    Brings back the wonderful memories of good old days with the old Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art on the Canon 5DIII. Was very temped to buy it for the Sony body just for the old time sake; however, with the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-f/2.8 on a A7R V with a push of a preset button I get to go from 60MP 35mm f/2.0 to a 26MP 52.5mm f/2.0 image. With only one stop difference and the benefit of not swapping lenses, smaller caring bag with no need of carrying another (heavy) lens it is a hard decision to make this time. Thank you for making such wonderful comparison video for us.

    Truly appreciate this comparison! As always, great video that is super helpful! I have been trying to pick a 50mm. Tried the 50mm f1.2 GM and it's glorious but really heavy (for me). So had it down to these two and the Samyang 50mm II. Tried all three and the Sony was worth the extra money for me. It was just a little more refined in every category and shooting wide open, it was clearly the best to my eye. And that was the deciding factor for me. We buy fast f1.4 glass to shoot at F1.4, so I wanted the best lens at f1.4. And the fact that it's noticeably lighter and shorter than the Sigma was the icing on the cake.

    Switched from the Sigma 50 1.4 EF with mc11 adapter to the new Sigma dg dn and love it so far. Don’t need the higher burst mode or Focus Breathing Comp on Sony lenses. Watching the comparison anyways 😂

      That would be a nice upgrade. Much lighter and much better AF.

    Sigma lenses are so good and have been for quite some time especially the ART line. IMO paying such a hefty premium for Sony is not necessary.

      And that's why these types of comparisons are useful. You can determine if the potential advantages of one lens over another is worth the money for you.

      Nothing refreshing from Sigma since 85 DG DN. Their prime, pun intended, is still 40 f/1.4 Art.

    I currently have A74 with 35mmGM. Shopping for the 50mm, my first pick will be the Sony 50mmGM because I want to have a same GM set.
    However, I just found out Sony GM lenses are Made in China vs Sigma... Made in Japan.
    I'm concerned about their long term reliability. Is anyone have a same feeling like I do?

    Is there a world of difference (and $500-$1000) between either of these 50mm f1.4 lenses and the Samyang 45mm f1.8? The price/performance/packability ratio of the Samyang 45mm is exceptional as you have shown, thank you.

    The SONY makes sense for those professionals who are part of Sony PRO Support. The Sigma option doesn't offer something similar, which further helps with keeping the price low.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому

      What advantage do you suggest comes from Sony PRO support? Service? I'm just curious what point you are making.

    • @adamadamis
      @adamadamis Рік тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes, service, at least equivalent to Canon's CPS, if not better. A professional would likely prefer that, than having to rely on Sony's general consumer service, which includes everything Sony make and is therefore not fast.

      Aside speedy repair times, here's some blurb from the UK Sony PRO Support website mentioning the main benefits:
      Free equipment loans during product repairs
      Free collection and delivery of products that are being repaired
      Free sensor cleaning (2 sensors per year. 2 camera bodies, or 2x of the same camera body.)

      If you buy Sigma at an authorized dealer rather than a grey market like Amazon, then you have 7 years of warranty versus 0 if bought at an unautorized place, and 7 years is far better than the pathetic 1 year from Sony, Canon, Nikon or any other big brands. Only Tamron also give you 7 years, and I like the fact they have a repair center in Canada so you don't have to ship the thing back to Asia like with Samyang.

    • @adamadamis
      @adamadamis Рік тому +1

      @@PanzerIV88 SONY gives you 1 + 1 years warranty if you register your lens or camera here in the UK. SiGMA gives you 1 + 2 years warranty. So, it's not the same everywhere. In any case, my comment was not about warranty, it was about PRO support that Canon and SONY offer, but SiGMA doesn't. I just thought of an additional pro for the Sony option that may apply to some.

    What is that THIRD LENS in the picture you showed at the 1:00min mark?
    (The one marked "AF50 / 1.4 FE II"). It is not a Sony-Zeiss 50/1.4 ZA for sure...

      I haven't had a copy of the Zeiss in hand for years. I can see where you are coming from in terms of price, but the Zeiss also isn't the same focal length or maximum aperture.

    I shoot an A7iii (24MP, no focus breathing comp, no high-speed burst rate). I went for the Sigma and put the $450 saved in my A7Rv fund.

    Dustin, my guess is that you sold your 1.4 Sony Zeiss right? I still have it and I really like it although it is a bit heavy. You don't have it in any of your comparisons so I guess you don't believe it has something to offer. Personally, I would go for the smaller 50mm 1.4 lens that balances better with the body.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Hi Michael, I mostly let mine go because I wanted to buy the 50mm F1.2 GM (I'm now getting the F1.4 instead). My only real complaint is that I didn't find autofocus accuracy as good as the modern standard. Optically I continued to really like it.

      If you are talking about sharpness, the F1.4 lens is sharper at F1.4 everywhere save the corners, where they are about equal. The same is true at F2. At F8 they are mostly the same. The F1.2 lens has softer, creamier bokeh due to the larger aperture, though.

    I feel like the Sony GM lens are only worth it if you own a (Sony A1), not so for an A7 like most of us are gonna use. Also that much pricier for just 1 year of warranty instead of Sigma's 7 years, that's another deal breaker. Sure it's lighter, smaller and has slighter better optical quality but that doesn't justify the steep increase in price to me. Not like if that was an F1.2 lens.

    Sony is only if you shoot sports and fashion (and need the higher shooting rate). For ALL the rest, Sigma is giving exactly the same and in some cases better optics at 2/3 of the price. And that means that when you buy two ART lenses (instead of two GM) you have already funded the third.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому

      Hmmm, I'm not sure the rendering of the Sigma is up to the level of the GM, but yes, Sigma's best function is their ability to provide very strong optics at a reasonable price.
