excellent- succinct and some great ideas. I have just sourced similar and intend to use some of your techniques.
The dowels, base and re-staining with red wine are great. The curved base is elegant and practical.

I'm about (in the next 2 years!) a table centre piece with oak barrel sections that I salvaged from a vineyard in Italy. Amazing wood. I don't want to sand it down on the inside, so what covering can I used to make it more hard wearing and smooth? Maybe multiple lacquer coats?

I used a mixture of road tar and hydraulic fluid. The color, sheen and protective qualities are fabulous. Should last a lifetime.
