The Modern Rogue I’m pretty sure that y’all chose the banana for the sake of the euphemism! Or was the ‘snip the tip’ symbolism saved specifically for the carrot?
thanks to you i started throwing cars about 6 years ago! i first saw you on timewarp and it was just amazing! after a few days i could throw cards into apples and melons i love your stuff rick!
*Bows* It is worth repeating.... Rick, Sir, you are a Legend in your own right, and a Legend to one of my Legends and as such, are akin to a god in my eyes! I am a cardist myself and owe it to the both of you for your invaluable tutorials. I have learnt both of your styles of throw and have even created my own style of throw for vertically orientated cards by learning from you in particular. How you describe the kinetic energy manipulation required to get an effect from the card gave me that opportunity. I am in AWE of your skills and can only hope to approach your speed and power in the future. Thank you again and mad respect!
I kinda love watching the guys' minds get blown repeatedly when they're getting shown the technique. Especially Brian just being like "nah, it can't be X" and getting told "uh.... well, actually..."
10 OUT OF 10. My favourite episode! Brian, the Card throwing tutorial you done before was one that I learned from as well as Ricks tutorial as well. Thank you so much for that, you lit the path in an excellent manner, You are an awesome magician and a legend to me. I Love magic, cardistry, locksports etc... What an opportunity to study with Rick! (RICK, SIR, YOU ARE A LEGEND'S LEGEND AND ARE AKIN TO A GOD IN MY EYES!) CARD THROWING IS WICKED! I use it for cardistry as kickers for tricks, I am somewhat between the both of you in accuracy at that range, HOWEVER, YOU CHOPPED THE CELERY so quick!! It took me ages to get the card to chop it and not just stick in! *bows* I can easily imagine this fully reinvogorating that aspect of your skill set.
Their friendship is my ideal relationship. Like one of them is getting hurt and another one just laughs at them like the sadistic bastard they are and it's great
9:47 Aw dang, you got my hopes all up for resetting the "Days Since Last On-Set Injury" counter! 11:38 Oh thank God, you had us worried there for a second!
Wow, is it a bad thing when the fanbase is out for blood like this? I just had a moment of self-awareness and thought maybe it's not such a great thing if we're expecting an injury, if that's the highlight of the video!
Micah Philson I mean we aren't ECW/CZW fans chanting for blood, and they're not intentionally doing it USUALLY, but I do think we'll retire the counter before a hand gets seriously injured again like when Brian was messing with a drone.
Over the past few days I found you guys and I have binged watched every video. I can't wait for the next one. It's kept my spirits up while recover from a major operation. Thanks for all you do, hosts and crew
Jason, I love you and commend you for remaining in the room while the two magician savants totally showed you up the entire time. You'll have your day.
The whole channel is perfect, from mythbuster like legend testing (better than mythbusters sometimes, because my opinion), to tips on liquor, survival, hacks, and much more. This is great.
Omg, I can't stop laughing at how Jason gets his fingers chopped off. This was great, funny but also sick as hell to see a guy slice open food with cards, never knew this was possible. Great stuff!
I am now somewhat disappointing that this episode isn't called "Jason bleeds out! (1 Million views!)" Edit: Also Jason's face at 18:14 is pretty awesome.
Holy shit guys! Cant believe you got this guy on! When i was a kid, i remember seeing this dude on either ripleys believe or nots show or guiness book of world records, and i was studying his technique and cutting bananas, i was also getting into magic at the same time
Rick makes this all look so easy. I've been waiting for a more in-depth card throwing video for a long time, and it was awesome to watch Jason transform so radically! Can't wait to try it for myself
I think you've already got the sense of humor, and I can help you out with the laughing gas flower (I'm an artisan specializing in weaponized suit adornments for villains).
Subscribed to Rick Smith Jr after seeing him on Chris Ramsay's channel and I've got to say this was the most informative tutorial ever! Going to try and weasel out of a family commitment so I can practice tomorrow... Also mad props to Jason, that had to hurt!
Ive been subscribed for a long time now and never left a comment. You dudes are awesome! It's honestly refreshing to see genuine content like this. Your dynamic is very fun and I always enjoy watching your vids. Cheers!
Apparently Hacking the System and Modern Rogue have melded in my brain at this point, because I would have sworn there was an MR episode of card throwing.
I'm sitting in the office at work watching this. I adjust my technique like his, do a couple mock throws to get my aim, and I threw a card across the room, hitting the point I was aiming at and it bounced all the way back and I caught it. Hellz yeah. XD
I like how there are so many posts 8 minutes after posting a video that's almost half an hour long. I'm sure this is another in a long line of masterful video's posted by my favorite youtubers. Thank you guys for all of your work for our entertainment and I'm looking forward to many more. I'll see if this matches up with what I've learned in the past about card throwing. I don't know how you come up with so many ideas but don't stop or slow down PLEASE.
I feel like I've learned wrong. I'm excited to get in some better practice. Thanks for taking those slices Jason. It's nice to see hands getting damaged that aren't Brian's :-).
Oh poor sweet Murphy. From like 7:00 to 7:30 he had that look of when you're talking to a friend and someone comes and highjacks the conversation but he's still all "I like cards too...can I....ok..."
I love how some things come together like peanut butter and chocolate. Never thought to think of throwing cards like throwing baseballs. It's like some things seem to be kind of close in nature but just far apart to be their own things, like peanut butter and jelly, until you try to mix it up one day and it gives you that feeling of "how hasn't this been done before?!?!"
Hey guys I just wanted to say I’ve been watching the modern rogue since it began and scam school for around 5 years. I have watched too many episodes to count and the quality and entertainment value has just gotten better and better. Thanks for all of the time and effort you have put in and continue to put in. The only negative thing i could think of was Brian, I speak for me and I’m sure everyone else when I say, we need that old haircut back!
okay so i did some (very rough and probably inaccurate) calculations, and figured that at 7:19 he throws the card at approximately 37 metres/s (121 feet/s). compared to Brian throwing at approximately 15 metres/s (49 feet/s)(during the competitive section, before being shown better technique) thats over double the speed. damm son, thats some fast cards.
Great video! I really liked the commercial at the end, too! Seriously, you guys should have a marketing company or go into advertising. I want to join Skillshare just to see them knock that tub of excrement to the side! (Also, on a side note, is Jason available for other demonstrations of a semi-dangerous nature? You know, to hold things...)
Mythbusters did an episode checking out the notion of throwing cards as a form of self defense. They concluded it basically doesn't work they even got the guy who literally wrote the book on card throwing for self defence and it was underwhelming.
Kinetic Energy (K) = 0.5 * Mass (M) * Velocity (V)^2 ---> K = (0.5) * [(M)*(V^2)]. Since velocity is squared it increases the kinetic energy of a moving object significantly. One standard playing/poker card has a mass of approximately 1.8 grams. In this video, Rick Smith said he can throw a playing card at 90 miles per hour, which is 40.23 meters per second. If we solve for the kinetic energy using the mass and velocity of the playing card when Rick Smith throws it we get this equation: K = (0.5) * (1.8 g) * (40.23^2). So the playing card has a kinetic energy of 1.457 Joules. ~1.5 Joules is 50% more energy (work) than is required to lift a 100 gram mass vertically to a height of 1 meter. So, if you take an average-sized apple (about 100 grams) and have someone drop it on you from a height of 1.5 meters (~5 feet), than you would experience the approximately equivalent amount of force that a playing card thrown by a professional has when it hits the target. Except the playing card is much thinner than an apple, so its kinetic energy is concentrated in a very small area, much like how a knife has an extremely thin cutting blade, making it quite good at slicing through relatively soft objects, such as human skin, fruit, or foam blocks. So, that's "how the hell can cards do this". :)
I need to learn this technique so I can chop things in half with cards. I wonder if you can embed cards into wood or something with this technique With all the hand injuries in this episode, Jason is probably on par with Brian now if not beating him
You should try plastic laminate sheets broken into shards. I work for a commercial cabinet company, and we break leftover strips into squares. They are rigid, heavy, and very sharp. They stick into drywall.
I still remember when we got the news that Rick Smith Jr would be coming to our middle school back in 2009. I learned how to throw cards, and when he chose someone to throw a card to the back of the gym (winning a car that totally existed) he didn't pick me. Imnotbitter I also remember the original Scam School card throwing video coming out. There aren't very many creators I've been watching that long.

I wanted to see the roofing discs again
This is sweet
The Modern Rogue I’m pretty sure that y’all chose the banana for the sake of the euphemism! Or was the ‘snip the tip’ symbolism saved specifically for the carrot?
The Modern Rogue congrats on getting your water back
Would you tell us (provide links) about the cards and targets y'all used?
So much fun working with you guys! This is awesome!
Awesome to see you working together! This is great!
thanks to you i started throwing cars about 6 years ago! i first saw you on timewarp and it was just amazing!
after a few days i could throw cards into apples and melons
i love your stuff rick!
You are a gentleman and a scholar sir, no wonder the modern rogue is so fond of you!
He was on Dude Perfect-ua-cam.com/video/TvNTcB6c-V8/v-deo.html

Bit weird to watch the person that taught me how to throw cards getting taught how to throw cards. I like this though.

@@airsoft-hh3jv were you trying to say cardception?

I love how Brushwood learns by doing over and over, and Murphy learns by watching for an extended period time, and then does it. Very interesting.
I kinda love watching the guys' minds get blown repeatedly when they're getting shown the technique. Especially Brian just being like "nah, it can't be X" and getting told "uh.... well, actually..."
Man I think brushwood should go to Guinness world records and try to get the most injuries in under a minute
ASP Productions dude that’s an amazing idea!
That's called a plane crash and it isn't very fun lol
I've been waiting for this because every time Brian throws anything, he compares it to throwing cards
dammit, murphy. PUT ON THE GLOVES.
Hahahhaa
HE NEEDS THE DEXTERITY
In this episode, Jason Murphy holds things daintily. Bonus footage ER Doctor "How did you get these lacerations?" "Holding an olive."
I hope my insurance covers it!
friends: who is your favourite ninja?
me: Jason.
friend: is Jason a good ninja?
me: the best there is.
You are correct!
That's because of all the good learning!
andymcl92 Skillshare: good learning
I really don't understand why people don't watch this channel, more.
Modern Rogue is amazing. Y'all deserve a mil views.
Thanks! Tell everyone. Even strangers at the grocery store or mall or wherever you haunt. Tell them all. :)
Anyone else impressed with how quickly Brian learns stuff? Whenever they bring on an instructor, Brian seems to pick up things really fast.
I would've watched a video named "JASON BLEEDS OUT / 1 MILLION VIEWS!!!"
18:49 jason made us look
10 OUT OF 10.
My favourite episode!
Brian, the Card throwing tutorial you done before was one that I learned from as well as Ricks tutorial as well. Thank you so much for that, you lit the path in an excellent manner, You are an awesome magician and a legend to me. I Love magic, cardistry, locksports etc...

I can easily imagine this fully reinvogorating that aspect of your skill set.
Dude, it was like Christmas for me :-)

But can we weaponize this?
Yes. Yes we can.

It's called "throwing knives".
Jason, I love you and commend you for remaining in the room while the two magician savants totally showed you up the entire time. You'll have your day.

I'm a simple man. I see a new upload from The Modern Rogue, I quickly bury the evidence and steal a helicopter to get home to my computer to watch it
Omg, I can't stop laughing at how Jason gets his fingers chopped off. This was great, funny but also sick as hell to see a guy slice open food with cards, never knew this was possible. Great stuff!
the same thing that happened with the banana staying on happens with jason's hand
Hahahaha
he goes to pick something up and his hand slides off his arm.Jason: "Well it was bound to happen sometime"
The Modern Rogue is the only channel where I actually watch the ads - they make them so enjoyable somehow.
We have a lot of fun shooting them.
I am now somewhat disappointing that this episode isn't called "Jason bleeds out! (1 Million views!)"
Edit: Also Jason's face at 18:14 is pretty awesome.

I've watched this video so many times but Jason's throw at 5:00 always cracks me up.
For once Jason is the one whose hands get hurt.
Repeatedly!
Jason Murphy - So what was worse? Getting hit repeatedly by cards, or punching the barrel in one of the stunt driving episodes?
and yet its still mostly Brian's fault.
This is one of those videos where you just know the extras/out takes are going to be amazing.

Oh poor sweet Murphy. From like 7:00 to 7:30 he had that look of when you're talking to a friend and someone comes and highjacks the conversation but he's still all "I like cards too...can I....ok..."

This is cool because the first time that I was turned on to this channel or scam school was because of the scam school card throwing episode
Cool!
Fun fact, your card throwing video on Scam School was the first one I watched on your channel. So seeing this is a bit of a blast from the past
"So I just lack the penetrating power."

This feels like Brian was getting revenge on Jason for every time he laughed when the days-since-last-injury counter had to reset. AND I LOVED IT!
The thumbnail gave me a Breaking Bad vibe.
this guy did a birthday party at my house when I was really young, wish I could have appreciated it back then as much as I do now
I love the modern rogue and I will always recommend it to my friends.
I would love for you guys to make more cooking stuff. Its a skill that the modern rogue needs
okay so i did some (very rough and probably inaccurate) calculations, and figured that at 7:19 he throws the card at approximately 37 metres/s (121 feet/s). compared to Brian throwing at approximately 15 metres/s (49 feet/s)(during the competitive section, before being shown better technique) thats over double the speed. damm son, thats some fast cards.
The card throwing episode is actually how I found Scam School. And here we are 2 years later. Memories
poor poor Jason
So many tiny cuts ...
This was sooooo freaking cool. Always been enthralled with Rick Smith's card throwing. Glad to learn some of the technique.
Nice!
that escalated quickly at the end there with the advert didn't it Jason? **insert Ron Burgundy gif here**
Puffin Entertainment - One Handed Gaming The internet is a rolling bathtub of poop, my friend.
Favorite guest so far. He had the most personality out of anyone I’ve seen. Dope🤘🏻
I love reading these comments. We try to make the ads worth watching!
LOL! I love that they were joking about him splitting a card with another card, Robin Hood style, and he's just like "I did, actually."
Gambit is suddenly way more badass
This method is so much better. With Brians method it was mostly random but with this one, most of them flew.
you should try to do it fruit ninja style. someone throw the celery/banana and than slice it with a card.
Oti no that trend died
The days since injury counter ris my favorite running gag, along with the changeling.
Hey! I was just thinking you guys needed to do a video on this just the other day
Sweet
*grabs popcorn*
I loved this episode! I'm so glad to get another longer episode
I want the picture in the thumbnail to be available as a poster. XD
Nice! I've been waiting so long for a card throwing Modern Rogue episode!
so you mean like Gambit?
I tried to charge them up, but it didn't work.
Jason Murphy Gambit's actually one of my favorite X-Men.
I think you just have to rub a pair of them together really fast...
Same. Still have his first appearance!
Didn't know what muscle to flex?
16:32 rick just casually tosses a card away and it still sticks in something 😂
Another great video guys! Do a collaboration with Michael Reeves!
SirJMDDK yeeeeeeesssssss
SirJMDDK seems good on paper, won't turn out great
"Electrocuting Brian to force him to dab"
I beg to differ!
SirJMDDK Do you want to kill Jason? Because this is how you kill Jason.
You guys are awesome ! Throwing cards is actually really fun to do and to watch so thanks :D
But... can i use this for self defense?!?!
Only if you are fighting an evil vegetable garden
dabas32 only if you set it on fire.
It's certainly more effective than the matches.
Mythbusters did an episode checking out the notion of throwing cards as a form of self defense. They concluded it basically doesn't work they even got the guy who literally wrote the book on card throwing for self defence and it was underwhelming.
ua-cam.com/video/k1ZGIN0UqJE/v-deo.html
Skillshare ad at the end was so funny I actually watched through all of it, fantastic stuff
How the hell can cards do this
Simple physics.
Anodyne Melody I was joking but holy shit that's an explanation
So was I, in my own strange nerdy way. ;)
Science. Science.
I think Gambit (from X-Men) is one of the main reasons card throwing seems so damn cool
I need to learn this technique so I can chop things in half with cards. I wonder if you can embed cards into wood or something with this technique
With all the hand injuries in this episode, Jason is probably on par with Brian now if not beating him

At 18:45 Jason's had transitions perfectly into "👌" 😂😂
I love that when they bleep Jason during the ad, he's just saying "poop" lol
9:17 Jason looks directly at the camera. The look is not of fear, but of anger.
Cooking with Rick and Brian. "Throw 15 cards at a celery over a pot of water and let boil for 15 minutes."
god i love this channel, funny story i went so subscribe and realized i already was, just now realizing how great your channel is.
This worked so well I can now throw so much more accurate and faster then ever before. Thanks so much!
Your guy's videos always put a genuine smile on my face.
I love how 90% of this episode is Jason looking deeply confused and in an existential crisis.
5:51 He threw those cards so hard he needed Tommy John.

I also remember the original Scam School card throwing video coming out. There aren't very many creators I've been watching that long.
Favorite episode in a while, this was awesome and I can't wait to try it.
The funny thing about Brian being a fan of rick smith jr is that rick is younger than Brian by 6 years
Jason's face with the banana was priceless. Took the hita like a champ I might add as well.
