I own a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood. My a/c works for about 15 minutes and then the fan stops working even though the compressor is still on. I can slide the switch halfway between the bi-level position and the defrost position to get the fan to start again but, it goes to low speed after a while. It keeps the interior at about 74 degrees which is okay on a really hot day but, I would like to have it working again the way it was intended. Any suggestions? Could it be a blower resistor?
Since the problem is intermittent, I don't think it would be the resistor. If the resistor was bad the problem would not come and go. I think that slider switch is a likely suspect.

Great! Welcome aboard. And if you ever do need to replace these parts, I recommend replacing them BOTH. This fella actually made me a believer: ua-cam.com/video/ebvZ1217M-k/v-deo.html
Question: I have a 2011 SS Camaro. Maybe 35k miles on it. When I turn the heater on the fan will start, seems faster than it should be for the lowest setting then it cuts off. I turn it off, sit a bit try again and it does the same thing and novother speeds will respond when turning the dial up. Do these things have a shit off on them if they pull too many amps? Could it be a relay for low speed thats stuck and only hihgh is working? Or could it be the resisitor and if you could, tell me which to try first. Ive checked the fuses but not the relaya yet. Thanka.
Wow. I understand your frustration. In both of your scenarios (relay and resistor) it DOES seem odd that the problem seems to fix itself, then goes back to being broken again. Your relay theory sounds like the place to start in my humble opinion. I can't claim to be an expert on your Camaro, but as a general rule, I always begin the process by replacing the cheapest thing first then working my way up to the more costly items. Hope this helps.
Clean the switch whith electric spray cleaner I did mine works on all speeds I spray all of the connecters on my truck they get dirdy just like any thing else that spray is good stuff you will thi k it's something big and it just be the switch that goes to it

What about the bearing on the nuther end, don’t it need to be three-in-one’d too?
Hmm. Interesting point.
Great fun! I would add that if you have a clogged pollen/cabin filter it will reduce the air flow through the tunnel and cause the hedge-hog resister pack to overheat and fail.
Great tip! Thanks!
Merv, 2002 GMC savanna van- no air/heat coming out of vents just from defrost windshield and floor slightly - blower motor resistor? If fuse ok?
I have the same issue with my 2005 Honda Civic as well!
Could be what they call "blend door actuators". Not that hard to swap out, but it depends on the make & model of the car because some of them can be hard to reach.
Merv's Service Secrets thanks merv for the time!
It lock up on me no fan turning. Then after a moment the fan turn on. The resistor is fine all speeds I have your video in my descriptions. Big thanks and thumbs up I felt a huge difference spinning it after oiling.
Glad you enjoyed the video. I just try to apply common sense.
I love the way your videos are so relaxing after get worked into a frenzy trying to get the ac/ heater to blow something anything on any speed... but sad to say im still not getting any type of blow flow . Please help. I have a 2014 mustang and last week I tried to defrost windows on my way to work and turned the dial to high ,medium and low and nothing. I’ve just changed the resistor and have checked every single fuse and the wires going to the resistor and now I’m stuck. I’m not to sure what I should do next. Please if you or anyone please could give me a point in the right direction I’d be forever so great full. It’s gonna be getting very cold up here in Ohio with winter fast approaching. Thank you so kindly.. hopefully you can help...
This feller might have the answer. Swapped out the blower fan itself. Sounds like yours might be dead so the resistor won't help it. ua-cam.com/video/ebvZ1217M-k/v-deo.html
I loved this video. Omg. The best EVER! I have a question tho. Why would my blower stop. And then hours later, kick back on? Any ideas where to start?
I'm really not sure, but MAYBE the fan is getting older and binding in some way that puts a drag on the circuit? Maybe time to replace the fan blower itself.
@@MervsServiceSecrets so I was ready to remove the resistor, took apart the shield under the glove compartment and started removing the screws for the resistor, this whole time I had the setting to 5 which is Max and on AC, while fiddling with the wires to try and disconnect them, the AC kicked on strong, so I kept fiddling with the wires and found the second set of wires in the back with the clips that connect to the resistorwhere the cause, so I made sure it was clipped back in, put the shield back up and it stopped working, so I fiddled with the wires and adjusted them to where the AC stays on after putting the shield back on
I had already previously checked every fuse and relay

If it blows cold, but not strong, that would indicate a blower problem. If it blows hard, but not cold, it might just need a recharge. Hope this helps.

The blower motor in my car Sometimes turns on and sometimes not. But if I tap it with something it will kick on. Well this help it or is there something else I can do?
To me that sounds like switch issue
Mr Merv's
I have lexus AC blower how can I run it out side the car
Great video, as well as the resistor. Inspired me to try to change my own, and I did so with success. AC fan control stopped working, so I changed both resistor and motor. Worked great for a week. Then I noticed a slight seeping leak after going through a car wash in the foot well, not like a pouring, but definitely enough to wet the floor mat. Coming from under glove box, but above the foam padding covering the motor/resistor area. Now today, heard a buzz "surging" sound and fan completely out again. Any idea of if a leak could short out wires or something in that area? I'm trying to imagine where the leak could be coming from -- doesn't come in with rain, only a car wash. Thinking maybe the windshield cowl area or undercarriage seal? I'm going to swap out the motor and resistor a second time, and if it happens again, guess it's off to the mechanic. The leak seems to be the culprit though, to my layman's eyes. Thanks for the video again.
Noticing that leak is an important observation. Might help others as well. I would definitely check the cowl area. There are usually openings at the bottom which act as a drain. They get plugged with pollen, debris, little leaves, etc. When it rains perhaps they are providing enough drainage, but with the deluge of a car wash, perhaps they can't keep up. Worth doing a little research as to how to clean those out. Hope this helps. -Merv Himself
Merv's Service Secrets thanks for the suggestion. I’m going to try and take out the cowl and clean it out. Looks like it’s just some clips and bolts. It’s a 2013 so the seals might have just cracked too.
@@ecceben did you ever fix the probem?
Yes. Please update us on your outcome. Might help others to know how you solved it.
It's probably the Sirius satelite radio gasket on the roof. Water is getting in and running down your passenger side A-pillar shorting out the blower motor. Reseal it with some black RTV sealant. You may as well do the third brake light gasket too on the top back of the cab so that your cab corners don't rust out.
You’re the man Merv thank you!!
My pleasure!
Helpful, Educational and entertaining. Thanks bro
How do you know which is the right fuse , what amp would the blower fuse be, I have a scirocco 2010 and they don't give you a fuse diagram , plus it's almost impossible to get the small fuses out.
There should be a fuse diagram on the underside of your fuse box cover. If not, you might be able to find it on the internet
@@MervsServiceSecrets Thanks for replying, No there is no diagram and nothing in the drivers Manuel, they state in the Manuel that they don't print a fuse diagram because they change all the time, and I have looked on the internet ,and UA-cam but they don't give specific Fuse locations , the number the fuses but don't tell you what the numbers are😀, Thanks anyway.

Merv, Thanks, I saved 60$ thanks to this video! Worked like a charm! Plenty of other videos tell you how to replace the motor with a cheap chinese model, but I always prefer refurbishing my own! Loved the PBR references and b*tchy wife too!
Yep, she's a real peach.
I replaced my resistor but it worked for a little on the lower settings and then just went back to working only on high. I looked at the plug that connects to the blower motor resistor and it seems like a part of it is burnt out. Should I splice that then check the blower motor? Or vice versa? Seems to me the resistor just keeps shorting.
I spliced the one in Margie's car, but it was NOT easy because there isn't enough slack to work with. Hers looked kinda melted inside, but in retrospect, I probably could have just cleaned out the existing one with some electronics cleaner. This fella had a good point. Sometimes its best to replace them BOTH. The blower resistor, plus the blower motor assembly. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/ebvZ1217M-k/v-deo.html
Merv's Service Secrets would the electric cleaner clean a burnt connection it looks like where the wire connects to the plug harness is burnt too. I just bought both so hopefully it’ll help.
Look at the holes where the thing plugs into. If it's all gunked up it may not be useable. I have jimmied a little piece of sandpaper in & out to clean up ones that aren't too far gone. But I'm not kidding when I tell you it's a pain to splice in a new one because the wires never seem long enough and it's a tight space to work in under there. Be careful and make sure you disconnect your battery before monkeying around with your electric components. Good luck.
Thank you for the uploads.
Glad you like them!
thank you so much i will try this
Most welcome 😊
Hey Merv so I replaced both my resistor and the blower motor. However my ac still is not working. I know it is not my compressor because when I do attempt to turn on my ac you can hear the compressor click on, but the blower motor does not. It went on for a few weeks, and went on randomly one day. Any advice?
Well, that's quite a mystery. Maybe it could be something as simple as the contacts on the blower switch itself? Maybe needs a new switch. Just guessing tho.
I give this vid a 10 for making it interesting and originality!
Did this fix still work?
It does!
Just gained a subscriber!
much obliged. let me know how it works out for you. the one I fixed is still going strong. If this doesn't work, replace with a well-matched resistor & blower.
I have a question sir. What would be the culprit if my fan does not work on the lowest setting but works on all higher settings?
It's usually the resistor. That was exactly our situation anyway.
So my alternator went out on my impala... i replaced it and now the blower wont come on.... any recommendation. Before only worked on 5 speed only
Fuses? Ground wires? If those are okay, I'd put money on the resistor.

Thanks merv, this is my problem with my car's blower.I'm excited to fix it as soon as possible.
Good luck! As always, follow proper safety precautions.
what about DW-40 ?
I use good old fashioned 3 in 1 oil.
My car is a 2014 Cadillac CTS I can hear the blower change speed and it only blows out a little bit toward the bottom (feet) and the top (dash board) but not in the middle (the face) not sure what it is ........ any ideas ?
My guess is you are having trouble with your blend door actuators. Google their location for your make and model of car. Depending on where they are mounted, it could be an easy replacement ... OR a real pain in the patoot.
Merv's Service Secrets thanks !! Will check ! Because it does provide hot and cold air !
Merv's Service Secrets hello, do you have a video showing how to take off the the glove box compartment! ??
I don't, but if you're just trying to get that glove box door removed, most of them just have to be pushed in at the sides in order to release the catch. A couple screws might also need to be removed depending on the vehicle. As always, do plenty of research before diving in to such a project and follow proper safety steps.
This has gotta be the longest "quick fix", that I've ever tried to see -_actually, I gave up at the five minute mark...
Great video, some people who are bitching must have too much money and not enough brains.
How do I bypass my fan blower resistor?
Well, in theory, when the resistor burns out, that's what is happening. Without the resistor, the circuit just always delivers "maximum juice"! So the fan is always on high. When resistance is introduced, that's what makes the fan blow slower. Kind of an oversimplification, but I hope this helps. -Merv
Just changed the resistor on my 07 ram still not getting the lower speeds to work guess I’ll replace the motor next🤷🏾♂️
Just wondering, did you check the wiring connection the resistor plugs into? Sometimes they get fried and need to be replaced. But it's tricky work trying to splice wires while you're upside down under the dash!
Merv's Service Secrets no I didn’t that sounds alittle more advanced than what I’m use to doing🤦🏾♂️
Best not to attempt it then. It's a real pain, even if you know what you're doing. However, If your resistor clips into a multipin connector, do a visual examination of the connector. Sometimes when the resistor blows, the connecting sockets melt or get debris in them. Spraying with a little electronics cleaner may help.
That's really good advice.
You may hit the rear bearing also
