Haha hope not we love them, we plan to move there in a few months and your videos have helped us a lot in getting to know fuertavaentura! we love your 2 dogs :)
It surprised me just how large some of the differences are too to be honest. That is particularly true of the cost of gas - almost 3 times more expensive in the UK. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I remember driving a small rental car 650km in a week in 2018 with a full tank, went to the petrol station before returning it - it was 32 EUR to fill the tank back up from what I had spent. So cheap.
Thumbs up ere' John, interesting video about cost - keep meaning to do one here as people keep asking!!! I pay no TV licence, channels, very low council tax, fuel is cheaper but I do pay private health care!!! Swings and roundabouts - loving your dogs John, just like my Bonnie - they don't care when your doing a vid!!! Many thanks for sharing the info :)
Thanks Shaun. No TV licence - that is something I could have included. Mind you, they would have a cheek to charge for Spanish TV! Cheers for watching.
I'm glad you found it. There are also videos about food and the health service. Playlist here - ua-cam.com/play/PLVkXzA9rlHfpR6WkJsPmHtk-TM7NU2KLq.html
I imagine these cost comparisons arent the videos you enjoy doing but they are useful. Keep up the variety in your videos not easy to keep coming up with ideas for them I expect but always a pleasure to watch them. Thanks.
Thank you. I don't really like talking to the camera, although it is getting a bit easier with time. Unfortunately I have a face made for radio and a voice made for books. The hardest part is trying to remember what I am going to say and then say it without making a mistake. Thanks for watching and your comment.
Me and my girl love fuerteventura and hope to buy a place there in the future, so I stumbled across your channel when I was searching for fuerteventura/caleta de fuste videos... And even though you say you have a face made for radio, and a voice made for books I must say that I think what you do is what youtube is/was all about.. real people making videos. Keep it up :)
Thank you - I appreciate that. I will be doing a video about Caleta fairly soon. I was waiting for the beach works to be finished, which they now have, so I have no excuse. Thanks for watching.
I’ve only been to Fuertaventura twice and that’s been within the past four years. From the very beginning I was very taken with everything I came across, lovely locations with great friendly people and of course the food and climate. I hope in time to venture back and hopefully seek out the Spanish friends that I made.....a beautiful island. I’ve exhausted your videos maestro and look forward to many more. Regards Colin
If you gave watched them all Colin then I think you need to lie down in a darkened room for a while. It is a pretty unique place (and pretty quiet and empty at the moment. Thanks for watching them all.
JP in Fuerteventura I’m chuckling at your reply maestro, I think your videos are very balanced. On the two occasions that I’ve visited Fuertaventura I stayed in Correljo and found it toooo easy to slip in to it’s way of life; I tan very easily and dark too and I found it very amusing at being taken as a “ local” which I took as a massive compliment. Watching your videos brought back some lovely memories so no darkened room needed. Please don’t leave it too long? Regards Colin.
We are looking to get a house in lanzarote for the winters, so watching this with interest. Secondhand car prices are a big difference, 8k to 10K for a thrashed hire car doesnt appeal to me. Amazing how they can run the place with such low tax when you get refuse collection, streetlights on all night and better roads.
Cars are very expensive but they do hold their value. I think it shows how much money the councils in the UK waste (and they waste enough here but the tax is still low).
From memory, I think it happens in November, although it didn't last year for obvious reasons. It takes place at the Nursery of the Biological Centre in La Oliva (and also in Betancuria I believe).
Hi JP , you can save money in house and car insurances checking prices in comparison websites such as acierto , rastreator,(search it on google), or even check with you personal data every insurance brand. It is a bit intense because sometimes you spend more than an hour looking up for the best price but as it seems to me it is very important to find the cheapest one. Also take in account that car and house insurances must be cancelled before at least one month that you insurance will be renovating . ( sorry for my english if it is not ok ) See you!
Your English is very good. I found rastreator last year and will check out the acierto - thanks. I had a big argument with Liberty as they always sent me my car insurance renewal with the new premium 3 weeks before the end, so too late to cancel. They put my premium up again one year so I cancelled my direct debit and took cheaper insurance elsewhere. They tried to tell me I couldn't cancel as it was less than a month from the end so I told them they were a dishonest company and I would see them in court if they wanted to sue me. They didn't.
@@JPinFuerteventura That is right. They are always boasting about that month you need to warn them and getting money from us. I put alarms on my calendar and in my diary therefore I do not forget about it. I am 23 and the insurance cost me a lot of money Regards!!
Hi John hope you are well, I'm asking those annoying questions again. Do you manage to get English tv quite easy or is it an expensive item, also do you find internet connection expensive. Ps.. could you do a video on the new beach at caleta de fuste some time Thanks John speak soon.. Rob
Hi Rob. Yes, we get UK TV through an IPTV service. All Sky and lots of other channels plus boxed sets and thousands of films for much less than in the UK. The internet service is my second least favourite thing about being here. Expensive, slow and often unreliable. I will be doing a Caleta video in the near future actually. Thanks for watching.
Nice video about retirement in Fuerteventura. However the cost of living here is high, if you are a Registered worker as I have been for 22 years. The average wage is a grand a month and many such as hotel cleaning staff earn less. Therefore prices to retirement rich Britt's appear to be cheap. When compared to the average wage on the Island they are not. I know many young and old local Majoreros who struggle. When your wage is just under a grand and your rent/ mortgage is 350 to 600 depending where you live then add on car insurance taxes water and electricity, home insurance etc etc Petrol to get to work and the cost of food especially meat. Oh and don't forget children your average local is skint. I didn't move here to retire I'm an average worker. It's not a bed of roses.
Thanks. Well I disagree with you but I guess it is just semantics really. The cost of living is low here both for retired expats and locals, although as you correctly say the wages are low too so those working have little if any spare money. If the cost of living was as high as in the UK then those working locally would struggle even more.
Nice one J.P "the facts we all want to Know" did I hear you say in one of your vids" That long term rentals are now hard to find"I am now of the age where buying makes no sense being just me, If that is so after looking myself, Portugal is now my 2nd choice, having being going to Fuerte for many years" getting old" there might not be the right choice, I think you gave a lot of plus points to still live their"enjoy your vids " keep us informed of changes, "good health"
Certainly at the moment long-term lets seem to be in short supply. Propertywise you can definitely get more for your money in many parts of southern Spain and some real bargains in Portugal. I imagine that the long term let market in those parts is cheaper and less competitive as a result too. Thanks for watching Nick.
I am not sure you can say any one car hire firm is the cheapest. Their rates vary so much with season and availability. Renting from the airport always seems the cheapest and saves the cost of transfers too. www.jpinfuerteventura.com/driving/renting-a-car-in-fuerteventura/
I'm selling my home in Ireland and thinking of renting in the Canary Islands for 6 months before buying in Ireland again. I wonder if it's possible for this time? Enjoyed the video, I love the Canary Islands.
Yes it is possible to find 6 month lets. This assumes you have an Irish passport so you can stay for 6 months (If you have a UK passport you can only stay for 90 days).
@@JPinFuerteventura Cheers JP and yes I have an Irish passport or need a new one I mean. I was looking in idealists and there seems to be 1000s of rentals available all over Canary Islands, thanks again 😎

Good vid JP, I have been to Fuerteventura many time Kiteboarding and would love to live there but I am type 1 Diabetic and like Spain health care seams to be very expensive you did not say whether you rent or buy you house,
Unfortunately with private health insurance they won't cover you for any existing conditions. You either need to be receiving a state pension and the get covered under the Spanish NHS or, once you are resident for 12 months you can pay for the Spanish cover quite cheaply. We bought our house. Thanks for watching.
There isn't really anywhere to buy them other than looking on some of the Facebook general buy/sell pages such as Fuerte-bay. I have heard that there aren't many available at the moment as people have been hiring them out rather than selling them as the hire car prices have gone through the roof. I know a few people that have bought through aboutcars.es/ and were happy with the service.
Hi as I said yesterday we are moving to the island in October we were interested in your comment about free plants how does this work hope to see you soon
I am not sure if the other municipalities on the island do it but here in La Oliva we can have up to 10 free plants a year per person from the council nursery. This happens for one week each year.
Your only main opportunities will be in the tourist sector which is notoriously low payers and rarely give anything but short-term contracts. Many that work in the tourist sector have been without work for over a year. Assuming you have a UK passport, in order to work here (legally) you will need to have a work visa too now that the UK is no longer in the EU.
I think regarding council tax I said "Our UK house would now be £1902.82/2100€ per year yet our house here costs £295/325€." An apartment would be less. I think we only paid around 150€ a year for our apartment in El Cotillo.
Do i need to speak Spanish to live there? Will I need a visa and how to go about doing this please. Which is best area to live where English people are? Thankyou.
Well you don't have to but it obviously helps. It depends on where you live really. If you live somewhere rural you will need it more than if you live somewhere like Caleta. Caleta is the biggest British area. Until the end of the month you don't need a visa but from then on you will have to follow the rules for the Schengen countries.
Hi J.P. My husband has a possible job opportunity in La Lajita, we're trying to do our homework before making a decision and your videos have been very helpful. We are however having trouble finding information online for English schools in that area. Do you know of any? Thank you
There are no English schools on the island Antoinette. How old are your children? Particularly if they are young, they will pick up Spanish really quickly.
Well we do but not directly. We have a good 5-part under sink filter system which we use for drinking water. It saves carrying 4-5 8 litre bottles of water back from the supermarket every week as well as saving around 200€ a year (and saves all that plastic too).
OK cool, so there is a solution... no pun intended! I was working out cost of living the other day and would rather not add bottled water! However €200 a year isn't a disaster. Cheers John.
Oddly, they are not as common as you may think. You see quite a few houses with hot water solar systems but not that many that generate electricity, unless they are in an area where they have no mains. I believe they intend to start some solar electricity generation "fields" soon.
Not very much I suspect. I think most who live here know that Spain needs the Brits. If we all had to leave the housing market would collapse and their economy would be seriously hit.
