I actually sold my Sigma 50mm when switching to Sony in favour of the Zeiss 55mm. The Sigma is a great lens but having the smaller form factor of the Zeiss, the Zeiss also appears sharper and despite being 2/3rds of a stop slower in aperture, in real world it's only about 1/3rd less light transmission than the Sigma make it a winner to me
Sigma is sharper than Zeiss if you compare the same apertures. The same about vignetting, Sigma is better. And Sigma also doesn't have any distorsion, but Zeiss have it... so in terms of image quality Sigma is better in any aspect.
Антон Павлов - well maybe an off copy of the Sigma or a very good copy of the Zeiss, but the two lenses I had showed very minimal difference. And the Zeiss is definitely only 1/3rd T-stops slower despite being 2/3rds less aperture
I have never been a fan of big bulky lenses so the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 is the one I'm probably going for. Looking forward to the full comparison. I really like your lens comparison videos it really helps when you have plenty of choice.
I was just wondering this and im glad the results for the mc11 are good. I found a sigma 105 1.4 for 1000 and the mc11 150 instead of the emount 105 for 1600.
Camera guy, yesterday June 17, 2018 I connected my mc11 adapter. They relaesed a new update. Used my sigma 135 art. Performs flawlessly very crisp photos!! Eye focus tracks everything works as it should. If people can find a cheap sigma art lens for canon grab it you won't regret it.
I’m not sure why I’m watching the art 50 e mount review / comparison reviews since I just picked mine up yesterday 😁. Love the art series. Keep up the great work. Really enjoy watching your videos.
I am surprised that native isn’t noticeably better with AF. I had the MC-11 on the 24-105 in indoor low light, and that combination struggled with continuous AF. Can’t remember if it was spot or zone. I didn’t do a side-by-side comparison, but from my use of native glass, I felt that just about any native lens would have had better performing AF in that situation. The Sigma EF primes must be better than their zooms. Now, in well-lit scenes, the MC-11 works very well.
Do you know the quality between the sigma 50mm 1.4 e version for Sony aiii and the one for nikon z6 with the adapter which has more quality? The one for Nikon it’s like $600 used the one for Sony is more expensive
I heard that you can send your Canon Mount lens to the main US office in Ronkankama, NY and they will convert it to a Sony EMount for a fee! Can you confirm that, and if so how much and would you recommend that route?
Great video. I have the EF version because I still have my 5DIV. I have noticed much improvement with the lenses after every firmware update. Spot on with the focussing noise. Images still come out beautiful. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for this. I suppose its very subjective on the adapter you have in play. I'm certain the native would be alot better as my adapter is fairly cheap on the Canon one I've tested. I'm very curious on which is better out of this and the Zeiss 55mm as I'm in the market to purchase one of the two.
I’m going to stick with the 55mm f1.8 which is excellent. If was going to get one of the Sigmas, I get the native one, since I don’t have any Canon bodies.
Great vid Danny! Can't wait to see the rest of the comparisons. I was adapting a 50mm f1.2 with the mc-11 and the eye autofocus(my fav) just wasn't cutting it. Lots of hunting. I was stoked to hear about the new sigma 50 and pulled the trigger at preorder. I LOVE this lens!! So much I'm looking at all of the other new sigmas! Seriously ...you and Mr. Thongs just give me BAD GAS!
Is the face box supposed to show with the mc 11. I'm using it on the A7 iii, the option isn't greyed out but the box around the face doesn't appear at any time.
Excellent work Danny. Pretty much confirms my original concerns that essentially the EF mount version of this lens is little more than a Canon mount with an MC11 moulded into the neck of the mount. The only advantage seems to be the lower focusing noise during video AF. If this is what we can expect from the remaining new e mount Sigmas being released their addition might be less exciting than many hoped.
Got the native one and very happy with it. Zeiss 50 1.4 is just a bit faster on video AF-C. I wish it wasn't that heavy on my A7III. In the future i will consider the 55 1.8 for travel. Gonna keep this one for studio work mostly.
Sorry if I misunderstood your explanation. In the Zeiss 1.4, 55 1.8 and Rokinon video, will you also include the Sigma Art E-Mount? Specifically, will you do a comprehensive Sony 50 vs. Sigma Art 50 segment or a separate video? Please? ☺️😁
I think its firmware issue with the noise as on Canon cam it can focus without noise, but doubt Sigma gonna fix it and push people to buy native version.
that1cameraguy nice video. Thanks! From seeing your video, my guess is that Sigma has used a diffrent AF motor for the Sony mount version. The Canon mount seems to be using a ultra sonic motor and the sony moubt version is probably a stepping motor that most Sony lenses also use (the latter is preferred for video but can be slower than ultra sonic)

I waited to see how those native art lenses would turn out. But with the BMPCC4K coming, i'll probably get the EF line to use with both systems. I already have the 55mm zeiss, the lens is fantastic, but i hate fly-by-wire MF. So... I'll probably get the sigma art EF. Your video really helped me out. Keep with the good content!
I recently grabbed a Sony a7 III and I'm coming from a Canon 6D. I already owned a couple sigma arte lenses in ef mount so I was really interested in this video. After watching this I know the e-mount version is definitely not worth it. The ef versions can be found used pretty cheap compared to the e mount version. So if I ever was to sell them it'd be to go fully native and get a Sony lens. Thanks for the video.
How noticeable is the focus breathing? Does it have it at all? It's an important thing for video rack focusing. That's why the sigma 50-100mm art is "useless", it has crazy focus breathing, changes the frame completely.
I purchased the Canon version prior to switching to Sony. Bought the MC-11 (which was the catalyst to switch to Sony), and used this combo on my A7RII for some great images. The focus consistency was always a weak spot. Later, I purchased the Sony/Zeiss 55 F/1.8, thinking to replace the Sigma and get a better hit rate. I must have got a bad copy because I hate the 55. Never seems sharp, and rendering not close to the Sigma. I recently sold my Canon version Sigma 50 Art and just purchased the e-mount version. Hoping the performance is near native for focusing. If so, it should be the perfect 50 for Sony e-mount.
Charles Balce all I know is you can ask for a quotation. The conversion is only available for lenses that are available in FE Mount. The Sigma 150-600 can't be converted because there isn't an FE version yet.
Hey! So it looked like you were recording with the atmos recorder and had face tracking enabled? I thought that I'd you attached an external monitor you lost all face tracking ability?
I have the ef 50mm f1.4 art lens on my a7iii with the older metabones mkiv. And for photos it works perfectly. Just video AF isn’t great. (Same as on mc11)
biscuitsalive The Metabones V doesn't offer options like Lock-on AF, 15fps. However I am still keeping mine because it works perfectly with a L plate and I shoot photos vertically on tripods often. I guess I need to buy the MC-11 as well.
I ordered the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Canon mount today on a deal. It set me back 800$. But i'm looking forward to use it and find if it is really worth. Btw, im going to use the mc-11 with the SonyA7iii.
Has Sigma (Canon mount) 50mm f / 1.4 with Metabones adapter. I like the quality of the pictures but think the lens is far too heavy to carry around. Consider purchasing Sony Zeiss 55mm f / 1.8. Therefore, look forward to your upcoming video comparing this opicity with each other. Thank you for good and interesting tests! I'm always watching your video channel.
3.24. For a little more light... It's not little, it is actually 2/3 of a stop. It's the difference between shooting at iso 3200 versus iso 5000. And a quite different look too
I would have loved to see the test on the a7III, because it has much better AF system than that of the a6300. Which means the AF might be much faster. Ok well, thanks.
The gap is just there because it’s not a newly developed lens, it’s still measured out for the digital single lens reflection system.... so only lenses developed for DSLM are shorter. Why do people ask if there was a MC-11 in there? It could also be empty space - but space has to be there. It’s a spacer.
Bummer the native version is almost the same size/weight as the original with an adapter. Was hoping it'd be a bit smaller/lighter, especially for balancing on equipment.
Great video! Thanks for the information. How did you record the screen capture on your Sony cameras? It was super helpful to see the data with your real-time tracking test. Cheers!
So are your BH links actually affiliate links? How does that work? I've looked to find any program that they may have and I couldn't find anything. Also, how do you record the back of the camera? Also, thanks for the up front "get the native sony" upfront. Also, your testing of the 50 f/1.4 (esp in video mode) where the AF performance wasn't fantastic was really good to see. I wonder how much of that was due to the extreme backlighting? I've not made it all the way through this video yet, but that test felt a little biased (by the situation, not you). Although the Zeiss 55 should have acted as a reasonable control, I feel like what that really revealed was that native lenses will always do better in incredibly compromising situations for the AF, and it wasn't as useful a test because different lighting conditions may have revealed different AF characteristics. Just my two cents. May not be worth even that.
Wow. A newly development native lens is better than the old one with an adapter. Who would have known? It's not like something drove Sigma to develop a native lens... XD
I "like" how people talking about sigma 50 1.4 art says "well this is a big dlsr lens design, for comparison - look at this mirrorless design compact zeiss 55 1.8..." 🤦 I am like - biatch, did you forget about Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 mirrorless ? how is then your "compact mirrorless lense size and weight" looking? 🤷
In my opinion Art 50 Canon + Metabones mk4 or mk5 is the best. Better than Art 50 Sony E, better than Zeiss Sonnar 55 1.8 and better than Art 50 Canon + MC11. Autofocus is the fastest and the precision is the highest. I have MC11 (v.1.17) and the autofocus works much worse than before the update from v1.12... Test on A7 mk3, A7 mk2, A6500, A6300, A7R mk2
Wes Perry I think you're commenting based on DXOMark, but based on my own test in the past with the EF version on Metabones, the Sigma is still slightly brighter, something like an ISO640 vs. ISO800 at the same shutter speed and both at max. aperture.
I expected the native version to be no different to the adapted version (in terms of AF performance) but i definitely hoped to be proven wrong. I am really disappointed, since that means, if you want to have native AF performance, you still have to go for the much more expensive sony or zeiss lenses. I own both 16-35 and 24-70 GM, which are awesome lenses, but since i owned the 35mm f1.4 Art for my Nikon back in the days, i would have ordered it right away if the AF performance would have been comparable to a native lens. the bokeh on the f1.4 art looks so creamy, better than the zeiss 35mm 1.4 - and it's around half the price. the 24mm 1.4 art also caught my eye recently - now it looks like i have to wait for the GM version, which probably costs me 3 times as much.
Yeah, in my opinion Sigma was lazy. Instead of spending the money to design a native Sony lens they took their existing offering and crafted an adapter on the end.
I have the 35 Art with the mc-ll and it works good, probably the same as your 50. I think if someone really wants to have Canon and Sony and they just shoot stills it's not a bad idea to buy the Canon mount. but I think most people who jumped ship to Sony are just planning on phasing out there Canon gear. as far as the 50 goes. I bought the 55 because I wanted to keep things small, but there are times where f1.4 would be nice. but I do have an old Sigma 50 that I adapt. I am looking forward to your 50 comparison. I'm curious how the main aspects compare like ( Sharpness / Contrast / Bokeh ) and focus speed
The Sony is exactly the same lens with an MC11 in the end of it. Should not be any difference. Sigma scored no points on design on this E Mount version.
I bought these two lens same day I used two lens for two month, this is my conclusion Zeiss 50.4 VS Sigma 50.4 conclusion Zeiss cons : There is vignetting at 1.4 aperture, this vignetting continues to 2.0, Even though you turn on correction function, there is vignetting at 1.4 aperture :Sigma 50.4 has a little good sharpness at 1.4 (But you cannot find any difference easily) I tested more than 10times, Sigma was little better at 1.4 But I think that sharpness will not affect your decision Because this two lens are in the top10 on dxomark sharpness ranking (And sel100f28, sel85f18 beat these two lens about sharpness) Sigma cons : You cannot resell this lens at good price, haha… Because many people use this lens with MC-11, demand is very low I tried to resell at 5-6shop(after I decided to use Zeiss 50.4), but they didn’t want this lens at over half price, because there are little demand on this lens. It’s harder to resell sigma 50.4 than zeiss (I saw someone who sell zeiss at 1300dollar recently after he use it, Zeiss is easy to resell) :It’s heavier than you think Weight difference between sigma and zeiss is only about 100gram, but Sigma’s weight balance on A7 is not good(Zeiss’s weight balance on A7 is much better than Sigma) Sigma was much heavier than I expected :Video AF is worse than Zeiss (espicially at 120Frame) Maybe this will affect your decision if you need to shot video with 50.4 AF It’s obvious new FE sigma’ AF is better than before But if you are videographer, you should choose zeiss Zeiss has much better AF (especially on Eye-af, 120Fps video) (+plus: Two lens have their own contrast feeling, It’s hard to explain… I think that Zeiss capture original color, But I don’t mean that Sigma is not good) Conclusion If you only shot photography, go to sigma If you need to shot video on AF, go to Zeiss If you care about vignetting and sharpness at 1.4~2.0, go to Sigma If you have a mind to resell lens someday, you must… must not buy sigma FE lens. Eventually I couldn’t sell sigma….. So I should use two 50.4 lens till I die
Shame on Sigma, release those same lenses with built in MC-11 and claimed the are native. Now truth proof they aren’t even better than adapted.

I have to say, AF on video feels TERRIBLE. Tamron, TAMRON is doing a better job at it. Guess will have to wait to get some lenses at better price, or just go Sony/Zeiss.
Last time I checked, the Sony a6300 is about only two years old while the a6500 is still kicking other Aps-c cameras around...and the inevitable a6700 is right around the corner.
I Love it when you and Jason Vong are racing to put out content because I get to eat a lot of popcorn lmbo.
haha
I actually sold my Sigma 50mm when switching to Sony in favour of the Zeiss 55mm.

Антон Павлов - I compared my two lenses side by side before the Sigma went and actually found the opposite, the Zeiss appeared a fraction sharper
Others compared it too, and so did dxomark as an example, Zeiss is worse in any aspect except the size and weight.
Антон Павлов - well maybe an off copy of the Sigma or a very good copy of the Zeiss, but the two lenses I had showed very minimal difference.
And the Zeiss is definitely only 1/3rd T-stops slower despite being 2/3rds less aperture
I also find the Sigma sharper. I have both lenses.
What about using the newest metabones?
I have never been a fan of big bulky lenses so the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 is the one I'm probably going for. Looking forward to the full comparison. I really like your lens comparison videos it really helps when you have plenty of choice.
This is a super helpful video! Would love to see one with the 35mm Art lenses!
I was just wondering this and im glad the results for the mc11 are good. I found a sigma 105 1.4 for 1000 and the mc11 150 instead of the emount 105 for 1600.
Can you revisit this now the 50E got a 2.0 update. Just a speed run against the mc11 50ef
Really enjoy watching your videos.
finally, this video is exactly what i need
Only 2 reasons to get this over the Zeiss, sharpness and bokah quality, if it's better then this is usable or not.
Aye calm down with the upload. it's midnight
LOL, get some sleep dude.
Jason Vong 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Danny racing to that 100k!
thank you! should it work for 35mm?
I am surprised that native isn’t noticeably better with AF. I had the MC-11 on the 24-105 in indoor low light, and that combination struggled with continuous AF. Can’t remember if it was spot or zone. I didn’t do a side-by-side comparison, but from my use of native glass, I felt that just about any native lens would have had better performing AF in that situation. The Sigma EF primes must be better than their zooms. Now, in well-lit scenes, the MC-11 works very well.
Nice video!! thank you for all the tests! really helps!
Do you know the quality between the sigma 50mm 1.4 e version for Sony aiii and the one for nikon z6 with the adapter which has more quality? The one for Nikon it’s like $600 used the one for Sony is more expensive
what is your recommended adaptor fo my sony a5100??? tnx for ur video.. it helps me a alot
I heard that you can send your Canon Mount lens to the main US office in Ronkankama, NY and they will convert it to a Sony EMount for a fee! Can you confirm that, and if so how much and would you recommend that route?
what about battery life. which one is more wasteful when using an adapter or native lens?
Great video. I have the EF version because I still have my 5DIV. I have noticed much improvement with the lenses after every firmware update. Spot on with the focussing noise. Images still come out beautiful. Thanks for the video!
Hi that1cameraguy this lens good for video sony a7 iii and noisy focus ? thank

Great informative review. I'm figuring, we've all have had these thoughts about native/mc-11.
Do you expect Sigma to also create native versions of their art zoom lenses? Like the 18-35 or the 50-100 for example
Will you test the new sigma 35 mm 1.4 ?
exactly what i need.. and i ended up with a canon version since i already have an mc11 and got the lens for cheap from ebay..
I think its firmware issue with the noise as on Canon cam it can focus without noise, but doubt Sigma gonna fix it and push people to buy native version.
Yeah, when using it on a Canon 80D, the noise is very minimal.
that1cameraguy nice video. Thanks! From seeing your video, my guess is that Sigma has used a diffrent AF motor for the Sony mount version. Your video really helped me out. Keep with the good content!
I recently grabbed a Sony a7 III and I'm coming from a Canon 6D. I already owned a couple sigma arte lenses in ef mount so I was really interested in this video. So if I ever was to sell them it'd be to go fully native and get a Sony lens. Thanks for the video.
Hmmm... I think I will test the MC-11 with my 85mm art for the EF version instead. Thanks! You've saved me money twice now!
Can you hear the noise with a shotgun mic for the EF?
How noticeable is the focus breathing? Does it have it at all? It's an important thing for video rack focusing. That's why the sigma 50-100mm art is "useless", it has crazy focus breathing, changes the frame completely.
The sound looks pretty clean now
You're doing a great job :) Subbed since I got my A6000! Thank you for sharing all this useful information with us :)
I purchased the Canon version prior to switching to Sony. Bought the MC-11 (which was the catalyst to switch to Sony), and used this combo on my A7RII for some great images. If so, it should be the perfect 50 for Sony e-mount.
So not worth selling my EF mount to get FE since I don't do a lot of video. Thanks for the info.
Even if you would want to use the FE versions you could send them in for a Mount conversion.
If you use an external mic, you won't get lens noise anyways, thanks for the review. Buying all EF lenses lol as I still have a 5dm3
Htbaa I know! You happen to know the price? Which lenses? And the time it takes?? I have the 17-50 2.8, 70-200, and 120-300
Charles Balce all I know is you can ask for a quotation. The conversion is only available for lenses that are available in FE Mount. The Sigma 150-600 can't be converted because there isn't an FE version yet.
Htbaa actually, it’s a 120-300 which I believe is FE!!
Hey! So it looked like you were recording with the atmos recorder and had face tracking enabled? I thought that I'd you attached an external monitor you lost all face tracking ability?
You do, but not in 1080p which is what I used.
Oh my god. Mind Blown. Thank you so much!!
Is the 15fps feature of the MC-11 available in AF-C or just AF-S? Is the 15fps compatible with other lenses, like the 120-300mm f/2.8 that you own?
Af-c, the 15fps was with the 120-300 also
that1cameraguy wow, that is great news
I have the ef 50mm f1.4 art lens on my a7iii with the older metabones mkiv. And for photos it works perfectly.
Just video AF isn’t great. (Same as on mc11)
biscuitsalive The Metabones V doesn't offer options like Lock-on AF, 15fps. However I am still keeping mine because it works perfectly with a L plate and I shoot photos vertically on tripods often. I guess I need to buy the MC-11 as well.
Thnx for this review 😍
Great video ! Thank you for doing this video! Good content
Great analysis, thanks! I suspect that the focus speed is due to the weight of the elements.
How would you compare the Sigma 50 1.4 to Sony 55 1.8?
Is there a reason no one has compared the Sony 50 art e mount to the 55 ziess
I'd stick with the 55mm 1.8 Ziess... But I'd like to see the Sigma 24mm Art vs the Batis 25mm on UA-cam soon.
I ordered the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Canon mount today on a deal. It set me back 800$. But i'm looking forward to use it and find if it is really worth. Btw, im going to use the mc-11 with the SonyA7iii.
Sigma 50mm Art F1.4 vs Sony Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA??
Which one is better? AF, Sharpness, Performance?
definitely the Zeiss 50 1.4
Thanks bro 😎
Good Job
Has Sigma (Canon mount) 50mm f / 1.4 with Metabones adapter. I like the quality of the pictures but think the lens is far too heavy to carry around. Consider purchasing Sony Zeiss 55mm f / 1.8. No weather sealing & going from hot to cold will cause lot of issues
Great video!
Thanks for the information.
How did you record the screen capture on your Sony cameras?
It was super helpful to see the data with your real-time tracking test.
Cheers!
Great comparison, Danny! You aren't, by chance, planning to compare the 35mm 1.4 are you? Thanks, man!
Its on my radar to compare.
You rock!! Can't tell you how much your content helps!
Great! Thanks!

Why the tone is different?
Wow. A newly development native lens is better than the old one with an adapter. Who would have known? It's not like something drove Sigma to develop a native lens... XD
The Sigma 50 is the result of a rush to the market.
That protruding end on the mount is simply ridiculous.
Video AF looked smoother and overall better on EF version. Huh.
“For a little bit more light” Actually you don’t get Any more light with the Art lens than with the Zeiss 55. They’re both a T 1.8.
Wes Perry I think you're commenting based on DXOMark, but based on my own test in the past with the EF version on Metabones, the Sigma is still slightly brighter, something like an ISO640 vs. ISO800 at the same shutter speed and both at max. aperture.
Isn't the sigma 1.4 ? The light he is probably refering to is the ability to open wider.
It may open wider, but it's actual light transmission, the T-stop value, is the same as the Zeiss, T/1.8
Interesting
Ready for native vs 55 1.8
running in flip flops lol
Hehehe i wanted this Video xD
Lenses are not smaller just because they are made for mirrorless.
Hi
The Sony is exactly the same lens with an MC11 in the end of it. Should not be any difference. Sigma scored no points on design on this E Mount version.
This is wrong on so many levels. What is a DSLR lens? The difference is flange distance.
I bought these two lens same day
I used two lens for two month, this is my conclusion
Zeiss 50.4 VS Sigma 50.4 conclusion
Zeiss cons
: There is vignetting at 1.4 aperture, this vignetting continues to 2.0, Even though you turn on correction function, there is vignetting at 1.4 aperture
:Sigma 50.4 has a little good sharpness at 1.4
(But you cannot find any difference easily)
I tested more than 10times, Sigma was little better at 1.4
But I think that sharpness will not affect your decision
Because this two lens are in the top10 on dxomark sharpness ranking (And sel100f28, sel85f18 beat these two lens about sharpness)
Sigma cons
: You cannot resell this lens at good price, haha…
Because many people use this lens with MC-11, demand is very low
I tried to resell at 5-6shop(after I decided to use Zeiss 50.4), but they didn’t want this lens at over half price, because there are little demand on this lens.
It’s harder to resell sigma 50.4 than zeiss (I saw someone who sell zeiss at 1300dollar recently after he use it, Zeiss is easy to resell)
:It’s heavier than you think
Weight difference between sigma and zeiss is only about 100gram, but Sigma’s weight balance on A7 is not good(Zeiss’s weight balance on A7 is much better than Sigma)
Sigma was much heavier than I expected
:Video AF is worse than Zeiss (espicially at 120Frame)
Maybe this will affect your decision if you need to shot video with 50.4 AF
It’s obvious new FE sigma’ AF is better than before
But if you are videographer, you should choose zeiss
Zeiss has much better AF (especially on Eye-af, 120Fps video)
(+plus: Two lens have their own contrast feeling, It’s hard to explain… I think that Zeiss capture original color, But I don’t mean that Sigma is not good)
Conclusion
If you only shot photography, go to sigma
If you need to shot video on AF, go to Zeiss
If you care about vignetting and sharpness at 1.4~2.0, go to Sigma
If you have a mind to resell lens someday, you must… must not buy sigma FE lens.
Too big
APS-C is dead.. I am shocked you shot with A6300!!
Lucky Never lol, if I had two a7iiis I would have used that.
Last time I checked, the Sony a6300 is about only two years old while the a6500 is still kicking other Aps-c cameras around...and the inevitable a6700 is right around the corner.
My a6300 is acting like a full frame with Speed booster tho haha.
sorry but I see some color difference which native is abit warmer hahahaha
i noticed that too, maybe he used different picture profile or white balance was a bit off on one of the two camera
Why are you sorry? What is funny about one being warmer?
The Sony e mount system is seriously flawed. No doubt about it. Much too small for full frame lenses
哈哈哈哈 真的是焊马
买EF口还能转接,悍马就不行了
