  • A first look at the new Microsoft service that leverages Windows 365 infrastructure to stream secure, ready-to-code developer workstations on demand.
    Setting up a dev box is extremely arduous for both geographically distributed and co-located development teams. As a developer, you're configuring different environments, weekly, and monthly, for new projects or team members. And it's not unusual for you to have costly over spec'd physical machines under your desk or hosted virtual machines set up for specific projects.
    As a developer, you may need to access and work with sensitive source code or elevated privileges on your local dev environments to install custom tools in SDKs. It can be a difficult task for IT to give developers the flexibility they need while keeping devices secure.
    Head of product for Microsoft's developer division, Amanda Silver, joins Jeremy Chapman to share the benefits of the new Microsoft Dev Box service; a self-service experience for quickly creating dev environments when you need them. And if you manage developer teams, you'll see how to efficiently configure and assign dev boxes that include the right tools for the job.

    I can't seem to be able to limit amount of dev boxes per user. At around 9:25 in the video, it displays a ton of options that are not available. Was this feature removed or is this a feature that is coming?

    Will these Dev Boxes support Docker and Nested Virtualization (giving us WSLv2)?

    • @MSFTMechanics
      @MSFTMechanics  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, WSL support will align to Windows 365 (currently in preview), see docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-365/enterprise/nested-virtualization

    Can I Develop Android or iOS Apps with Visual Studio 2022 with these Dev Boxes? 🤔

      Yes. If you need Windows Subsystem for Android support for emulation, there will be options to have nested virtualization, too.

    What is the main difference between Dev Box and Azure Virtual Desktop?

    • @MSFTMechanics
      @MSFTMechanics  2 роки тому +1

      Dev Boxes are closer aligned to Windows 365. Both services use many of the underpinnings of Azure Virtual Desktop, but Dev Box and Windows 365 have user-dedicated VMs, use Endpoint Manager primarily for management, and abstract a lot of the VDI management tasks for deployment, management and time spent achieving high VM utilization.

      @@MSFTMechanics Our developers use personal AVD VDIs based on images with their core apps. ConfigMgr is currently used for the update and software management. The ability to devolve the administration and provisioning would certainly appeal to Dev team leads. Is there a comparison of the capabilities and changing responsibilities between Dev Boxes and the type of approach we utilise?

    Can we work on these windows instances with the 'vscode remote' plugin, similar to codespaces?

    • @carlosgarcialalicata
      @carlosgarcialalicata 2 роки тому

      the windows instance is a full blown Windows VM. So you can install VSCode, Eclipse, or whatever else you want

    • @StefanHanrath
      @StefanHanrath 2 роки тому

      @@carlosgarcialalicata I specifically mean the ‘native’ codespaces connection to a windows host, as was possible with the vscode branded codespaces beta.
      From what i understand, it will be more of a ‘virtual desktop’ type deal instead of a managed codespaces host & I’ll need to roll vscode remote ssh server setup in my own windows image.
      I only bring this up because the codespaces ‘remote’ client is the only one supported in the web vscode (that runs everywhere).
      So i can’t build anything windows related with a lightweight remote setup unless i roll my own & carry around a client device with a non-mobile OS.

    • @carlosgarcialalicata
      @carlosgarcialalicata 2 роки тому

      @@StefanHanrath I am not sure if I understand. This gives you a VM with a VDI. you can also connect to that VM with other protocols, but you will need to install the server as you mention. if you only need remote VSCode, then you can simply run a container in container apps or so, no?

    • @StefanHanrath
      @StefanHanrath 2 роки тому

      @@carlosgarcialalicata running an app service or ACI for a windows image would work for the server part of vscode accessed with the SSH remote plugin. All other remote scenarios with a windows vscode host are not supported by that project, per decree of the maintainers.
      The ssh remote client extension won’t run in a web client either, only the ‘codespaces’ remote client runs in the web vscode version.
      In any case, dev boxes are still really neat, but probably more useful for a different scenario than i had in mind, so i’m barking up the wrong tree here.
