  • Siskel and Ebert reviews an American animated musical romantic fantasy film Disney's "The Little Mermaid"
November 17, 1989. Starring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, and the others.
It is the 28th Disney animated feature film, it is also based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Anderson, and it is the first movie to be produced during the Disney Renaissance.
Both of them really enjoyed this film for a classic cartoon animation, a great musical songs such as "Under The Sea", "Part of Your World", and more, the very strong story, the characters are truly memorable, and the voice acting by actors and actresses. Roger actually loved it a lot as he put on his list for one of the best Disney movies of 1989. I totally agree with Roger, it is my favorite Disney fairytale film of the 80s from my childhood. Thumbs way up for me on "The Little Mermaid".
    The Little Mermaid (1989) 4/4 👍👍👍👍

And the best part is that over 30 years later Siskel and Ebert's praise still rings true. The film is still masterpiece and cannot be replaced by a low budget overbloated CGI fest or anything else. This movie was our childhood and has been passed down to our children and will be passed down to theirs.

They're saying that "The Little Mermaid" is really just like the early Disney films which was what made it so enjoyable. That's because the early ones were done by Walt Disney. "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Aladdin" were all made possible by the brilliant Howard Ashman who had the same kind of imagination and creative mind as Walt Disney. Howard had been a fan of Disney since he was little. He wanted to return Disney to it's original roots, the way it was when they made films like "Snow White," "Pinocchio," "Cinderella," and "Peter Pan." And looks like he did... for a while anyway.

It's interesting to hear them talk about this - Under the sea did win the best song Oscar - but growing up later we take these things for granted. We had no idea it was the start of a Disney Renaissance and so many films with memorable songs.

3:48-4:00 Me, too, Roger. Ariel is one of my all time favorite characters for how she's not just some dumb damsel in distress waiting to be rescued and letting a man do all of the work for her, making her different from the other Disney princesses. She's adventurously outgoing, just like me, willing to see the good in humans, lovable, brave, and yes her looks and voice brings a smile to my face.

I would say "damsel in distress" only really applies to the three classic Princesses, Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora. The Princesses since Ariel have been far more than damsels in distress waiting to be rescued by a man. That's the laziest anti-Disney strawman.

@@TimeandMonotony Snow White, Aurora, and Cinderella are all positive female characters. All because they get help from others doesn't make them bad characters. Also, because they're marrying men doesn't make them bad either, people should stop with the men hating I mean come on are we really going to hate people marry for love to a guy is really bad.

@@frannyc7248 When did I say any of that? Snow, Cinderella and Aurora don't get enough credit, I agree, but that doesn't mean they're not damsels in distress. I think most people would agree the later DPs are more proactive.

Well Cinderella wanted to be free just like Quasimodo. Of course she negotiated with Lady Tremaine that she can go to the ball if she gets her work done. Of course when her stepsisters ripped Cinderella’s dress and when the Fairy Godmother fixed her dress and provided her ride, Cinderella went to the ball and risked public humiliation. And during the time when the search for the girl who lost the slipper was happening and when imprisoned by Lady Tremaine, Cinderella told the birds to get Bruno as he’s the only one who can stop Lucifer. And due to her intelligence of keeping a glass slipper a secret, she showed the other slipper to the Duke after the other one got broken. This allows Cinderella to escape and marry Prince Kit.
Goes to show that Cinderella is NOT a passive damsel as I explained what she did in the movie that many people misinterpret it nowadays. She was somewhat a step forward as feminism for Disney Princess goes but sadly, the next one was a HUGE step back for feminism, which would be Aurora from Sleeping Beauty as her film focuses on her Fairy Godmothers and to some extent, Maleficent and Prince Phillip.

A spoiled, disobedient girl, nearly loses the entire kingdom to the evil seawitch, and still gets her happy ending. And the "strong, independent" female still needed a Prince to save her.
