Nevertheless it must be tough. In N.Y. one can readily buy one's hand gun ammo. in Walmart. In Ilkeston one has to be satisfied with being armed with a steel whistle and a copy of Psalm 49. But then Americans stand solid within the strength of their religion. God bless ya all on the other side of the pond. Ya have a nice day nah ya hear!
Modern day Ilkeston is nowadays in part economically suffering due to its past glorious success. How come? In the 1950s and 60s Ilkeston was my home town. Its housing stock had been expanded via the building of Kirk Hallam etc. in order to provide housing for the many thousand Stanton & Stavely Ironworks employees who exercised a wide range of skills. Essentially full employment was then the norm and today's hard hit younger workers could then walk into a new job with little trouble if he / she had a solid education. And indeed they certainly did so due to schools which provided for every type of skill and ability. The ironworks, like most other U.K. major employers, were later transformed from being very profitable enterprises to massive loss makers due to one simple issue. Namely, both red and blue successive governments were driven by essentially one overwhelming desire namely to give precedence to johnny foreigner in every conceivable way. Their major blind spot being to create an economy whereby British residents could avail themselves of cheap imports. By promoting such British industries could not compete - the result being - in simply expressed terms - that we became flooded with cheap imports which later became relatively very expensive to buy as many had lost their jobs so did not have the funds to buy such. Essentially every other country in the world protected its own whilst we did not. Indeed we did the very opposite. Cheap imports are only cheap when purchased from a solid and regular wage. Wages require jobs, and jobs require British industry. In turn British industry requires a fair playing field. Politicians of both colours provide us with all manner of complex econonic and political explanations whilst life is far more simple. Essentially both major parties are fundamentally the same in application and ineptness, but adjust their marketing trimmings (or rather their empty promises in such regard) in order to support a hollow and rotten system. The 'Ilkeston Advertiser'on 30/05/2014 in its article 'Town is 'hot spot' for unemployment' (just seen on the internet) stated: 'Summarising the figures the report (made by Derbys. C.C.) states: “Of the 15 wards with the most severe unemployment problems, five are located in Erewash"' In other words the then 5% unemployment , together with the economically challenged remainder of local society, was insufficient to maintain the former excellent commercial infastructure built up for a more affluent previous generation. The accusation that economic decline is due to say a giant local Tesco store is nonsense. Ilkeston had a Tesco store in the 1960s yet local small shops still managed to do extremely well. Although most people are proud of the things which they have done or do I tend to be the opposite insofar as a large part of my pride comes from the things I have not done eg. not read a newspaper or watched tv for over thirty years and have therefore in the main divorced myself from endless lies and attempted brainwashing. Perhaps being most proud of never having voted. I believe that today may be a general election day although I'm not 100% sure. If so no doubt the majority of you will have voted, innocently believing that you may invoke true economic changes. You did that years ago by saying 'we want out of Europe.' Politicians, with worn out shoes, weren't even able to walk away from a political treaty, or rather want you to believe that it's very complex and endlessly time consuming to do so. Divorce is far more straightforward. Ha ha. Am I an extremeist / recluse? In part yes, but I'm still a parish councillor in Devon working for my local community on a politically free basis (free of pay or bribes) as is normal.
its all well and good,,but this is happening to most towns...its brought about by the shopping public in many ways..who doesn't use the supermarkets,,but infact, THATS THE CAUSE OF THIS,,anyway,,,think on this,,,your video actually serves the purpose to discourage shoppers ,,so,,therefore,,you in your own way, are adding to the problem,,think about that,,,,i suggest you could balance the score by making an upbeat video,,showing the many small businesses in town that are fighting on,,like mine..
Simple reason for this. Pedestrianised streets everywhere, Parking you have to know where it is before you go. Parking you have to pay for. Buses that are unreliable. and a HUGE Tesco with ample free parking at the bottom. Solution, stop charging us to park, better sign-age, reduced pedestrianised areas. won't solve it overnight, but would make it better.
So pleased to see that 99% of these shops are now in use and open. Well done Ilkeston xxxxx
I grew up there too it is a shame , used to be nice from my memory. So glad I moved away. Makes sunny mablethorpe look like paradise
I live in New York and I come to Ilkeston in December every year to do my christmas shopping x
