      Those stood out to me too. Back then, there was something a little more wholesome about them. Not to mention these days, most commercials are for insurance or pharmaceuticals.

      20:20 I'm assuming this came off of local Boston or Hartford TV...the Bank of New England commercial with the Spenser author + a Celtics legend from the Bird era being a dead giveaway...

    In hindsight Roger really nailed it in regards to Eddie Murphy's career trajectory. By the late 80's Murphy had earned an insane amount of goodwill and creative power. That credibility ensured his survival through a few bad movies but one bad decision after another eventually caught up with him. I think Murphy fell into the trap of believing his own legend. The guy was huge because he was both funny and appealing to audiences. Like the scene in Trading Places when Murphy subtly breaks the fourth wall after Ralph Bellamy's character explains to him that bacon can be found in a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. THAT is the Eddie Murphy who endeared himself to audiences. But after a while, he stopped winking at the audience. What followed were basically ill conceived vanity projects to showcase a type of talent he simply didn't possess. That's not to say funny people can't move into dramatic roles with great success. Adam Sandler gave a wonderful performance in Punch Drunk Love. But he also had Paul Thomas Anderson in the director's chair. Eddie Murphy was ultimately calling the shots by the time Harlem Nights came out. If Murphy had humbled himself and allowed a talented filmmaker like PTA to lead the way, things might have been different.

    Harlem Nights had such potential. There aren't a lot of period movies about the Harlem Renaissance era. And to add in some noir-style elements, with Murphy and Prior's humor, it should have been awesome. But sometimes an idea sounds good on paper but just doesn't execute.

    • @francisko338
      @francisko338 2 роки тому

      Are you kidding? Harlem Nights has always been a bonafied CLASSIC in the black community. It's by no means a perfect movie, but what it lacks in the more "expected" means of storytelling, it more than makes up for with it's no holds bar comedy from it's all-star LEGENDARY cast. You can't even count the quotable lines on one hand & even calling it cult classic would be criminal.
      Gene Siskel mentions the racism, but yeah, what would you expect from a movie inspired by the Harlem Renaissance & loosely based on real events? The world around that era was an unforgiving reality for many; not polished & wrapped up in a PC bow because that was the genuine attitudes of the time--some of which many of the older castmembers actually experienced.
      I respect Gene & Roger's opinions, but I gotta admit, I feel some sort of way about two white guys dictating the attitudes of an entire era; as if suggesting how they should feel.

      I was happy to hear one of Ebert's main criticisms was that people back then just didn't talk like they do in the movie, because that is what occurred to me immediately when I heard the dialogue in the first clip. I haven't seen it myself, but you would think they at least could have made an effort to sound a LITTLE like people from that era.

      That 'renaissance' wasn't perfect though. Adult contemporary versions of movie songs in the charts, and the disappointing box office of Rescuers Down Under led to no more theatrical sequels, but instead direct-to-video sequels.

    I totally agree with them on their assessment of Eddie Murphy's movie. Around this time RAW, Eddie's last stand up movie, came out and it was raunchy too. And don't get me started on the hatred of women dynamic in these bodies of work. Given what we've heard about him over the years, it gives context as to why he writes what he does imo 🤔

      Strongly agree. I'm a child of the '80s and I've never seen The Little Mermaid. If one of my nieces demanded that I sit down with her and watch it or she'd never talk to me again, I'd say nice knowing you. However, Harlem Nights is funny. There's a lot of talent up there on the screen, and I loved seeing Eddie, Richard, Della and Redd bat the comedy ball back and forth.

    • @gspendlove
      @gspendlove 2 роки тому

      @@oldfashionedguy1368 Didn't see NLCV or BTTF II till later, when they were on video. A childhood friend of mine named Jason absolutely loved BTTF back in '85, and saw it so many times he could quote from it. I hadn't seen it yet and he kept telling me, "You gotta see it, you gotta see it." He was so looking forward to seeing Part II and what was happening with Marty's kids, but he died after heart surgery in 1988, when he was 19 years old. And all I could think about while I was watching Part II was how much he would've loved all the twists and turns in that story. So I couldn't properly enjoy it because I wished he could've been watching it with me. I thought the second Vacation movie....well, stunk, basically, so I didn't want to see CV. TBH, I was so indifferent to it I was barely aware of its existence. But when I did catch it years later, I thought it was pretty good (and funny!), a vast improvement over EV.

      $60M was a major dud for Murphy at that point. But beyond that, Roger didn't say the movie wouldn't be successful; he said eventually Murphy's goodwill would no longer be enough to guarantee box office success. It didn't take long for him to be proven correct, from the mid-'90s through the 2000s, almost all of Murphy's hits were animated films or reboots of existing franchises (e.g., The Nutty Professor).
