The Original Georgia Traveler - Andy Johnston
United States
Приєднався 25 жов 2019
Meet amazing people and share their incredible stories and talents. The Original Georgia Traveler roamed the country and showcased the people of America.. These are the best of the best.
In the 1970s I had the best job in television. I traveled Georgia and the southeast for WSB-TV in Atlanta meeting people and sharing their amazing stories and talents. I was the original Georgia Traveler. Over that time we did over 1200 stories and sadly most of them have been lost. In 2018 I discovered boxes of ancient video tapes with over 100 stories. The stories are exactly as they were aired on Action News in the 1970s. You will be amazed by the unique story each person has to share. I plan to post as many of them as I can.
Just to keep the history straight, Before I came to WSB-tv I was the Tennessee Traveler for WLAC (now WTVF-TV) in Nashville. I discovered a few of those stories and I will be sharing them when I can.

What Is The Country Bonnet Maker's Secret? Mischief Keeps Her Young #sewing #diy
You might think that sewing is a bonnet maker’s biggest challenge, but it isn’t. It’s your attitude. So, what is the country bonnet maker's secret? Mischief keeps her young. Hattie Canter spends a lot of time at her sewing machine. Years ago, she wanted a new bonnet but couldn’t find a pattern, So Hattie took an old bonnet from the 1920s, cut it apart and it became her pattern. That was many, many hats ago. Some people call them Colonial, Pioneer or Prairie styles. Hattie Canter makes a classic Southern Bonnet. They are stylish, comfortable and made to be worn. The fabric is odds and ends and empty flour sacks. The lining is old bed sheets. When I watched her working, she smiled, grinned and laughed to herself. Hattie has one of those infectious smiles because, as she told me, “I have mischief in my soul.” Mischief keeps her young. When I asked what kind of mischief she elbowed me and said, “I don’t tell people because they would be embarrassed.” Hattie Canter's bonnet making secret is simple … just be happy and have fun. I guess it's the power of a positive mental attitude. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975.

For over 100 years kids and adults have headed straight to the Sunday Funnies … the comic section of the newspaper. There was humor, adventure and excitement spread over pages of colorful comic strips. Bob Murphy never lost that excitement. He start...

A small town railroad depot was one of the most important in the USA. Chatsworth is a small town in north Georgia. In 1905 the town had about 200 people but it had a new depot on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. By 1975 the little depot played a crucial role because Chatsworth was the only intermediate freight depot between Cincinnati and Atlanta. It managed the traffic on a 500 mile stretc...

The amazing coincidence for the soldier on the D-Day Life Magazine cover is incredible. The soldier was Kelso Horne and this story is about the totally unexpected way he became famous twice. Here’s a quick setup for anyone who isn’t from Georgia. John Pruitt was, in my opinion, the best TV news anchor in Atlanta. His career spanned 46 years at WSB-TV and WXIA-TV. In 1974 WSB created an advertis...

Still smoking too lol😂😂
when a doctor says they are practicing medicine, that is just what they are doing, they were doing it in 1920, and they are doing it in 2024,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
At least in the 20s they wanted to cure/fix your problem. Nowadays, they want to "treat" you, so you keep coming back and paying Big Pharma for those useless meds they're prescribing. Doctors used to care about their patients. Now all they care about, is keeping Big Pharma happy so they keep lining their pockets.
lester's hudson 5210 is now on display at Science City at Union Station in kansas city. for anyone interested in going to see it. it is now dressed up as a fictional union pacific hudson and the bell on the front is missing. but lester's hudson has survived and is on display indoors.
Thank you for clearing up the mystery. I asked everyone I could think of and no one knew what happened to that fantastic train. I'm glad it has a good home. Thank you for watching.
@@georgiatraveler you're welcome
This was like nature documentaries before they were big. Beautiful cinematography and I love the voice over
12-1-2024. What I would like to ask is……after stewing your dried apples, what exactly to you add……in order to either eat stewed apples OR to put them in pies for frying ? Butter ? White sugar or brown sugar ? Cinnamon ? Please guide me. Thank you!
I don’t have her recipe but here’s mine. They are my favorite. This is Southern country food so it’s simple. The important thing is to cook the apples until all of the water evaporates. They should be pasty and much thicker than applesauce. Then you add the rest of the ingredients. This is for 4.5 ounces of dried apples. 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (this is really to taste. You could use a mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg. ) Cook for a couple of minutes to make sure everything is mixed and then you are good to go. I hope this helps
@ YES ! So, butter DOES go in it ! Thank you so very much. I always just put……white sugar and some cinnamon in, but it always tastes bland. I have never added the butter or the brown sugar. I think you have hit it on the head ! I appreciate your advice, Georgia. Carol from metro Atlanta ❤️

Thank you for allowing me to hear my great grandfathers voice again ❤ as I watched this the same style of snowshoes he was making in the video are hanging on the wall behind me heart ❤
You just made my day. Part of the reason I protected this stories for 40 years is I believe the people should be seen and remembered. Your great grandfather and I had a lot of fun doing the story. It means a lot to hear from you and know his family is seeing him again.
This is the first slingshot Hunter/artist that I’ve ever seen that also shoots from the right hand and is also right eye dominant. I’ve been shooting this way since I was eight years old and people are always amazed.
Newspaper comics are boring and haven’t changed in decades. Safe but only funny ha ha lowercase. Not as good as classics like the Far Side.
I agree. As the Funny Pages got smaller they lost their edge. I loved the Far Side and Doonesbury.
Don't forget Bloom County
You guys seem to have had a virtually inexhaustible well of stories. How many per year did you produce? I've watched many of these stories numerous times. Always a pleasure.
Thanks, sir. Well, in the 9+ years we did the Traveler series we filmed close to 1400 stories. Sadly only about 350 survived. Many I did live and they were never videotaped. We lost about half of the videotapes. I literally carried 16 giant boxes of big tapes from place to place for 40 years. The Brown Archives at UGA saved my life.
@georgiatraveler very glad you toted those boxes! 😁
Amazing! I would love to find one of John's creations and have it in my home
You have excellent taste. Check this out. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1313&_nkw=john+byron+glass&_sacat=0
I love glass art! Blown glass, stained glass etc. Andy, were your segments on film or video tape? I guess film holds up very well but tape not so much? Was the sound recorded separately? Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi the stories were shot on film. We would transfer two weeks of stories to videotape at WSB-TV before we left to go back on the road. Compared to what we can do today it was very primitive.
Bro I grew up in duluth GA and never heard about this
This was 1975 before the internet and all the new tech. I received a letter about Jesse from one of his neighbors, that's how I found out. Thanks for watching.
Gets 38 mpg but doesn't 😂
No 3 wheeler truly steers like a 4-wheeler. That's why they banned the off road 3 wheelers. Had them as a kid and flipped them all the time.
Hi, there seems to be some very strong opinions about 3 wheel cars. Remember this story was in 1975. There were no restrictions back then. Thanks for watching.
Well, the wheel configuration with the one in the front would be an issue, yes. However, if the one wheel was in the back, it would handle much better since it's more stable with the two in the front. Look at the can-am spider or the Morgan three-wheeler.
@@travismcgee9333 I can't argue with science. Jesse told me he focused on wind resistance. How is everything on The Busted Flush?
God bless that man, Jessie. I'm guessing he i now long gon to meet his maker. .
That's true. Jesse passed away in 2013.
Mr bean hated that car
But he loved the colors.
What car is it?
He called it the Tryette because someone else already had the name, Tryvette.

Thanks to a concert produced by Anne Romaine I was able to meet Brown in Huntsville, Alabama. Years later I was able to hire him to perform at Brewton-Parker College.
You were a lucky man. Thanks for watching.
I used to think an organ grinder was someone who works on pipe organs. When I heard the term I imagined a guy cutting pipes or grinding them to put them together. 43 years old and tonight I looked the definition up when I heard organ grinder mentioned in a painting,
Can you imagine quitting your job to be a full-time organ grinder?
And they would roll over.
You may be right but he drove it pretty wild.
@@georgiatraveler Not "maybe" but ACTUAL fact. Lots of companies tried three wheelers, they all rolled, and easily.
This interview should be 3 hours long. She fascinating.
Build quality was a huge problem. The car was named after Edsel Ford who was very anti-union-labor at FoMoCo and the assembly line folks weren't anxious to make a car with his name on it as well as possible.
Great story! And Pruitt's headgear in those photos is hilarious. :)
n real life I never saw John wear a hat. I don't know about the bonnet.
At least they're not made by the Chicoms.
Don quijote would be PISSED
He’d defeat them all
Not as pissed as Trump

I hope he doesn't get cancer from the noise of his windmills. The United States of America has a candidate for president who says windmills cause cancer and is a rapist and 34-time felon.
