  • Elizabeth Stirling (1819-1895) was a London organist and composer known for her virtuosic pedal playing, and was the first person known to to have publicly performed J.S. Bach's organ works in England. She studied organ, piano, and harmony at the Royal Academy of Music and held posts as organist of All Saints, Poplar, and St. Andrew's, Undershaft.
When she was 44, she married the photographer and musician Frederick Bridge, 22 years her junior (!), who took the only known photo of his wife. Her compositions include preludes and fugues on English psalm tunes, songs, and eight 'Romantic Pieces for Organ', of which this one is my favorite.
