  • I share my thoughts on the Criterion Collection release on 4K UHD of The Trial, the 1962 Orson Welles film starring Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau, and Romy Schneider based on the Franz Kafka novel. Let me know what you think of this movie and this new 4K release if you've seen it. Enjoy!
*Updated (de-noised) version*. Original video contained background noise.

Perkins running in the corrider while being surrounded by those kids is something I often think about.

James, you did a great job describing this film and the CC edition, even tho it seems like it’s not your favorite film of all time. That’s a good talent to have! Would love to see your take on The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

Nice video! The Trial is one of the more "difficult" films from Welles, but I think it grows in power on multiple re-watches. Welles is my favorite all-time director and here is my personal ranking of his films:
    1. The Magnificent Ambersons
    2. Citizen Kane
    3. Touch of Evil
    4. Chimes at Midnight
    5. The Trial
    6. The Lady from Shanghai
    7. F for Fake
    8. Othello
    9. The Stranger
    10. The Immortal Story
To me, even the "least" of Welles' films are still more fascinating than the best work of most other directors. I've seen Macbeth and Mr. Arkadin once years ago, so I don't feel I know them well enough to rank them yet (I need to revisit them).

Never saw The Trial, great to hear your review and opinion; matter of fact the first and only review I've ever seen (or read) about this film, thanks James for your insight and background on its production. Good to know you thought the Orson Welles extras/supplements was impressive; I love that kind of stuff. I'll throw a curve: my current favorite Welles film is one I saw last year on the C. Channel, "F for Fake." It's sorta a documentary with Welles himself telling the story in mystery like ambiance and style. Welles is brilliant here. Format or structure/storyline is definitely unique and basically stands on its own quite well.

Excellent review, sir! I’m a Welles fan and have most of the discs you showed, but I’m feeling a little reluctant about this one. Have you seen The Stranger, which he directed? I recommend that, along with Man in the Shadow; he acted in that, but didn’t direct, and it’s a western!

I have all of Welles Criterion discs as well as the 4K and Blu-ray of Touch of Evil. Also have Lady From Shanghai and a few others. I will definitely get The Trial and check it out. By the way, there is a Kino sale going on now till October 10th -- over 700 titles on sale includes a few $K titles :)

James often has the movie playing in the background as he reviews it but I guess it depends which room he is in.
He seems to have so many different backgrounds to choose from - I am convinced he lives in a mansion with 100 rooms!

The Studio Canal version is excellent, but obviously requires a region free player (I’m in Europe). It’s a tonally chilly film, but I’ve gone back to it a few times. For Welles’ fans it’s a must. Excellent review.

Excellent review of one of my favorite films! Surprised to hear the Studio Canal release is in Dolby Vision but the Criterion is not. Any idea why Criterion made that decision?

Hello, Chris! Glad you enjoyed this review. Great question on the Dolby Vision decision. Not really sure what goes into the decision to apply Dolby Vision HDR or not. Could be an artistic decision or cost consideration, what they think HDR will do for the picture, etc. I need to look into it for a better understanding.

@@20thand21stMovies It would be interesting to know what additional steps are involved in processing content for Dolby Vision HDR. Could it have been skipped (or even irrelevant) because of being a B&W film?

Unconventional narratives? I need to check this out. I'm always looking for more... surreal films, and I'm reaching further and further back (from what Im used to) as I look for more movies to watch.

If unconventional and surreal is what you are looking for, definitely check out The Trial. Given what the film is going for based on the Kafka novel, I think it works. Looks nice on this 4K.

Hello, Rob. From what I understand the film is a pretty accurate adaptation of the novel with some changes by Welles. Welles visionary style as a director was perfect for the Kafkaesque world of this film.
