio. With 200 acres, 4 horses and 27 cows they needed lots of rope, so they made them. His record is 85 ropes in one day. This is the traditional way, long lengths of twine are twisted and then gathered and twisted again. The machinery isn't fancy, but it works. Today, rope making is an endangered craft. New technology and materials have transformed a common skill in most American farms into a curiosity. Call it traditional, old time, old fashioned or an endangered craft … but it is a skill this a is an important part of our heritage.

Let me tip you off about the story I'll post tomorrow. The story is about one of the last rolling stores in Alabama. For decades they were a big part of the rural south but by 1973 there were only 2-3 left. I hope you will check it out.
